Sunglasses for when you have to run in the house for a bit is a great idea. Don't know why I didn't think of that. I'll be using that tip. Thank you!!! And my neighbors know when I'm observing because I put a large square piece of plywood on my side fence to block the one neighbors local light pollution.
The doormat is a great idea. I also thought you look awesome in those glasses
Pratical no-nonsene tips! As far as I discovered the only astronomy channel that is really really helpful for starters. Why? because most of the tips and info on this channel can prevent people leaving the hobby. And that is exactly what is hard for amature astronomers/sky watchers: stay in the hobby! If you want some more detailed and advanced info about optical instruments/prices itself I strongly recommend the channel of Ed Ting, he is a specialist on optical instruments itself and give you very useful tips/info as well. And of course Astrobiscuit is another funny great channel if you want to learn about astro photography on a real funny way! So Small Optics, Ed Ting and Astrobiscuit is my way to go! Lot of other great channels, but in my opinion many of them are for the more advanced users that are already practicing the hobby for some time.
i really like your videos , i found that the coldest winter nights with clear skys are the best for observation but below -25°C the fun is gone , got to hold your breath while looking in the eye piece lol

Hi Jason, great video, Thanks mate. One of my absolute favorites which is so effective is an old snorkel parker, I use it to block out all the light pollution and it keeps me warm, its a win win!

I just purchased an HSL Reflector Telescope 76mm, I have the itch to use it, but it's a bit nippy here! Windchill in the teens! Anyways, I've been watching your videos and they are very informative for a 65 year old NEWBIE! I'll be watching your videos to get use to my Telescope. Excellent work! Thank you

Cold feet drove me straight to the doormat idea one cold night. I understand the night vision need but honestly going from dark to light really isn’t much of an issue for me as my eyes adjust very quickly, it the bright lights neighbors have on occasionally and the street lights that are a problem. I’m running in and out the house all the time going back and forth between light and dark.

What a great tips! I need to get used to the little doormat you mentioned as the winter is coming (it probably could be substituted by one of these small carpets under a drivers seat in a car if it doesn't get slippy). That straw-finder is ingenious!

Some great tips here, I actually have a good finderscope but I find I still have to line my eyes up along it in order to even get that in the right place! I’m gonna put some sites along the top or maybe a luminous straw....Never Thought about the blankets, what a great idea, since I also have local light pollution. Thanks for posting.

Regarding household tricks I use a toiletroll covered with aluminium foil as a dewshield for my Telrad and two plastick bags filled with playground sand to balance my 8 inch Dobson :)

@@smalloptics753 Hey Jason, speaking of all these wonderful tips and topics you keep bringing us out here in youtube land, I just had a thought and it made me think of you. My ride broke down so I had to uber to work last night and when I told the driver I was installing new fiber (optics) at a Sams Club, he thought I said Fiverr. Then he explained to me what fiverr is and I've spent the last hour enthralled with all the different stuff people are on there teaching. Have you considered doing something like that for anybody who would like a human being explain to them all the finer points of visual astronomy? I think you would make an excellent teacher.

Hey Jason I never thought of these house hold things that can be used for astronomy! Brush and mat duren winter would be great! I gotta to try that out. Never thought a simple straw could be used in that way and sounds amazing.
How about socks too? When in winter the pavements and roads are slippery when it's so cold and put boots or shoes on then the socks as the socks stops it being too slippery when your carrying astronomy gear to local park or out side town to get away from light pollution. I've slipped before while carrying dslr and tripod to local area.

Hey Bushcraft, I have heard of socks over boots before but totally forgot about it. It's a great idea for our hobby because it can get slippery out there... Yes, looking forward to Orion gracing our skies again, I always know summer is gone and winter is well on its way when I can also see Pleiades creeping up low in the East which also means longer darker skies.... I must admit I find this channel really helpful but there is one question that I'd like to know, in one of your previous video's you mentioned upgrading eyepieces but I would like to know would a red spot finder scope be better than the standard sporting scope that comes with the telescope?

Very useful tips and tricks, I have loads of sunglasses, that many I store them along many curtain pole. But currently all these tips are useless to me, as I can't see anything though my scope. If the thick mirror is damaged where the bracket holds it (wish I could attach a photo) but the mirror itself is not damaged would that cause it to be black? I can see a shadow if I move my hand in front of it but that is all. Keep up the good work thanks Deby x 💜 🐾 🐞🦔🐿🌠💜

I do get a lot of questions like yours and like you say without actually seeing the problem it's hard to diagnose. It could be something as simple as bad mirror alignment but without seeing it its hard to say.. Thanks. But i have a question on a different matter if it is ok. The telescope beside you, what mounting does you red dot finder has? Because i ordered an RDF but it came with a dovestail mount, which I just knew after receiving it & try researching for these kind of things. My telescope is same as the one beside you but with two bolts to mount and screw the finderscope or rdf. My question is what do you call this kind of mount? The one that two holes in it. Thanks again.
Hello Edward, I don't know the "official" name of the bracket but I refer to it as a dovetail as you have already stated but it can also be called a shoe. Hope this helps 😀
Cheap telescope finders are useless and it's better to take it out and just use the finder ring mount as a place to centre what you are looking for.
Bedsheets are definitely better than shooting out a street light with an air rifle or slingshot (12 year old me took his astronomy very seriously) 😂😂
Good tips especially the broom. Would a red spot light be beneficial. I'm fortunate enough to only have 1 street light near. And can get near total darkness in the back garden.?
Hello Alan. A red light is always handy in total darkness just make sure it's not to bright otherwise it will defeat the object just a dim gentle glow is all you need. Clear skies friend.
