  • Chiseling metal for an entire day is just one of the eight steps needed to make a piece of Bidri art. This craft has been carried on for centuries in one area of India, but with rising costs of raw material and a huge drop in sales during the pandemic, its future is murky.

      The retailer purchases the raw materials, equipment, and is left with the overhead. The artisans always get paid but the business owner might not if nobody is buying. It's the owner who will lose everything if the business fails.

Try buying from local people,artists or small scale businesses. They might be a bit expensive than your industrial produce, but it saves these old traditions.

      I mean, couldnt they make it using industrial process more efficiently and market it to a wider audience? They could analyze the chemicals in the soil and create an artificial chemical. They could use alternatives for zinc with some alloys that are easier to work with but produces the same effect. Also, using more efficient techniques for putting the silver, drawing more elaborate designs using computers and printing it like what we do with paper, more efficient metallurgical process and computer generated molding etc would make it at least half as cheap as it is today and will also increase customers...

    • @DamienDarkside
      @DamienDarkside Рік тому

      @@CoolMan-ig1ol The problem with trying to make artificial methods is that you can't add time, nor minute elements that are essential to the process. The dirt itself might be releasing certain chemicals at certain rates that affect the staining the the metal, and that's something you also have to account for. There is a maturity and complex nature about soil/dirt, let alone comparing other natural objects vs synthetic/simulated ones. There are other videos on this channel that you watch, and over time you start to understand the base concepts of why certain processes, procedures, ingredients, and sourcing are so damn important.
      Take the curling rock episode. You can only get the granite from one island in one area. You can't simulate it. Other times it's plants and animals that need extremely specific environments to thrive or to develop. Some things you just can't break down into elemental forms.

    "that like processed lime has a magnetic effecton the soil" ummm no. Most of the stuff thrown around about the properties of Bidar soil are purely myths with no scientific basis. The soils is primarily just calcium hydroxide and clay they then mix it with ammonium chloride (not aluminium trichloride as stated in the video). Really the effect is just the reaction from the limestone and ammonium chloride when its heated to 200c.

The real solution would be turning this informal industry into a formal one, which is hard but only real solution.
