  • Dhokra art is one of the world’s oldest art forms. The metal-casting craft has been practiced by tribal families throughout India for 4,500 years. But following an economic reform in 2016 and the rising cost of raw materials, the future of this craft may be in jeopardy.

i am a british sculptor and i was very lucky to stay in kondagaon and study dohkra for some months in the1990's with jaidev , rajendras uncle. i have several of his beautiful sculptures, i will never forget drinking moa with him and the wonderful hospitality of the tribal people that live in this part of india, i sincerely hope that the government of india protects the forests and traditions of bastar for future generations

      Hi,
Kindly visit the artists once more to support their livelihood.
Moreover, I would be gratified much if you consider sending the address of their workshop.

It breaks my heart that india is the biggest consumer of youtube but they're not interested in their culture anymore.

For the past 2 generations, the world and our own country taught us that we should shed our culture and become 'modern'. They even pumped a lot of money to 'reform' us out of our family trades into getting 'higher' education so that we are 'not exploited'. Never take advice from immature people, no matter how rich and powerful they are at the moment.

Thoroughly enjoyed learning about Dokra art.Being a connoisseur of traditional art and a small time collector,
small time collector , it pains me to know that these skilled artisans are not recognised adequately and find it difficult to make ends meet. I would like to see more of such traditional artisans and their unique art forms. Can you please post any videos on PataChtra, a traditional art form of Orissa, which is etching various forms on Palm leaf.

Use this chap's time and effort, show their day to day struggle, but won't have the decency to give the audience his contact or website. Not cool 😢

What a marvelous art form....something that was way ahead of its generation and today it might be old but more precious than gold.....
Ours may be the only country which doesn't recognise/values its own traditional art forms...

I have always been fascinated by India. The history, the people, the land, animals, flora. And the music and art. The fabrics, the customs and festivals, everything. Please don’t be eaten up by China or any other country or culture. Time changes everything, but it is good to remember the past, let go of the bad, and preserve the good and unique❤️

What I don't understand is that it's the wax that forms the main shape and forms but he eventually burns them all out again. And put in the liquified metals into it...but it still forms the images...I'm lost😮

The wax design imprints on the inside of the second layer of clay. The outside clay holds the impression that the wax left behind and gets baked hard. Molten metal then takes that shape.

Very cunningly the foreign channels target people to point flak at the current Indian Government because they are not a puppet of the western interests. The current Indian government is working hard for the development of indigenous art forms

Demonetization did not kill this craft. We Indians who love our country need to buy these arts. The worst we could do is ignore our traditional arts to the political left to take over and exploit against us.

To get the real thing, something unique, made by a craftsman, you would have to get it directly from them.
