I got my first pair of shoes 3 months ago, and wow, they are hard to take off. Such a beautiful art. Dance is now my life and I couldn't be happier! :)
how long have you been doing pointe work because that used to happen to me when i first began with pointe work but after about 8 months or so, my toes stopped doing that and they were completely fine - still does it sometimes when i get a new pair but that's not very often
InMyDreams that's true it only happened in my first year. When you get more used en pointe it starts hurting, the more time you spend on them the more you suffer. But when, after holidays for example I go back to pointe class for like one hour I don't feel much. Weird right ?
Yeah - if i don't prepare a new pair of shoes the way i usually do then it kind of feels strange too but sometimes when I switch makers like after my second year, i started using Grishko fouette pro's (I love Grishko shoes and I prefer a medium vamp plus these r just the best shoes i've ever had) then it just feels like normal which is odd
+Tammie Puopolo Yeah. I saw one of my ballet teachers once wear a pair of pointe shoes, but also took 2 out of her bag then went to class. I Was really confused but I guess since pointe shoes are kinda made in a paper ma shay way she had a backup
This is such a human ting and I love it. People were determined to dance in the least natural position I can think of because it's so beautiful, and instead of them dancing some other way because it's painful, they just make better shoes!
So one of my friends has danced ballet in a preprofessional company for years, and she invited me to “bring a friend to dance week”. I went to a 2 hour pointe class and I wore flat shoes, and STILL I was so incredibly sore the next day. Lemme tell ya pointe is no joke.
I’ve been en pointe for 5 years, I got mine when I was 9. For my dance studio, the dancers who wear pointe shoes get to choose whatever brand. We don’t get them custom though. We go to the local dancewear store and buy them. I personally like the Grishko Elite shoes. I’ve tried Gaynor Minden, but they were too arched and had too much padding. I’ve also tried Russian Pointe shoes. They were almost like Grishko, but they were really hard to break in. I used those only once. It is so cool how all the dancers get custom pointe shoes though!
9? Usually, it is highly suggested to not get pointe shoes at such a young age as your foot is not as strong, it has not fully developed and can harm an underdeveloped foot.
@@elizabethmckittrick789 well they train 8 hours a day surely they are allowed to do something to adjust the shoes to make them more comfortable after a while. i am pretty sure she knows to tuck them in during performances. she is a pro. not you
HOW I ASK, HOW, can there POSSIBLY be 51 thumbs-down on this video?! Saturday afternoon 30 Sep 2017 in California, I am Thumbs-Up #4K-plus. Learning about Bruce Lee & Jeet Kune Do decades ago steered me in the direction of ballet because HE liked it. Now I am a sincere admirer of the dancers. Their dedication, their LIVING to perfect & perform, their care of nutrition. Oh how awesome!
When you get your first pair you will most likely think it’s gonna hurt like never before... but it won’t 😂 it’s only once you start dancing in them for 6+ hours 😂
You can always go back and try again. I went back at 30 and got my first pointe shoes at 33. I had done ballet as a kid, but back in the day if you weren't stick thin the teacher would just tell your parents that you were too big for point shoes and the next thing You knew you were thrown into tap dancing. Yuck. So you can always go back.!
Yeah my flat shoes last like 2 years 😂 and with flats you don’t have to sew them! They’re easier to find a fit in the store! They’re a lot less painful! They’re easier to dance in and require a lot less calf strength! Honestly why do we even dance on pointe? 🤦♀️😂😭
I love ballet but I'm super bad at it. I really want to go on point and become a pro but I just joined and I'm 11. I wish my mom had enough money to let me dance when I was younger and so I could be better at a younger age. Ugh these ballet dancers are gourgeous and so graceful!!
you don't have to have been dancing since you were 6 to be a professional! If you want to be a professional ballet dancer, practice. Practice until you're sweating buckets and covered in blisters and/or brusies. Go to every single dance lesson you can go to, and practice in almost every opportunity you have outside of class. Go to the gym and work out, work on your flexibility when you can, and tell your teacher what you're doing and ask them how to do it so you can prevent injuries. You're 11- that's a perfect age. dance until you drop. Going en pointe has an age restriction of 13- its not to do with talent or skill or strength or flexibility, but the development of the bones in your feet- by all means, join a pre pointe class if you can. This'll give you the technique and skill you need for going en pointe, without being en pointe. If you go en pointe before 13, the tiny bones in your feet are likely to break without extreme supervision. But I promise you, Its SO worth the wait. 2 years seems like a long time, but it'll fly by. Don't give up lil ballerina.
Misty Copeland didn't start ballet dancing until she was 13 years old exactly and look at her now. If you really want to dance just keep practicing and working hard like Libby suggested. Good luck!
My ballet day's were few and far between but from what I did learn, ballet is true, upper and, lower body strength. When the arms are stretched over the shoulder/head-not graceful and my dance teacher and I agree! I actually cringe when I and her see this motion...
Back in the 1970s they actually did put tap metal onto point shoes. It was a very weird thing I do remember watching people essentially tap dance on their toes ..
I think in any company they can have whichever brand they want and whichever brand suits their feet the best. I just think the vast majority of professional dancers around the world use Freeds.
NYCB only buys Freeds/gives students or company members Freeds. If a dancer has a contract w/ another company that makes pointe shoes (Patricia Barker of PNB for example), they could probably get royalties for that brand, but other than that - dancers would have to buy their own shoes It's pretty expensive to buy them yourself, so a lot of dancers stick with whatever their company gives them as a way to be efficient and save money :) Plus, it's cheaper buying in bulk than from retail
I danced a long time ago till I broke my ankle. And not long ago I put on a pair of toe shoes. I could still do it with vary little discomfort. I want to get back into it but at this time can not afford it. So going to save money to get a new pair to start practicing on it again.
I don’t get why the male ballet dancers don’t wear pointe ballet shoes as the female ballet dancers do. Do they weigh too much for the pointe shoes to support them?
You can see some videos on UA-cam of men wearing point shoes. It's just basically not the tradition, but also men have really muscular legs and on pointe the goal is to look almost ethereal. Some people think it's cool, my personal opinion is it just doesn't look right because there's no lightness. But you can check out a video and see what you think .
I haven't had pointe shoes yet but I hope that the ballet school I am in, gives us pointe shoes without making us pay for it 😑 or that it wouldn't be so expensive.. btw I don't even know if we have pointe shoes in our ballet school.. since I never saw someone wearing pointe shoes.
I notice a lot that professionals don't put their heel down when they plie, and releve or jump. So why are we told before we're professional to put our heels down when the professionals don't?
It's important to put your heels down especially when coming down from a jump because it protects your legs from feeling the shock. So if you've ever jumped and came down with your legs straight that you will feel the shock go through your legs. And why professionals don't put their heels down I don't know. Some variations might be too fast to have time to put your heel down but idk...
The longer I've danced, the more my tendonitis has progressed in my Achilles. I have an incredibly low plié, and have the same struggle lowering my heels in jumps. It takes a lot of upkeep, put your heels down so you don't end up in my (pointe) shoes. Haha
Balanchine technique emphasizes landing softly without completely placing heels on the floor. It's to enable faster movement and readiness to "spring". I had to look this up to verify; I'm not an expert. I knew a bit of it from watching Kathryn Morgan.
they normally use dental floss to sew their shoes. Regular thread can cause problems, and just too thick. Where dental floss is actually thinner and strong.
never danced, never wanted do, still can't stop watching about it.
I dance. Ballet is hard on Pointe.
@@laylafahmi17 yup ballet is HARD on pointe
you should give it a try. It's fun

Thank you for making this video. As a non dancer but lover of ballet I found it very interesting to learn the importance of the shoes!
Glad you enjoyed the episodes! The intricacies of the shoes is really interesting

This is definitely helpful to know for anyone interested in this art. Besides the strenuous physical work it demands ballet gets very expensive !
the pain is worth it. the blisters, the hurting. it’s worth it.

I went on pointe at age 13, in 1974, in a pair of Leo's Suede Tipped Toe Shoes. For recitals back then, we switched used Capezio Satin Toe Shoes.

How old first you can get the shoes?
If you join the company do you still have to buy the pointe shoes or are they provided to you for free?
They're usually part of your contract.
Yeah the company provides the shoes to the dancers. That's some of the reason why dancers salaries are so low.

They're actually not that bad.

On a scale of 1-10 how painful is pointe
addie 141 the first year, 8. Then, like 2-6 depending on how long the class is.
addie 141 When you start, like 8-9. Then just 3-4, depends on you and How long Is The class.
I would say a 4 if the class is 1 hr, but it goes to about 8 when you take off the pointe shoes.
