Then in the end the German team scored the second goal from counter attack in the last minutes of the game. It was really pitty for the French team, as they really had the toughes opponents on their road to the semi-final (Italy, Brazil). But the German team was very robust, and although they had a hard time, struggling against Uruguay and Scotland and losing against Denmark in the group, then squeezed trough against Morocco and Mexico, they really shined in the semi-final and the final.
Remember this game as if it was yesterday - France never broke sweat. Couldn't believe how comfortable it was. End of an era but really it should have ended in Madrid after the '82 final.

France 82 -86 had flair, liked to play between the lines and were very quick on the counter-attack. But Brazil 82 team were still more beautiful on the eye
One problem with Italy is that they can be too systemic, which works against Germany (defend then counter attack) very well but not always against teams crafted with artistry (Brazil, France, Argentina, and occasionally Spain) and individual brilliance (Brazil, Argentina, France, Netherlands). France would've played much better against Germany and take it to OT hadn't it been so rough against Brazil. Then again, Germany is a systemically offensive team so they can dismantle teams like France by shutting down their best artists like Platini, Amoros and Tigana halfway without the need to counter attack.
Italy doesn't necessarily have to have high-level players to be competitive but if it has talented players generation, it is almost unbeatable in the in-and-out matches (from 90 - 98 they have lost in World Cups only by Penalties not on the field). France, if it doesn't have high level players, has difficulty in being competitive and this is demonstrated by the history and the fact that they had to "reinforce" with migrant players, but if we want to say it all, the same Platiní, Ferreri of the 80's were players of Italian origin.

in 1982 World Cup, France had at least 3 black players: Janovian, the right back, Marios Tresor, the central defender who scored against W. Germany in 1982, and Tigana. Even in 1978, I am not sure about Janovian but Tresor played as well as he gave a penalty to Argentina in a game that France lost 1-2 against Arg. I might misspell the names a little bit as I just use my memory. The way things are going, in the next W. Cup. we might not see a single white player in France team!!
As a fan of Zoff, I don't think it was a matter of goalkeeper. The whole Italian team performed badly, especially the forwards that walked randomly on the pitch.

But France won without any trouble. We did nothing in this game - just the one shot in the first half which Di Napoli couldn't turn home. France 82 -86 had flair, liked to play between the lines and were very quick on the counter-attack. But Brazil 82 team were still more beautiful on the eye
One problem with Italy is that they can be too systemic, which works against Germany (defend then counter attack) very well but not always against teams crafted with artistry (Brazil, France, Argentina, and occasionally Spain) and individual brilliance (Brazil, Argentina, France, Netherlands).
France would've played much better against Germany and take it to OT hadn't it been so rough against Brazil. Then again, Germany is a systemically offensive team so they can dismantle teams like France by shutting down their best artists like Platini, Amoros and Tigana halfway without the need to counter attack.
France hardly ever win against Germany...but often win against Brazil.
Italy doesn't necessarily have to have high-level players to be competitive but if it has talented players generation, it is almost unbeatable in the in-and-out matches (from 90 - 98 they have lost in World Cups only by Penalties not on the field). France, if it doesn't have high level players, has difficulty in being competitive and this is demonstrated by the history and the fact that they had to "reinforce" with migrant players, but if we want to say it all, the same Platiní, Ferreri of the 80's were players of Italian origin.

But France won without any trouble. We did nothing in this game - just the one shot in the first half which Di Napoli couldn't turn home.
