How to decorate your house: Matilda Goad's insider guide choosing furniture | House & Garden

- Matilda Goad has a talent for shaking a cocktail of ideas together and coming out with something fun and unexpected. Her style could probably be best characterised as ‘neo-country’. Rooted in her upbringing in rural England, it is in parts unapologetically old fashioned - think chintz, scallops and frills - while also calling upon a wide frame of contemporary references, from Americana to Japanese restaurant design. In the final episode of our renovating video series 'Evolution of a Home' Matilda shares her design process and how she sources furniture and antiques. This episode is a must-watch for anyone who is starting out on a decoration project, with useful ideas for discovering your personal taste, developing your eye, choosing colour and fabric and sourcing antiques and furniture.
'The Evolution of a Home with Matilda Goad' is a brand new renovation video series from House & Garden packed with ideas to copy. In 2018 House & Garden began following the renovation of the British designer and creative consultant Matilda Goad's new home. Our aim was to create a series charting the journey of a house over a period of years, to reassure people decorating their own homes that it doesn’t happen overnight. That creating a layered, interesting interior is something that happens in stages, and that those stages aren't always linear or smooth.

For those of us on a tight budget, I would strongly recommend investing in some evening classes on subjects such as upholstery, soft furnishings, and woodwork. I have been able to achieve things like this that I would never have been able to afford otherwise.
Such a wonderful idea! Thank you
Thx you
That is a great suggestion, thank you
Im totally with you on this one, i’ve made some of my lamps and people often ask where i bought those, and it feels so good to say you made them : )
Great to hear! Any tips on which courses? Thanks🙏
I've LOVED every minute of this series on Matilda's home. Don't want it to end! Love her eclectic and colourful style.

As someone stuck in rented, Matilda's colour, vision and aesthetic are inspiring and beautiful. My literal dream home.
There is a wonderful movement now where renters are making their rentals their own. There are so many fantastic temporary solutions to just cozy your space and make it more personal to you. I hope you can make your dream of owning a reality, but don’t wait till then to make your space more beloved to you ❤️
❤❤❤ Matilda Goad has got to be one of the best presenters I've watched. The way she speaks and explains is so educational and fun. ❤❤❤
Matilda has perfect taste in interior decor. She’s made her home both stylish yet practical and not too staged. The garden is perfect and made so easy to use yet so beautiful to be in. Please can we have more!! 🦋
I love how she pronounces room :) and these series with Mathilda they could have lasted for ever if you'd ask me, very entertaining and fun to watch.
I find it so annoying. I don't know why. I actually had to mute the video. 😕

I love this series… especially Matilda herself. Love her style and personality.
Really love Matilda's style and approach! It serves as inspiration for those of us on much smaller budgets alongside those with a bit more to spend. Love this series and hope it continues.
I’m a trend setter not a trend follower. I source things from all over the world and always buy what speaks to me. Love your style….
Wish I was there shopping, been thrifting all my life and by now I’m in my 50’s and you’d think I would slow down but know, it’s my therapy, I have so many unique pieces and clothes/shoes, I love antique furniture, drapes, African art, rugs just everything how can l not but enjoyed your site.
Loved this series! The space is so charming and what a wonderful story she has created through the process of building a home
This how I've shopped since the early 70s when I was just starting out! Old is still new...yeah!

I'd go broke if I went to your markets!! I see so much I LOVE!!
Loved this series, would be great if there were links to all the sources Matilda mentions , and the written descriptions are edited out far too quickly to be able to read.
I never had any interest in going to the UK, but now I totally want to visit those vintage markets!
Loved this. So inspiring and now I have so many ideas swirling around in my head.

Very beautiful 🌷🌷👌👌
Brilliant and so very helpful
beautiful !
I can't read a sentence and look at what it's describing in 1.5 seconds. And then because it's such a short bit it doesn't even show on the timeline. I literally have to rewind over and over again.
She does have more of a feminin look ..it works. Her personality shines through in her design.
Love her
Beautiful house and decoration! I love it! What colour is the cuppord on the right side? Red earth ? And the gree Thank you in advance very much to let me know. Love to you from Paris
Where would I find an upholsterer? The fabrics on sofas in shops these days are so dull!
Great !!! Love that👌🏻🥰🙏🏻
Wonderful,
She is a baby in design, but on the right track.
Matilda is chic as much her taste. it is really enjoyable. I am a bit schocked to see that in the market in full pandemic no one wearing masks...other wise it is a very nice mishmash personal enriching video. thank you.
The house is great but I love that blouse she’s wearing! Beautiful and unique. Anybody know who sells them? Not that I could afford it . . . . .
Very nice👍👏😊
At 6:01, the lady wearing lamp as hat
cool video. However, the music in the video is a bit much tho, sometimes hearing some silence is a good thing. at least lower the volume..
Can we get more Matilda please??
How important is it to wear dungarees during the process?
Great!

ANNOYING & USELESS music ! 😆
That is ugly😂😂😂
Mr David Nicholls, deputy editor of ‘House and Garden’ (UK), designed a pictograph of stick-figure corpses, arranged in a numbered grid of equal columns and rows, upon a piece of paper. He then, with a pencil, filled in the lines between the bodies so as to outline a Swastika, laughing at his own punchline: “This game is called - Connect the Jews!”
