- World Health Organization definition of C.M :
A clinical syndrome characterized by coma for at least 1 hour post seizure or after hypoglycemia has been adequately treated.
It’s associated with asexual forms of Plasmodium falciparum on peripheral blood smears.
It is the most severe neuro complication of Plasmodium falciparum
Affecting children the most
Mortality is very high
More in Tropical countries
In Sub-Saharan Africa
Children under 15 mostly in Africa
Mostly in adults in South East Asia
Hundreds of Millions are affected yearly
Just 1% of all malaria will be severe malaria
Cerebral malaria is the worst neuro problem associated with severe malaria
• SEVERE MALARIA
Plasmodium falciparum is epileptogenic and mostly in children
*Phenobarbital will be helpful but high dose for treatment or prophylaxis can kill
Coma for at least 1hour after termination of seizures or treatment of hypoglycemia
Presence of asexual forms of Plasmodium falciparum on PBF or PBS
Other causes of coma are already ruled out
May not be able to rule out other confounding factors
Some will have :
Epilepsy
Cerebral malaria associated seizures is febrile seizures with
Gen-Tonic-Clonic & secondary generalized

I recovered with no brain injury thanks to God and my Doctors in Mozambique. Dr.could not believe I survived.
