So iconic is the four candles sketch, that when Ronnie C (the little guy) died; four candles were carried at the head of his funeral procession.

While I wouldn't get into an argument over which were the best Two Ronnies sketches, these two are the sketches I always think of when anyone mentions them.
For me, they are the ones which define them.

The Four Candles sketch had an alternative ending which was performed at the London Palladium. Instead of Ronnie C misreading the list, and thinking that 'bollocks' - instead of billhooks - was written there, the alternative was, as Ronnie Barker explained, "a large slovenly girl came in, looked at the list, looked at the customer, and said, "Right then! What sort of knockers you after?"

    • @MeFreeBee
      @MeFreeBee Рік тому +4

Part of the problem with the original is that billhooks are quite obscure even to a British audience. They are a traditional agricultural/forestry tool, sort of a cross between a hand axe and a machete.

@@MeFreeBee Exactly. Just as Ronnie Barker expanded on in The Two Ronnies Sketchbook, in which he said, "Too obscure, too coarse, but we did it". I still have my great grandfather's billhook, and the handle has needed replacing, but it works fine at 150 years old.

@@edf6607 However, when the local blacksmith made it for it's intended purpose it was referred to as 'Millison's billhook' and it's familial reference point was as his billhook so therefore as that familial reference point from day one to this it has served it's function as a reference point as being known as 'Milison's billhook; even though it had no longer been exactly the same physical object! ;-)

There were lots of small hardware corner shops in my younger days and there were a few misunderstandings . The sheer brilliance of the two Ronnies was unmatched . They both had a real understanding of life and used wordplay to memorable effect . They both had their own careers in film and tv and weren't just a double act .

Connor. The Potty is what we used as kids before we could get on the toilet. Many years ago we didn’t have indoor toilets, there was a shed with a toilet in it. In the winter, especially after dark and in the middle of the night the last thing you wanted to do was to venture in the rain and snow to the outside toilet. We all had potty’s then. We also used to call them po’s or a really odd one a gazunder, for goes under the bed.
The Four Candles sketch is one of their best known. In the 90’s we were shown it in a team meeting to emphasise the value of clear speech. By the way, at the end the assistant goes to a draw marked “Bill Hooks”. I’m not sure what you them in the US but they used for cutting down shrubbery. When you say Bill Hooks it sounds like Bollocks, a tame swear for gentlemen's reproductive organs.

Hardware stores like this are rare nowadays in the UK but you can still find them in some small towns.
my ex-father-in-law owned & ran a DIY/Hardware shop like this in the east end of London in Hackney.
One day he was visiting a friend in south London who also ran a similar shop.
Ronnie Barker - the big one, came in.
Ken, always a really amusing man, had loads of anecdotes of the funny things that had happened in his shop over the years, & told Ronnie about them....
A few weeks later, he got a cheque - which is still uncashed & now framed - as a thank you......

This reminds me a little of when I worked in a shop that sold region-free DVD players. By law they had to be sold as region 2, but there was a code in the box that the customer could input on the remote to switch it to region free. Well this irate guy rang us and complained that the DVD player he just bought won't play American DVDs.
This guy had a lower working class south-eastern English accent, pronouncing "th" like "f". That's important to the misunderstanding. It went like this:
"You need to switch it region free sir"
"REGION 3 IS SAAHF EAST ASIA MATE."
    "No, not region THREE, region-FREE."
    "THAT'S WHAT I SAID REGION 3."
"Not three. Free. F. The letter F. Fuh fun fuh. Fuh-ree."
"ARE YOU F*CKING STUPID SON? I WANNA PLAY AMERICAN DVDS."
"Yes. You need to tell the DVD player to be region FREEEEEE."
"REGION 3 IS SAAAAHF... EAST... ASIA, YOU C*NT!!!" *Slams the phone down*
