So iconic is the four candles sketch, that when Ronnie C (the little guy) died; four candles were carried at the head of his funeral procession.
"youre game m'lady" when he was bringing her some game (pheasant) - also means she's up for a bit of fun ;)
While I wouldn't get into an argument over which were the best Two Ronnies sketches, these two are the sketches I always think of when anyone mentions them.
For me, they are the ones which define them.
I always love seeing Ronnie C managing not to corpse at "Sore tips"
The Four Candles sketch had an alternative ending which was performed at the London Palladium. Instead of Ronnie C misreading the list, and thinking that 'bollocks' - instead of billhooks - was written there, the alternative was, as Ronnie Barker explained, "a large slovenly girl came in, looked at the list, looked at the customer, and said, "Right then! What sort of knockers you after?"
Part of the problem with the original is that billhooks are quite obscure even to a British audience. They are a traditional agricultural/forestry tool, sort of a cross between a hand axe and a machete.
@@MeFreeBee Exactly. Just as Ronnie Barker expanded on in The Two Ronnies Sketchbook, in which he said, "Too obscure, too coarse, but we did it". I still have my great grandfather's billhook, and the handle has needed replacing, but it works fine at 150 years old.
@@josefschiltz2192 i bet it's only had 2 new blades and 3 new handles in its time ;)
@@edf6607 In which case, if both parts have been replaced, is it the same billhook??
@@edf6607 However, when the local blacksmith made it for it's intended purpose it was referred to as 'Millison's billhook' and it's familial reference point was as his billhook so therefore as that familial reference point from day one to this it has served it's function as a reference point as being known as 'Milison's billhook; even though it had no longer been exactly the same physical object! ;-)
There were lots of small hardware corner shops in my younger days and there were a few misunderstandings . The sheer brilliance of the two Ronnies was unmatched . They both had a real understanding of life and used wordplay to memorable effect . They both had their own careers in film and tv and weren't just a double act .
Written about a shop in Broadstairs, Harringtons I think it's called - and still there, or was just a couple of years ago.
There's one still in York called Barnitts and you can buy practically anything you can think of.
Connor. The Potty is what we used as kids before we could get on the toilet. Many years ago we didn’t have indoor toilets, there was a shed with a toilet in it. In the winter, especially after dark and in the middle of the night the last thing you wanted to do was to venture in the rain and snow to the outside toilet. We all had potty’s then. We also used to call them po’s or a really odd one a gazunder, for goes under the bed.
The Four Candles sketch is one of their best known. In the 90’s we were shown it in a team meeting to emphasise the value of clear speech. By the way, at the end the assistant goes to a draw marked “Bill Hooks”. I’m not sure what you them in the US but they used for cutting down shrubbery. When you say Bill Hooks it sounds like Bollocks, a tame swear for gentlemen's reproductive organs.
I think it was more that he didn't know why calling someone potty would be a joke. Potty meaning gone a bit crazy
"Potty" is probably slang for "chamber pot": the vessel, described in the comment, that one used to have under one's bed for use during the night when lavatories used to be outside in the yard.
@@MrBulky992 he's giving him his potty, but he's saying 'you're potty', as in 'you're crazy'
@@chrisnorman1902 He also wasn't aware of "crackers" - another term for crazy. So easy to miss idioms from another culture. I have a slightly different problem. I've lived 32 years in the UK and 23 in the USA. These days I can barely remember what slang is from which country and have been known to tell inuendo-based jokes that would make sense in the other country but simply sound BAD in the one where I'm telling it....
"Potty" was a contraction of "chamberpot".
Classic four candles
Potty, nuts and crackers all mean crazy🤗
Can't believe I've not seen you react to Four Candles before now!
me too
He HAS done the 'Four Candles' before! - He's is re-watching and uploading quite a lot of vids he's reviewed before...
All your reactions to British shows are paying off. It looks like you understood all the jokes here. 👍
He didn.t understand "Billhooks".
For a long time I've gone back and forth as to which my absolute favourite sketch of all time is...Dead Parrot or this. Though I'm still predominantly a Python fan, I've decided this is The best sketch.
Dick van Dykes name in Chitty Chitty bang Bang was Caractacus Potts, Crackpot, Potty, got it? :)
to be fair, a lot of British ppl your age would struggle with some of the references cos this is mostly from the 70s and so much has changed since then. The talent is in how well the sketches were constructed. btw "Billhooks" at the end of the 4 candles sketch is intended to imply "b*ll*cks" ;)
It's not me, it's everybody else
'The Two Ronnie's from BBC television, is comedic gold. Don't miss it.
😄👍 I find it amazing that you can follow and (mostly) understand British humour….Nicely Done 🤗 By the way, to explain the last joke, Billhooks sounds a lot like a coarse British curse word (bollocks) Thanks for getting to this classic…You are always fun to watch 🤩
Potty just means daft or crazy.
Hi Connor, just to say that 'Potty' Cracker's' 'Fat' 'Nuts' the butler is calling him stupid basically!
Continuity Alert! The reel of hose disappears from the counter top without the shopkeeper taking it away before he gets the letter 'o's from the shelf!
Hardware stores like this are rare nowadays in the UK but you can still find them in some small towns.
my ex-father-in-law owned & ran a DIY/Hardware shop like this in the east end of London in Hackney.
One day he was visiting a friend in south London who also ran a similar shop.
Ronnie Barker - the big one, came in.
Ken, always a really amusing man, had loads of anecdotes of the funny things that had happened in his shop over the years, & told Ronnie about them....
A few weeks later, he got a cheque - which is still uncashed & now framed - as a thank you......
potty is another term for nuts/mad etc
The bigger Ronnie was one if the finest 'wordsmiths' there's been.
He had such a fantastic knowledge of the English language.
There was a hardware shop like this in our town, it had been there since 1823. It closed last year 🙁
Good on you mate, from Canberra, Australia. The Two Ronnie's were amongst the best of British humour. Ronnie Barker, I reckon, was the funniest man in the World. Check him out. Corbett was a worthy sidekick. Thanks for the clip digger.
one of the best British comedies of all times, have a look at 'Only fools & Horses'
i watched this when it was first broadcast years ago , still as funny today !
I saw them perform live when I was 16... absolutely word perfect
Need to react to Swedish Made Simple on here and Bert & Charlie on Daily Motion. Both Two Ronnies sketches! PS You’ve done Four Candles before and made the same “poop” comment!
Ronnie B once said the Swedish Made Simple sketch was the first example of texting
@@edf6607R S !
"You're potty" as in, you're mad.
This reminds me a little of when I worked in a shop that sold region-free DVD players. By law they had to be sold as region 2, but there was a code in the box that the customer could input on the remote to switch it to region free. Well this irate guy rang us and complained that the DVD player he just bought won't play American DVDs.
This guy had a lower working class south-eastern English accent, pronouncing "th" like "f". That's important to the misunderstanding. It went like this:
"You need to switch it region free sir"
"REGION 3 IS SAAHF EAST ASIA MATE."
"No, not region THREE, region-FREE."
"THAT'S WHAT I SAID REGION 3."
"Not three. Free. F. The letter F. Fuh fun fuh. Fuh-ree."
"ARE YOU F*CKING STUPID SON? I WANNA PLAY AMERICAN DVDS."
"Yes. You need to tell the DVD player to be region FREEEEEE."
"REGION 3 IS SAAAAHF... EAST... ASIA, YOU C*NT!!!" *Slams the phone down*
tbh most of these "gag's / joke's" should end in the word WHOOSH !!! because when it flies over your head it sounds like WHOOSH
Brilliant sketches, shame these two were taken off the airways. They are both sadly past now but will be remembered for saturday night mayhem and hi jinks. The Two Ronnies are still standing the test of time.
Hi Connor, nuts, crackers and potty are all euphemisms for crazy or deranged.
The original script sold at auction for nearly 50 grand.
Potty is a Toilet under the bed. Before a flushing toilet.
Lol Connor funny hey 😂😂😂
👍💜👍💜
'Potty' and 'crackers' and 'nuts' mean crazy.
Hello trucker Connor
Don't think enough is given to Ronnie C in this. His slowly increasing frustration is brilliant.
Also, the last joke (bill hooks) fell flat with Ronnie B. He explained in the best of show they did later that he thought up a better ending but it was too late, so bill hooks (in his accent bill'ooks or bollocks) is what we got.
Love the gay trucker look
