    I definitely agree on this being the best bang for the buck under $10k. Not only is it less expensive then the E90 335i, but you avoid the Turbo, Injector, Fuel Pump, Intake, and other know issues with the N54 engine. (Though they are a major hoot to drive).
    I think a great combo for longevity is this E90 + N52B30 + 6MT + RWD. A lot less to go wrong w/o the Auto transmission, AWD, or a turbo.
    Also, a model with all the options will not be that much different in price now than a base model. (sport suspension / seats / steering + comfort upgrades )

      ChewbaccaFetus the speedo only goes up to 160. You can disable the governor but even if you hit the 160 mark, you aren't going 160, probably more like 145-150.
      With mods+a tune, however, you can increase the rev limiter and increase the hp by a decent amount. You may be able to get 165 then but it'd be pretty hard

    I love my 2007 328i (also in montego blue metallic) so much that...this is probably the 10th time I've watched this video. You really nailed everything in this video. After 10 years of ownership it has 120k miles and still makes me giddy every time I drive it, and my maintenance/repair costs are STILL lower than for a new Honda Accord. Amazingly, I haven't had to do the water pump, but gaskets, window regulators, etc. Some guys on the forums have gotten more than 400k miles out of these cars. Amazing.
    I owned a 550i, which was awesome, but I love everything about this car for what it is. So much that I got a 2012 X3 because I love, love, love the N52 engine.
    Great vid!

    • @robchiofalo6138
      @robchiofalo6138 4 роки тому

      How much in repair cost would you say over the 10 years?

    • @bobsmockus
      @bobsmockus 2 роки тому

      @@robchiofalo6138 So I probably should have said "my ownership costs" instead of "maintenance/repair costs." I tracked everything with the car. The total I paid to own it was about $17k over 10 years. Yes, that's still a lot, but it comes out to $1700/yr. That includes 2 full brake/rotor jobs, 2 spark plug changes and coils, 2 battery changes, 3 sets of tires, all the gaskets (oil pan, oil filter housing, valve cover), oil/brake fluid/coolant changes, etc which I'd call maintenance rather than repair. Debatable on the gaskets...
      That also factors in me paying dealers for the first 5 years. If it wasn't for that, I'd guess the total cost would be 30-50% lower. I also did a LOT of preventative maintenance because I planned to keep the car forever, but an unexpected move made me sell it. Sold it at 105k miles, now it's at 140k and still going strong.
      I now have an X3 with the exact same engine and I do all the routine stuff myself. Just did a ton of work for about $1000 that would have cost me $7000 at the dealer.

    To anyone looking into getting one, I’d strongly suggest not getting the AWD model unless you REALLY need it. I get by with a RWD model in Michigan with some good tires. The AWD system is a liability in these cars, meaning that it just adds a bunch of weight, complication, and potential maintenance headaches. If you have to do a WP/thermostat job, it makes it much more difficult.

    I eliminated all the cabin rattles, replaced all broken parts, installed Eibach lowering springs, swapped for 335i front brakes, and had some cosmetic touch-ups that makes it look like an M sport version (There was no M sport package for 330i in Hong Kong back then).

Runs, and natural aspirated motor, M-Sport pak., 3 stage manifold a tune... And gone. Also the car is well built and will give a thrill that no other car in the regular market can do. Remember turbos are problems for any car except if your running on the track. Then with no question run with the house power. And what ever people say, it in one ear and out the other. I just drove a brand new $40K+ F30 330i for a loaner while my 2011 328 was in the shop at the dealer (vanos bolt recall). I couldn't wait to get back in the E90, it's such a superior handling car. Yes the F30's pretty good in sport mode but it's just not the same.

I did water pump,thermostat,coils,new seals for engine cap and power steering fluid all for under $2,000. Do your research find the flaws and do all maintenance on your bmw at once.

I use it to deliver pizza now, its on its original clutch and drives smooth as butter. Drives likes it brand new still. It does have an oil leak, and I decided because of its miles and age and because it cost way more than the value of the car to fix to just use it for delivery until it dies instead of fixing it.

    I resonate with so many aspects of this video! I've owned cars from nearly ever major car maker, including sports cars ranging from a Mazda Miata to a Porsche 928. My E90 328xi is my overall favorite of the bunch. In fact, if I could only pick one car I had to drive the rest of my life, it would be my car with a slightly different option package and maybe a super-charger thrown on for some fun. The wild thing is, that could easily be had for under $20k all-in.
    It's a 50/50 balance car with excellent handling. In that way, it reminds me of a blend of my Miata and Porsche (also 50/50 weight ratio cars) but in a passenger sedan. I love the styling of the car. It is pretty much timeless, IMO. And the engine.... absolutely yes on the buttery smooth. I agree on the transmission. That's one thing I'd change (as I have the manual). Not one of my favorite stick-shift cars I've owned. I think a lot of that is the clutch, though. I'm considering playing with those spacers that go under on the floor. I think it engages too far out. Anyway, even after 3 years, I feel like I'm inconsistent with the clutch... which has never happened with my past cars (all but a couple have been manual).
    I'd also correct people when they talk about reliability. Most actually mean maintenance. Few cars these days are unreliable (like typically break down, leaving one stranded). A used E90, even quite used, is still very reliable. I'm very close to 200k miles (over 300k km), and I wouldn't hesitate jumping in it and driving across the country (and Canada is a BIG place).
    I've owned it for 3 years now, and it hasn't broken down at all (knock on wood). Now, I have had to fix a couple of those darned oil seals. I've had to replace the shocks/struts. I had to replace a front drive-shaft. I've had to replace that notorious water pump. I've had to do brakes. I'm sure that cost more than it would have to do similar work on a Toyota, but I doubt given the age/milage, the Toyota wouldn't need similar work done, it would just cost less. (I'd guess maybe 1.5x to 2.5x more for a BMW.) But, I got the car for $4200 and some people mistake it for new. It just needed a few fixes. (I need to add it up, but maybe ~$12k in it overall so far? That's not so bad considering the nice ride I enjoy each day.)

      I'll keep my response short n simple, AMEN👍👍👍👍😁 LOVE MY 2007 328XI, especially with the muffler n resonator delete, it sounds unbelievably sick, the noise that 3.0 N/A engine puts out is crazy for a V6, and I didnt even put the headers or a new intake yet lol..all I got is a K&N air filter and the ROAR PEDAL throttle control, which by the way I highly recommend on this car, for 159$$ your not gonna find another MOD, that really wakes up your car, concerning acceleration and sound, it makes all the difference, definitely makes your car faster 0 to 60, factory 6.3 secs , modded with ROAR PEDAL 5.7 ish secs ,big difference race wise, trust me especially with a manual, I do suggest removing the rev limiter when you install a throttle control..but I know there is a lot of cars faster in this class, but concerning the whole package, as far as handling, pick up, braking, comfort, n sound if you have exhaust modded, I'll take on anyone on a windy, hilly mountain road, n I'll most likely gap you easily 👍👍love my 32 328xi, plan to always have one as a daily, n the M4 only for special occasions lol..😁👍👍👍💪💪🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪🚘🚘🚘

My son's just broke the Intake Bolts and the local dealer serviced it for him for the past 2 years and never mentioned the issue that BMW extended the warranty for 10 years. Of course his just broke in June and Warranty ended in March on his car. Really disappointed with Century BMW in Huntsville AL for not informing him during alignments, oil changes, and other previous appointments. Doesn't appear to be terrible home fix as I am working on replacing bolts, but would be much easier to replace before breaking. REPLACE ALUMINUM BOLTS FROM FACTORY!

      335d is just ridiculous. Like 400 lb-ft from the factory, almost quicker than the 335i I hear. Plus diesel is cheaper than premium where I live haha. I upgraded from a Jetta TDI since VW bought my car back and gave me money for the scandal (and I missed my E36

    I used to own a 2006 E90 325i last year until I upgraded to a 545i early this year and I agree on everything u said except for the manual part. BMW's are amazing in manual , this is my 3rd manual BMW and I absolutely love it. Had the chance to drive my friend's automatic one and I was really disappointed about how boring the car was compared to a Manual. U definitely should give it a 2nd chance man. Btw amazing video and ur absolutely right about how it is worth it to get one of these for the price they are going for currently.

      Thanks man! The manual thing, I don't know really. I've only driven used cars, so maybe the bushings are worn or something. I just don't like the feel. I feel like Japanese cars in general have a much more positive engagement within the shifter. Outside of that I love these things. Enjoy your 5 series!

    Minor correction: the Sport Package in the E90 only gives you a lower/stiffer suspension in the RWD models. "Xi" sport package upgrades were limited to the seats and steering wheel and maybe the sport wheels...

    German cars are made to last 4 years or 50,000 miles. After that you will spend a fortune
    to keep them running. If you have the extended warranty for 6 years or 100,000 miles it helps but plan on driving a lot of loaner cars from the dealer while yours is in the shop.

      Having a car in for service does not mean having a car in for repair. Go to he Mercedes repair center if you want to see a log-jam.
      For $500 to change to oil and $100 for inspect fees I would expect a loaner too.

    Since owning a 2011 328i, anything else has been disappointing to drive. However, between the warning lights, not starting in cold weather, replacing coil packs, leaking oil from valve cover, etc. Leaves me wanting to get a normal, boring car that works all of the time.

    I bought an E85 Z4 with 78k miles for only $6,600. It’s a blast and I can get up to 28 mpg on a tank. 32 on the highway. And they’re BEAUTIFUL. Always leaders in design, so it doesn’t look dated. Check out my videos on it.

    I'm scared to buy one of these. My cousin has a 2011 328 coupe with only 40k miles and it's in the shop more than it is on the road. For that same reason he's gonna lease a M4 next to avoid problems once his finance is done on his current 3. Only reason I'm considering is because i already have a reliable Toyota so this 3 series will be my 2nd car, just don't know if i really wanna dump $9K to buy out a car that's more than likely guaranteed some pricey problems down the line.

    • @EatSleepDrive
      @EatSleepDrive  7 років тому +8

      Unfortunately it's the price you have to pay for cars with a lot of engineering and complexity built in. They're amazing when they work and some are more reliable than others. I certainly wouldn't recommend one to someone who isn't willing to do their own work, and that's not always for everyone. Leasing these is certainly the way to go if you have the means. If you're going to keep your daily and pickup something as a fun car, get an E46 M3 or something like that. A regular 3 series is great, but it's great as a daily since it's comfort, refinement and fun. But if you already have a daily, get a car that is higher on the fun meter for nice weather enjoyment. Just my 2 cents.

      @Don Boss Define fun? Adjust alignment on the Lexus and you have a oversteering car at that point. Beyond that so many folks claim BMW is more fun when a bushing change is all that's needed to make a Lexus or Toyota more responsive. Not worth the BMW reliability issues after.

    Nice video and car. Have owned 3 E39 530I's with the straight 6 of different decades. Currently a 2002 E39 530I. Best cars that I have ever owned. But once you start replacing the plastic shit in the engine bay that has broken, because of being brittle, you're on your way. 2 of my E39 530I's had near 300K and going strong...,
