- The McGill Squat (in recognition of Prof. Stuart McGill, from Canada) is a great exercise to improve the activation of the lateral gluts (gluteus medius and minimus). The goal is to keep the knees behind the toes and in the midlines of the 2nd and 3rd toe. The mechanism is to try to tear a piece of paper by pulling the feet apart on the carpet.
Brilliant this is valuable information for anyone training with barbells
Do you "tear the paper" on the way up, on the way down, or all throughout the squat? Thank you.
Hey sobojetty, try to "tear the paper"throughout the entire range. The goal is to feel the activation in the lateral glut/hip region.
Thanks for the answer. I like squats and this helps a lot. Appreciate it.
there is a torque power in the hip joint thats why.
That is a very shallow squat depth. Why is this so?
The depth of the squat is not specifically what we are looking for here. More the activation and biomechanical pattern. If someone can hold correct "form", controls the lordosis, is aware of the knee in relation to the foot and hip then we are happy to see more depth in the squat. At our clinic we don't want to see loss of lordosis and knees wobbling all over the place just to get depth.
