Boating is a lot of fun. They depreciate a lot and fast. If you find a good one, and can bring it back like he has you reap the dividends. He worked diligently on that tub. Thru the sweat of the hot sun, bugs, rain, mud , mold and crud. Big salute to you for a job well done. In the end you turned an eye sore into a thing of great use and beauty. Awesome job.
The labor costs is the “deal breaker”. If someone has the skills, knowledge, location & tools to DIY it, then a boat like this you would probably get your ROI back and have a decent boat. My brother bought a 36’ sailboat at auction for $10K. He put thousands into it and labor for a year. He’s now got a boat for money no where near the cost of a comparable one. But he’s retired and that was all he did until til it was done.
Appreciate the breakdown on this. What it highlights is that unless you have the skills and time, it’s not worth messing with derelict boats because the labor costs will exceed what the boat is worth- which is probably what it was abandoned in the first place. $100/hr seems cheap but maybe that’s a regional rate. I would have expected $150-200 range
@@datamack on a positive the boat had only ~100 hours on it, then sat. My mind is blown on how someone walks away from a boat they purchased like this.
the elephant in the room is that most “fixer upper” boats i see >80%) have very old or bad engines, i see way too many “ i found a 1980 Ferrari in a barn for $500 and all it needed fresh gas and a battery” rebuilds.
I’m planning on upgrading , the same items you did to this boat like speaker, cup holder , wash down pump , switches, you recommend I wet sand and buff then replace ? Im scared I’ll dirty again once I start touching the old cables and cutting fiber glass to fit new GPS. Thank you for the great series !! Keep them coming .
I'd run all the cabling and wiring and stuff, then wet sand and buff before installing the panels and what not on the dash, then finish up the boat and wet sand and buff as the last thing :)
And, none of this includes the fork lift and other miscellaneous equipment that most of us don't have or even have access to. I'm fairly handy, but I'm not sure I'd tackle that big a project by myself.
I have rebuilt and restored my 1976 AMF/Robalo 19' fishing boat from ground to up such as fresh closed cell foam under the floor, custom build aluminum 60 gallons fuel tank, fiberglass repair, upgrade wiring and devices, fresh upholstery cushions, fresh brand new Suzuki 140hp and rebult and upgrade boat trailer in 2 years and cost me nearly $20k. I worked very hard blood, sweat and tears on that boat n so much fun afterward debt free and still going. Everything I paid was cash only no credit card that was hard part.
Like always with renovation projects(cars, boats, what ever), if you cant do it your self and do it for fun you will never get your investment back. Never the less, thanks for an entertaining series.👍 (I'm awaiting spring so i can get my 15", 20hp tiller back into the waters of the Swedish west coast)
Boat looks good, raccoons eat my boat, wiring seats, trolling motor , pedal both fish finders, carpet etc. About lost the full fishing season, rewiring and replacing about everything. Your videos show a lot of details, but to show the real time it takes and what is really involved to do the work is another thing. Pulling decking to get to and inspect damage , while replacing anything that is in question because "it's opened up" is truly difficult to capture unless you've done it. Again boat looks great, wish we had the resources with easy access to boating parts and yards up North. The seasonal thing makes it harder to knock things out. Keep the videos going my friend!
20 year old boat I’m guessing it might have wood for stringers and other structures below deck. Not sure when composite materials took over on Whalers. Was all this checked before that $14,000 was put into it? Also, 12 years is a long time for that motor to be sitting unused. Surprised if that doesn’t need some work. Beautiful job refurbishing, turned out nice.

I didn’t see the cost of the Bimini top, but I thought I heard u say in one video that the upholstery guy was only charging 1500 for doing the cushions.
Now it’s to see who will purchase it for that much. Let’s see what it’ll actually sell for in time. You forgot a few more costs such as engine replacement, HD equipment needed to do that, move the boat and bottom paint. Someone would still need income of sorts on top of their 40 hour work week wrenching on the boat. So pause times for actual work, shipping time, etc..
In 2008 Brunswick Boat Group honour’d claim and warranty repair at $35 an hour. Interesting break down. But, for a person that can do it by themselves don’t necessarily need to spend; $2800 on a full set cusions, stereo for $800 or the very expensive nice ta have: The lift bracket and Raptor. But you get the idea that having a boat that needs a makeover is expensive, and many hours of labour.
Love the series, very difficult to find a straight bullet information blog that shows you the inners in an open way. On the other hand, the real question for me would be, would you buy this old/restored boat for 40k or would you spend 60k on a new one? Thanks Aaron looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Hey Chugaaa! Thank you for the donation the other day! Much appreciated and that helps a ton, thank you! I would, I totally think that $40K is a great price for this boat, brand new these things are closer to $100K or more, I've seen the newer ones with 200hp's for like $75K but not $60, right now the market is softening and with inflation and the economy, nobody has money to buy right now. But $40K for the boat in this condition is a great deal, the boat's perfect for the Keys :)
The JD Power average retail value for that boat is $23,150. Even if you add the nice accessories and factor in that all the work that went into it makes it 'like new', you still can't even get to $30K. And no one is going to pay that for a 20 year old boat... much less $45K. It is a good video though. I'm retired and restore boats for myself, friends, and sometimes people referred to me by word of mouth. I'm saving this video to show people who ask me to restore their boat to show how it can cost way more than the value of their boat to restore it and often it just makes more sense to buy a newer one. About the only reason I can think of to put that much time and money into a boat like this, is if there is a sentimental attachment to it.
$100 per hr is cheap 💀 Only a specialist gets paid this much, the mechanic/ electrician. Shit kickers do all the polishing and sanding and misc screwin items for a little over minimum wage. You can cut that labour value in half by using the appropriate skilled labour where they are needed. As a business, you dont pay a $100 ph mechanic to pressure wash, sand, install brackets.

According to your electrical 2 week calculation. I would assume if I brought my, let's say 10-20 year old boat. It wouldn't even be worth keeping it if you'll charge 10k for twice less wiring than cheapest car on the market. Everybody got to greed i guess. So your boat is $45-55k if you want to make few bucks. 😂😂😂😂😂 buy new.
@malekodesouza7255 House electrician on West coast charges around $150 in hour( license, years of schools and apprenticeship, advertising ect).
