Making My Victorian Ancestors' Dresses - 1880s Dress

  • I have a family album from the Victorian Era. I don't know who any of my ancestors in the album were, but I REALLY admire and adore their fashion sense. I don't have any existing dresses of theirs, those are lost to time, but since I can sew I figured I could attempt to recreate them. There are many different styles of dress in the album, from multiple decades in the Victorian Era and the Edwardian Era, but in this video I decided to create an 1880s dress inspired by my family's photos. Come with me on my adventure in recreating my ancestor's wardrobe!

I've come across a lot of very similar velvet photo albums, and almost all of them had or have a thin tin floral element on top of the cover. Likely, something like that filled in the floral depression in the front cover of yours.

Would have brass plates where the velvet is worn down.

I’m in the process of making a mid 1890s dress that is inspired by a photo of my 2nd great-grandmother from 1895. I’m making it for my daughter. When I’m done I’m having my daughter’s photo made to recreate the original photo.

Repurposing textiles was a skill used a lot by our ancestors. My grandmother used to cut down her old dresses to make dresses for her daughters.

You could make one or two different skirts, and then change all the shirtwaists to make all the different styles. I would give just about anything to have an historic wardrobe to wear. You are blessed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but we don't get to see much plus size representation in the historical community apart from lady rabecca fashions, so it is quite pleasant to see some of that here

In the days if " the bustle " there were chairs made to accommodate it.
I know as I Have one. A Victorian sewing chair.
    Beautiful HEAVILY carved and
IMPOSSIBLE to sit in...at least comfortably.( or without a bustle ).
Looks good in my reading corner tho😸

Hello Victoria.....be careful with your old picture album that has the green wallpaper like paper design inside...I've learned they used arsenic in that green color which filled victorian homes, and many people got sick. I think it's worth checking out,..and/or maybe wearing gloves at least in the future. I love watching your talent in sewing!! God Bless you in all your fashion endeavors!!

Wish me luck! One day I want to go to the historical society to which my grandpa just gave our historic album. I think he should have guessed I would have been interested in it! It’s most unfortunate I saw it at his house and then next thing you know he had passed away and I found out he had donated it to the local historical society! It had lithographs, really old black and white photographs and it had a bad relief scene of a soldier and maiden in pewter for the cover! Truly an heirloom! I would just like to ask the museum if they even display it and if it’s not a prized piece of theirs, could I please have our family visual history back! Any advice how I could best approach this?

Thank you for the video, and I hope you do not mind, that fron what I can recall Combinations were around and are accurate to the 2nd Bustle Era.
For example, there is a Combinations Pattern from the book "The National Garment Cutter Book of Diagrams" by Goldsberry & Doran, Chicago. [from old catalog]. Which is dated to 1888.
It can be found specifically on page 82 and you can find it on "Internet Archive"

Oh dear, you didn't learn cursive. That's Jammie, Janie and John - 1910 on the first page. Please learn cursive - it's far too useful to let die...
I'm the present keeper of around 150 years of family photos. I have a slightly broken 1910's version of your family photo album. It's so rare these people are kept together these days. Either they are your family, extended family or very good friends. Cart de visit were traded like trading cards. Often you'll find the photographers address.
This is a fantastic project. Absolutely beautifully done.
