The front strap/if you’re talking about the 18 inch strap in front of the opening that you sit in, that is what you wrap around your paddle and latch onto the hook if you want to secure the paddle while you’re sitting on the kayak.
Are you happy with them? I saw one reviewer said it wasn’t tracking straight I really like this kayak ,and want to purchase.how do you feel it tracks? Thank you,your review is very detailed !and mounting looks pretty simple !
it tracks a little. We bought these because they are short and you don't need a permit to use them and they can take a lot on abuse on the creek when hitting rocks.

what sort of brackets you used for the wall?
The brackets we used are padded L brackets form home depot, and they cost about $4 each.
