When I lost a wheel on my Baja I was doing about 60-65 and my wheel and tire was about 2 miles up the road! It'd ground down the lower shock mount, shock and halfway through the bolt! It was everything I had 2 keep control! Like you, almost no idea what has happening! Little bit of noise little bit of wiggle and then it pandemonium! Glad you're safe!
Hahaha! OMG! Glad you are safe! I've never seen a snout bust off a Beetle axle like that before! Over-torqued? Previous owner was a 300lb ape hanging from a 6-foot breaker bar, but ya know.... lol! Hope you made it home!

Could have been over torqued and just plain abused it’s entire life…. Hard to say.

Holy S!!! That is so strange! Knowing you I know you torqued correctly and put the cotter pin and all….never seen that.
