I've raised many liters of kittens in my life, and I have to say that this is one of the most adorable stages. they hiss because they cannot see and only rely on smell. I was usually with the mother while she was with her kittens, so they were pre-occupied and the mother wouldn't get defensive towards me, so it was rare I saw the kittens hiss. likely because I had their mother's smell on my body as I watched them. once it gets to the point where you can touch them, they grow to recognize your energy and voice, so they likely won't hiss at you once you start to pet them.
I experienced it and it's too funny and too cute😅 16 years ago, the first time our cat had a litter with us and the first time I got close to such small kittens
That’s how my boy was when I found him as a wee lad next to his run-over dead mother. Half dead and just hissing, waiting for death to take him. But I said no. Picked the whole mess up, dead mother included and ran to the vet which was thankfully just down the street. Mother was pronounced dead but the baby survived. He is now 14 and the cuddliest fella
My little guy did the same thing when he was a newborn. He grew up into the most cuddly sweetheart of a cat I’ve ever seen. At this stage, everything that isn’t Mom is terrifying. The world is new and cold and scary.

Thank god thats normal. I just got two kittens and one of them was making that same sound, i wasnt sure if it was hissing or if it had a small piece of plastic or something stuck in its throat, it worried me like crazy ha. But hes still jumping around having fun with his new toys.
