I believe that Louise Fletcher (nurse Ratchet) won an Oscar as best Actress for this role.

My parents went to see this when my mom was 700 weeks pregnant with my ass and she HAD to get out of the house.
So (of course) she went into labor in the theater mid movie.
Feb 1st 1976 Jack Nicholson brought me into the world.
My mom has still never seen the end of the movie.

Nicholson's first big break was in Easy Rider (supporting performance), then Five Easy Pieces was his first big lead. The Last Detail was a great perf as well. Then Chinatown, another classic. So many great films on his resume.

This is a movie I can watch over and over again. The battle between nurse Ratchet and Mc Murphy was classic, like two parents who fight all of the time and do see the affect they are having on the kids. The hospital wasn’t really treating the patients, they were just keeping them quite.

You were right about this film being centered around the Chief....many film critics have the same opinion. In the book ( which I've never read) the story is narrated by Chief. In any case, the whole story is about all these poor souls trying to escape the prison of their own minds....and Chief set Mac free from his useless body to be able to escape by his spirit "flying over" the cuckoo's nest. The actor playing the iconic role of Chief was Will Sampson, who had never acted before this movie, but because of his stellar performance and overwhelming popularity after making this film, was signed to the studio and went on to act in over 25 big screen and made for TV movies, as well as having a regular role on the TV series Vegas, as Dan Tanna's friend Chief Twoleaf. You probably have seen Will in other films but did not recognize him. He was Chief Crazy Horse in "The White Buffalo"....Ten Bears in "The Outlaw Josey Wales"....the shaman Taylor in "Poltergeist ll....and played the lead role as Sam Watchman in the TV movie "Relentless". The list of his movies goes on and on! Sadly, Will "Sonny" Sampson,.award winning artist, actor, and activist for all Native people, passed away in 1987, ( only 12 years into his acting career) from complications after a heart/lung transplant. Many people to this day consider him the greatest Native American actor of all time.

That was a terrific analysis of one of the greatest movies ever made and it has the Oscars to back that claim up.

"One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is a story about the individualist vs the institution. Nurse Ratched, as the head nurse, represents the institution, and she has a vested interest in keeping the patients dependent on the institution. She's not really interested in healing the patients. She's only interested in maintaining control - maintaining order.
McMurphy, on the other hand, represents the individual. He treats the other patients as individuals - he treats them with respect and dignity. His unpredictable and unruly behavior, while disruptive to the institution's sense of order, was actually therapeutic for the patients.

Great analysis. You might like to know that this movie was filmed in an actual psychiatric hospital. Dr. Speevy was a psychiatric doctor. That added to the realism. I think its helpful to read between the lines that Billy was most likely abused by his mother. And the most evil authoritarian character in film, Nurse Ratched, used that knowledge to destroy poor Billy. Its also helpful to know that Milos Forman, the director, had just left an authoritarian Eastern European dictatorship. I believe McMurphy clearly cured Billy and Nurse Ratched destroyed him, so I disagree with you when you said both McMurphy and Ratched were bad influences. Nurse Ratched and Authoritarianism are definitely the bad guys. McMurphy represents free-spirit and brotherhood.

Nicholson came into the business from biker movies, which were popular in the late 60s. Then, he had a significant supporting role as an amiable drunken lawyer in one of the greatest and most essential movies 🎬 of the 60s: Easy Rider (1969), starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper (Hippie Bikers). This role focused the nation's attention on Jack Nicholson, the actor. He was absolutely hilarious, especially after they got him to smoke pot. I recommend this movie for you to react to. He had a number of roles between that and his Academy Award winning performance in Cuckoo's Nest, which swept all the biggest Oscars that year, 1975. And, this was back when the Academy Awards were about making great movies, 🎬 and were not the politically-motivated farce they are today.

"The movie got mad dark!" Yeah it caught me off guard the first time too. I loved your face when Mac starts being disgusting about the 15 year old.
They still use electroconvulsive "therapy" on people. That's the most depressing thing about this film, makes me sick inside.

It's worth reading the book, a little more details. But really this is one of those rare cases where the movie is probably better than the book.

Main difference book v movie I think is safe to say is that the book is from the Chief’s pov.

The caos in the movie is life and mcMuphy represents that. Nurse ratchet represents control.

    Try "The Last Detail".
Nicholson also did a lot of westerns prior to Cuckoo's Nest, usually a black hat.

You're right. It's about Chief. Now that I've seen your comments, yes even more. But there were no Super-Heroes or CGI explosions. So that's a big draw-back for me. (LOL.)

The Chief killed him because, he didn't want to see his friend in a mental vegetative state. He was freeing him, by killing him.
