    I peeped you cutting these in the bluetti vid, I just wasn't expecting another vid so fast. Nicely done! Nice clean upgrade (other than the bolts who selflessly gave their lives for the greater good)

    great upgrade, I built My Cnc from your inspiration a couple years ago. I let my fine dust get away, the powder coating oven control box caught it. Well now my machine is toast! Be careful folks! The fine dust is explosive. Link to my fire on my channel. Will feature it. For education anniversary of fire coming up!

    I have been using this linear rail system for years and they are awesome! My cnc machines are enclosed to reduce noise and eliminate the vacuum pickup at the Z axis. Being enclosed and no pickup at the Z axis means lots and lots of air born particles. These linear bearings have no problem dealing with the dust which was a big worry when I went to enclosed. The rails themselves are pretty much indestructible. And the cost of the rails is very low. If you have to replace one of the linear bearings they are also very low cost. I recommend this rail system to everyone.
    I noticed when you were measuring for racking you did not have your stepper motors engaged which would have made a big difference. I recommend next you upgrade to roller bearing screws for your machine. The prices have really come down. This will take out pretty much any end play, improve precision, and when you power down the system the axis is locked, which is an issue with stepper belt drives.
    Thanks for the video! You did a great job on the upgrade.

      Thanks. When the motors have power racking was never an issue that's why I measured it de-energized

    Thank you very much for sharing such an incredible project! Your explanations are so clear and uncluttered that they should serve as a model for other UA-camrs. I may have a solution to the problem of racking of the gantry. To explore the concept (ignoring for a moment the router) if the two pieces of birch holding the new bearings were replaced by a single plank of birch spanning the width of the gantry, the racking would be eliminated-you’d actually have to distort the plank.
    To accommodate the router and laser, some compromise to the width or placement of the plank. If there is space at the far end to allow some overhang, affixing the plank more in that direction could allow the retention of some of its width. Or maybe just the space behind the path the router/laser travels would be enough to add rigidity.
    Just a thought, but it may helpful.

    I saw those in the battery video but didn't mention it in the comments. I built a Joes 06 cnc back in 2007. I recently disposed of most of it... The better 3/4 was unhappy that I did that but I told her that when I built it the cost of ball screws and linear rails was extremely cost prohibitive. Now those parts are readily available and relatively affordable. Not planning to build another router at the moment but maybe a cnc plasma cutter at some point IF I can find somewhere to put it.
    Now If I could get two 40' sections and 2 20' sections that stuff would make for an awesome gantry crane in the shop... My shop has exceeded max capacity and needs an addition of say 50K sqft...
    Looks great overall though the canadian name you give the Z axis and the flipping of X and Y did throw me off. :) When I got my first 3d printer I was introduced to a community that flips X and Y as well which still confuses me even today...

      Good point. I never considered that the gantry receiving the new rails would minimize the flex as well. Their much stiffer than the DIN rails.Could possible add 2 more on the back side for support only. Or maybe just triangular brackets all around the gantry.

    Nice upgrades. That will definitely take you a long way into the future. I do have a question though, , what was the deflection like after putting the linear rails on the gantry? There was a definite improvement after installing them on the bottom, but the rails should have given some more rigidity to the gantry. Keep up the great content.

  • @kevinwillis6707
    @kevinwillis6707 Рік тому

    looks to me that the upstands on your gantry is the weak point for racking, building them as a box structure would increase the stiffness i think.

  • @onjofilms

    I think if I were to do it (and I am shortly) I would put a target on the linear bearing, and a laser on one end and align to the laser down the rail.

  • @carpentersson2884
    @carpentersson2884 Рік тому +1

    You should retest the amount of play you have on the x axis. With the new rails on the Y axis, it might have stiffened up the gantry significantly.

      @@DIYBuilds I was surprised you didn't cut off the bottom of the risers and set it on the board you added to the gantries rather than attaching them to the "end grain" -- but then realized it was so that you didn't have to totally rework the Y axis belts.
