It worth to point out that Frognerseteren is not the only place like this. Oslo is practically surrounded by large wilderness forests easily accessible by public transport. There are prepared cross country ski routes and lakes to swim in summertime.
Around 2009-2010 this metro line was closed for renovations. Me and two friends arrived at Frognerseteren, at the end of a cross country ski trip. We noticed there was fresh, untouched snow on the tracks of the metro, so we knew there was no traffic on the line. We crawled under the fence, and proceeded to ski down the tracks of the metro line past all the stations, on this perfect, gentle incline where we just glided all the way with no effort. It was growing dark, the so called blue hour, so there was a very special mood. We didn’t speak a word to eachother, just skied in silence with some distanse between each of us. When we got down to Skogen station a dog, an irish setter or something, appeared out of nowhere and started running alongside us, we didn’t see the owner anywhere, but it ran beside us for a while and then dissappeared. Around Voksenlia or Holmenkollen we got off the tracks and took the bus downtown. It’s one of the most surreal and special memories I have to this day.
I am stationed near there atm, but I hardly think it is a secret gem. Perhaps for tourists, but most inhabitants know about it. Glad you found it too! :D

Yeah, what makes Oslo special is being surrounded by huge recreational areas, city tram and off you go. I am surprised not more know about the sledding hill Korketrekkern, lots of fun when having a party and go there pretty drunk and be kids again, lol
I have difficulty wrapping my head around how radically different we see the world. When in Oslo, you are awed by the nature in the city. It makes me appreciate what we have here in Norway more. When in Oslo, I am shocked by the urban impact on nature. It makes me despair on how far the urbanization of the rest of the planet has come. It's terrifying. The world would probably be a much better place if everybody had a chance to live in nature the way we do.
You should definitely be thankful for how beautiful Oslo's surrounding nature and Norway in general is. It's such a stunning country, we are so jealous haha! It's our dream to live in Norway one day. We agree 100% about the world being a better place if we all embraced nature more
As a Norwegian who lives in Oslo, sure Frognerseteren is beautiful and a gem, for some. Is it special? No. Because places like this exists all over Norway. Only difference is that this is in Oslo it self, and has become a tourist destination even for locals, totally different from it’s original use and function, but we are surrounded by forest, and nature. So anyone can experience this by just going out far enough in terms of the outdoor experience it self. And originally a Seter/Sæter traditionally is just a smaller holding which belong to a family’s individual farm, used during summer when the cattle, and sometimes goats, horses and sheep are out grazing up in the mountains where Setre was usually built where the farmers could sleep and stay whilst herding the animals, and milk them. Now days it’s more a vacation home, and instead of staying there 24/7, one will commute back and forth between the Seter and the farm to milk. And when the summer is over, the cattle will be taken down from the mountains and onto the fields on the farm itself. I know all this because this is how I grew up during the 90’s and 2000’s as my relatives are farmers (meat and dairy production). Also why I’ve never been to Frognerseteren as it’s not special to me🤷🏾♀️ If I wanna experience a Seter, I go to a real one up in the mountains in central Norway… btw there’s also Grefsenkollen which is the same concept, but closer to down town. A popular hiking destination and one can even take the bus all the way up and there’s a pizza restaurant there now. Greats views over Oslo city. Only reason I’d ever visit Frognerseteren is due to the sledding! That looks hella fun. But winter is over now… great video, and well shot and made😁 And a traditional Seter is way smaller. Only a few tiny houses/annexes, and a barn to keep the cattle at night and also where you milk them. Frognerseteren is great if you don’t have a car or want to drive far to experience nature if living in Oslo. We also have Songsvann where people go cross country skiin in winter, or hiking, and swimming in the summer.

We did a fjord cruise in Bergen which was incredible. But yeah, we cannot wait to come back and spend a much longer time exploring Norway. It’s our favourite 🥰
I'm happy you got a bit lucky and experienced this. You need to be here at the right time of year to experience this. Oslo is surrounded by protected forests on most sides. Great in both summer and winter. In the summer I would also recommend going to the islands just outside Oslo with a ferry or kayaking. There's more hidden gems to be found in Oslo.

Hey, thank you! I’m not too sure, it doesn’t normally snow in Oslo in May, so I’m not sure if the toboggan run will be in use. Might be worth checking the weather forecast ahead of time to see. It’s still a beautiful place at any time of year though, so well worth a visit - and you get great views from the metro ride up 😀
The snow will be almost completely gone in May, i.e. the lower parts will be bare for sure, while there might be some patches of snow in the higher parts. If you are going to Norway in May, you simply have to be here for May 17th, our Constitution Day. There's even a lectern right in front of the Royal Castle which is reserved for non-citizens. 🙂
You was in luck this year. Been cold all over. So dry snow. if the temp goes above 0 a bit. It will be icy Try doing Korktrekkern when its all ice . And you are also smarter than most people. Some people shave.. but you freeze your face off. I think you understand what I say :)

Pretty much every city, village and municipality in Norway is basically just a cut out in the forrest. You're never far from amazing experiences in the Norwegian nature.
Perhaps you already knew, but "Korketrekkeren" means "the Corkscrew". And by the way, the last "e" in both this word and "Frognerseteren" is silent. So, pronounced more or less like i.e. "Frognerset-earn". Or, to be exact, with a Norwegian "æ"-sound. Actually like the "a" in English "fancy"😂

Btw by Norwegian way of measuring it’s not really a mountain. More like a hill. And the forest isn’t exactly thick either. But I understand from a foreigner’s point of view this may be different depending on where you’re from and what you’re used to. Eastern side of Oslo is where the poor ghetto people live. Western side is where all the rich white people live… Wilderness we don’t have much of in Norway. As it means: “untouched by man” which isn’t true. It may look like it’s untouched, but far from it. We hike, ski, hunt and forage… Norway is also a small country with 5,5 million people, and we grew recently due to refugees from Ukraine and the Russian war and invasion on Ukraine.
It is even better when it is sunny and it has newly snowed.... you should come back for that....
