I have a dove that builds a nest over my front door every year. I throw the old one out when they leaves in the summer and she builds a brand new one from scratch in the spring and finishes it in half a day. She just built another one last Wednesday. The thing weighs about 3 pounds with all the spit and mud that she makes. She collects particular twigs and building materials from the parking lot here. Incredible builder. My parents have a cardinal family and a blue jay family that live in their back yard. They also have many humming birds that stop by often. Their back yard is like a botanical garden.

two possible reasons. theyre not build for more than one brood, second, they have parasites after time which will attack the chicks
Maybe they are smarter than we give them credit.
