- Streaming Live: Chicago city council discusses "sanctuary city" status, some push for public vote
There's a special City Council meeting scheduled for Thursday morning.
Some aldermen plan to discuss Chicago's status as a sanctuary city for migrants. Several aldermen are pushing for approval on a referendum for the March primary ballot.
They want voters to decide if Chicago should continue to be a sanctuary city.
The sanctuary status means the city will not ask about immigration status. It also means that status cannot be disclosed to authorities or be the reason someone is denied city services.
Last month there was an attempt to have this special meeting. A confrontation between council members took place outside of the chambers, causing the meeting to eventually be cleared out.
Mayor Brandon Johnson was also out of town when that special meeting was being held last month, and some council members called on him to be present Thursday.
That meeting is set to start at 10 a.m.

If Chicago chooses to remain a sanctuary cities don’t ask other cities to take on your burden. Don’t ask for federal aid. This is taxpayer dollars from non-sanctuary cities too and we don’t want our tax money to fund illegals coming into our country illegally
Sanctuary City means one thing only: city police don't cooperate with ICE. It never means we welcome busloads of people who require resources we don't have. I understand and respect the idea that Chicago can help take the pressure off of border cities and towns but bussing them up to Chicago is not the answer. The city is full and our resources are stretched thin. Send them to other liberal cities, not here

I live 6 hours from Chicago, 6 hours and crime has increased by about 80% in my area since last year. I would hear sirens maybe once a week in my city, now it's 3-4 times a day. I DO not feel safe in my small city anymore and can only imagine it will worsen. I hope in the near future to move out of Illinois, I do not want to raise a family here AT ALL.

I like how most of the speakers were all part of some organization and not citizens of the neighborhoods being affected. We need to hear what the people say not bias people that work for organizations that make money from defending their agenda

Respectfully disagree, lawlessness creates chaos. Sanctuary status support and incentives illegally entering the country.
The aldermen and mayor are afraid of a symbolic vote by the citizens because their decision to follow the party and ignore the people they were elected to represent would be on the record.
Hopefully, the people of Chicago remember the day they were silenced and vote out the responsible aldermen. Then this matter can be taken up by a representative government.
Ofc it is about being sanctuary. Part of the problem is most the electorate, like the commenter before, is not fully capable of a complete and coherent thought.
So from what the first three speakers say is, we recognize it’s against the law to harbor illegal aliens but if we stick together we can ignore federal law as long as democrats are in power. What other federal law do you want to ignore?
So many people are confusing new york's right to shelter as a us asking for it to be a sanctuary city. In 1983 it was passed to house new yorkers under hard times. These laws passed to help were meant for americans in cities and now are being used against us.
