Unnamed option that I use: a personal home server. I have a ton of movies and tv shows saved over 40TB and in one of those HDD's, I have all of my roms backed up on there. As for my gaming PC, i have an nvme boot drive, a 4tb nvme that holds launchbox and the majority of my games. Paid PC games from Steam, Epic etc on two 1tb 2.5 ssds
It also depends on things like what systems you're playing and whether you have multiple internal drives or partitions. SNES and GBA ROMs take up way less space than Playstation onward. If you're a big RPG fan, they're your go-to for small files, big games, and hacks. It's all about strategy - how and where you store 'em that feels right for you.
This is good advice. If I had to add something, you can also build your own external SSD, like I a have an ASUS TUF enclosure which is dust and waterproof. You can also pick A RAID enclosure, I have one running in raid 1, which means you can write data to 2 separate drives at the same time, which is useful if one of them fails.
256 GB flash drive. 25 bucks each so I picked up two. they store my emulators and daily play roms. main drive stores library and cloud to store roms ps1 and sooner cause their size
I have them stored at three places and it is rather large now around 5TB all said. I am glad I bought mine when prices were lower. I got a 5 TB SSD for $90 and a few 1TB to 4 TB NVME's for $39 to $100 each. All total I got 18TB of storage for under $420.
I use a 4tb external hard drive for my whole collection. But I have been slowly burning all of my roms to optical discs as archival storage. Optical discs give you a physical backup that lasts multitudes longer than an HDD or an SSD. Many are graded to last over 100 years! Just store in room temp, away from sunlight. Smaller storage capacity? Actually, I prefer it. Storing collections on multiple discs lessens the risk of losing everything in the event that a single disk gets destroyed.
Mechanical drives last much longer than SSDs. SSDs have a finite amount of writes. It would be pretty damn hard to burn through an SSD used as storage unless it is a cheap brand or old. For me, I have a box of about 20 2TB internal drives, many older than ten years and they are my main backup. I use them with a multi-slot HDD USB 3.1 dock. On my PC, I have two 8TB drives (WD Black), one where ROMs live for emulation, the other mostly for games to put on modded consoles (Wii, GC, XBOX, etc.)
Agreed, that's why I just keep the roms I play daily on a ssd and my use hdd for storage. Another thing to remember is that a hard drive insides will slowly break itself down just from being turned on.
@@UrCasualGamer OG XBOX modded in 2003-2004 with Xecuter 3 chip, 250 GB IDE drive. Still works and occasionally played to this day (TV in make-shift man cave). You can get a hard drive with a large capacity and a hot swap usb dock for the best price. Paid cloud storage is expensive. You need two drives. One for backup.
I think your recommendation makes a ton of sense, and not just for ROMS or other games. Get yourself a big hard drive to use for backups, and treat it like it's fragile. Then you don't need to spend as much money on larger external SSDs for everyday use.
Convenient video. Just an hour ago I was wondering what would be the best way to go about this. I'm looking for more of an all-in-one solution though. I guess that's probably not optimal though.
Unconventional option is a dual layer BD and stored off in a CD jacket. You can go up to 100gb on them but usually locked to 50gb. Where these shine is longevity and the lwck of moving parts. Disc rot becomes a problem in time, but its only 20 or 30 years since the disc based games have started to show these signs of physical age. Saving roms to the cloud as a permanent solution is a terrible idea. I play on multiple devices and I store my save files in the cloud as my go-between. If I want to quickly transfer a rom over, I will also use the cloud. But as a permanent solution, its a terrible idea.
So, I assumed that people did not obtain the roms legally and that they are using commercial (and not personal) cloud systems. Commercial cloud systems could remove any material they deem illegal and remove your roms from their service. This is why I wouldn't consider it useful as a way to store your roms or even use it as a backup. Secondly, if you get beyond N64 and PS1 (my PS1 games are over 60 GB), you will definitely have to pay for enough storage space to store your roms.
I used a usb flash drive to store some of my roms and for the most part it works great. Pcsx2 told me that my game could stutter but I couldn't see anything wrong with it. They're completely fine to use
that flat small usb drive isnt safe. they could easily be lost. lucky im not a modern days games fans. modern games isnt fun and it doesnt make sense. i can play retro games all day long everyday if i wanted
I would NEVER recommend getting an external HDD. Yea, they are more affordable but I had one die on me in less than 4 years and I never dropped it or let anything happen to it.
The average person won't reach 35000 writes in 10 years, the lifespan of an ssd. But that hard-drive well break within 5 or 6 simply because of the spinning disc inside. That's why I say don't leave them plugged in when not in use.
Correct, but if you look at the specs you'd have to write something like 2TB of stuff every day for ten years (or some crazy numbers like that) to wear out the blocks.
Correct, but if you look at the specs you'd have to write something like 2TB of stuff every day for ten years (or some crazy numbers like that) to wear out the blocks.
You're right a hhd really doesn't have a limit. It's the movement of the parts in side over the years that kill the drive. But an Ssd can write up to 35000 times before it's pretty much done for.

I have some backed up on both HHD and SSD external drives, common sense really.
Can I just keep my emulator on my SSD and the Roms on HDD
$100 for 12tb-18tb HDD (3.5")..... and $150 for 2TB SSD.... been working so far!
What brand do you go with for those?
Saving roms to the cloud as a permanent solution is a terrible idea. I play on multiple devices and I store my save files in the cloud as my go-between. If I want to quickly transfer a rom over, I will also use the cloud. But as a permanent solution, its a terrible idea.
Why is it a terrible idea?
So, I assumed that people did not obtain the roms legally and that they are using commercial (and not personal) cloud systems. Commercial cloud systems could remove any material they deem illegal and remove your roms from their service. This is why I wouldn't consider it useful as a way to store your roms or even use it as a backup. Secondly, if you get beyond N64 and PS1 (my PS1 games are over 60 GB), you will definitely have to pay for enough storage space to store your roms.
@@ryancarnes7516 Also, I think that there can be better solutions like your own external hard drives.
Do i backup them in rar or zipped ?
i store mind on External drivers WD 1Tb, and 2Tb and planing on buying a 4TB
What about a micro sd card, I been using that for about two years
I store roms on a floppy drive 😅
Is a usb ok
I used a usb flash drive to store some of my roms and for the most part it works great. Pcsx2 told me that my game could stutter but I couldn't see anything wrong with it. They're completely fine to use
bro how can download games for pcsx2 please tell me
I keep mine on and sd card which i keep in my steam deck oled
plug drive into your router?
that flat small usb drive isnt safe. they could easily be lost. lucky im not a modern days games fans. modern games isnt fun and it doesnt make sense. i can play retro games all day long everyday if i wanted
Anyone using the cloud option? Is it any good? 15GB for google drive is great for my current collection of roms. What do you guys think?
Good enough if you really don't need much space. Once you're saving PS3 games 15GB is like 1 or 2 games tops.
@@omegamac10 do younprefer google drive or dropbox?
@@JQuitoriano no I use the computer's built in hard drive but this video is making me reconsider and maybe get that first thing.
I would NEVER recommend getting an external HDD. Yea, they are more affordable but I had one die on me in less than 4 years and I never dropped it or let anything happen to it.
On every drive i have
they say ssd has low life spand than hdd. because of read and write limitation.
The average person won't reach 35000 writes in 10 years, the lifespan of an ssd. But that hard-drive well break within 5 or 6 simply because of the spinning disc inside. That's why I say don't leave them plugged in when not in use.
I got 20tb hard drive put roms on
I thought SSDs had a limited # of reads and writes and HDDs didn't... I guess I was wrong? Hmmm... 🤔

100gb mdiscs? 🤔
Does anyone know a good site to download Ocarina of time so far I haven’t found any that work on lime
Yes
@@afistfulofpimples1745 mind sharing it then please
@@afistfulofpimples1745 then tell me tell me damn youuuuuu pls 🥲

Call me boomer but external HDD is better.
