Measuring an amp's output power

  • You can measure how many watts an amp puts out using just a multi-meter and a resistor! Here's how! Works for both solid state and tube amps. Just make sure to get the impedance right and don't run a tube amp with no speaker (or let a solid state amp short straight out!)

    what kind of resistor shall i use for testing an amp that is supposed to have 1100 watt at 8 ohm channel ?

    Your meter is giving correct results (reading in RMS) as a square wave has more power than a sine wave at the same voltage... .70.7% vs 100% your 27 watts RMS sine wave is pushing about 38 watts square wave RMS (27x1.414) or as your meter said 12.3^2/4. Running square wave is like running D.C. Power soak resister should be heatsinked as they increase their resistance with heat and those suckers can can blistering hot during high power lengthy tests and throw your results way off and there are free oscilloscope apps for phones and PC's that work fine for audio freqs.
