- World War II is inarguably one of the darkest periods of human history. It can be difficult to wrap your head around the sheer number of lives lost, families separated, and cities decimated. From the ashes of destruction rise heroes - some recognized, and others deserving of recognition they never receive. Freddie Oversteegen is one of those overlooked heroes from unknown WWII stories. Once you learn about her life, you'll never forget her, and you'll also wonder why no one has made a movie about this incredible woman.

Sooo much respect for all of them, but Hannie? I mean, wow. Tortured and beaten, but still didn't talk. About to be gunned down, soldier misses, and she throws it back at him by letting him know that she was a better shot than he was. A woman who refused to live life on her knees til the very end and never gave the Germans the satisfaction. That's a warrior right there.
Her famous last words where never spoken. She was shot two times in the head and never gun downed bij a machinegun. Furthermore, do you think that her executioners would give her the honor of so much bravery? But still a remarkable person.
the death of the sisters' dear friend Hannie really brought tears to my eyes. Up until her last moment, she still didn't give the Germans info they wanted. I can imagine the three would have still be together and celebrated so many milestones in their lives after the war. She's taken way too soon 😭can't deny though she's also a badass with that last words to her executioner

These young women were simply amazing. I’m shocked that they survived the war with all the kills they had committed. You don’t usually hear men talk about how they feel about having killed a war enemy. It was very open of the sisters to say that the war was always on their minds even 50-70 years later. Mental health wasn’t really “a thing” back then, so they were left trying to cope with PTSD on their own. It looks like they pulled it together better than most people would have. And I’m glad they had each other during their extraordinarily longs lives.

The same soldiers who gunned down the children that were caught in the fields, who pulled families apart for being Jewish and hung anyone despite their age for assisting these families. Even though I am 1/4 Dutch, hearing stories of the Dutch resistance and unsung heroes gives a great deal of pride.
Not exactly weird history as it's noble history but, would you be able to cover Queen Wilhelmina, her escape and exile during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. My Oma told me stories about her and how inspiring the Queen was and I'm interested in learning more
Netherlands is weird because of the public display of resistance while also shipping back Jews because they didn't want them either meanwhile places like Poland get flack for their geographical position while technically helping more people.
@@wombat4583 I'm currently watching some lectures about the 2nd World War and the How's and Why's it happened. There was ample warning and red flags to stop Hitler before he invaded Poland, but no one wanted to do anything. Or rather they didn't want to put too much effort into it, given how many men died in the first world war, a whole generation and Britian and France were trying to avoid a repeat. It's absolutely mind boggling how much Hitler got away with before everyone realized it was too late.
The Jews in German saw the warning signs and tried to flee. But be aware the 30s were also the Great Depression: everyone was trying to find work, everyone was trying to feed their families, and no one wanted to risk what little they had for the Jews, terrible as it sounds. Not everyone in the Netherlands turned Jews away or sent them back. My great-grandfather, Jan Kanis, hid Jewish families in his duplex home. He worked at the post office and noticed numerous death letters marked as Pnemonea. He knew what was happening and I'm certain other Dutch citizens did what they could.
As proud as I am of my Dutch blood, I am also sad and frustrated at how shafted the Polish were. They were better pilots than the RAF, they made the prototype that would break the enigma machine and German code, they had Wojtek the 🐻; I can't praise the Polish people enough and if I had been there in that time I would be making a fuss about the Poles getting the credit they deserve.

I’m glad that the Dutch resistance in WO2 are mentioned. What a lot of people don’t know is that the resistance in the Netherlands against the nazis where quit big, even my great grandfather helped some men finding work in his business or they were sent to Germany to work in the factories. He basically saved there lives. He also smuggled bicycles and food in ‘de honger winter’. But it is just sad that a lot of people don’t remember them even if it was a small act they risked they lives for our freedom.

There's a story of an English Earl who lived an adventurous life and evacuated scientists from around Europe, mostly French scientists, whose work would have resulted in the Nazis creating the nuclear bomb first. Also, major spotlight on the Polish. They got shafted quite a bit during WW2.

Arthur Seyss Inquart was the Austrian Nazi that the Germans put in charge of NL, was run differently to the occupied parts of France and other countries, as the Nazis were hoping to get the Dutch on side with them. Fairly certain that they shot Inquart after the war.

One of the sadder aspects of stories like this is how many women in the Resistance were brutally punished by their townsfolk as "collaborators" after the war, often having their heads shaved and paraded before the people as they smacked them around and hurled insults.
Really?! That's horrible!
The female collaborators were comparatively lucky, the men were tortured to death (yes, I understand that these specific women weren't collaborators, but if female resistance fighters mistakenly had their heads shaved, it's much worse for the male resistance members that cosied up to the Germans as spies).
This is one of those situations where people acted like wild mobs, it's an unfortunately reality of humanity that people and pent up rage do not go well with each other.

Not as of yet, there has been talks about it for a few decades, but current Hollywood is trying to end WWII movies due to ever changing obscure reasons. Personally, I see it would be a fantastic film / educational piece. A small average family that mastered espionage, assassinations and rescues. While still holding onto their humanity but as well equally continued to do said tasks must have been daunting on their mind and emotions while their world literally burned down around them - and still continued to help others survive.
Nope, because instead of promoting stories about real heroines of the war they have to insert fake female characters with steampunk arms and have them take away the achievements of real people.
Seriously though, I doubt this would ever become a thing, modern agendas don't like the idea of telling stories about women who use 'feminine wiles' (or women who use sex as a weapon) to achieve their objectives.

I love that these resistance residents were real and those 3 specific women were extraordinarily extra special! It's so sad their friend was taken right at the end and not getting the ability to be with her loved ones after the war... They are amazing people and I'm not embarrassed to admit I have a huge crush on them just as people in general. They're so badass & facinating.

I’ve read about these kinds of incidents before, additionally the German soldiers would be attracted to a woman and want to talk to her. A disposable very inexpensive gun was used to usually shoot him. The next thing was the resistance now had a rifle and ammunition. Now they can be shot at longer range. Remember the Germans had all the armament and all the technology. This type of thing will work today if necessary in various countries including ours. People have no idea how vulnerable a situation can be.

I’ve disposed of all of my machine shop equipment, but I know lots of people in the business and I can assure you making something that is extremely accurate commonly called a firearm is not very hard. From military perspective, killing soldiers while under the disguise of civilian is strictly forbidden under The Hague Convention and Geneva Convention. Had they tried the same way to kill American soldiers, they will face death penalty rather than being treated as legitimate POW.

I worked with a friend who spent her young womanhood in occupied Paris. She told me how her neighbors would disappear never to be seen again. She came to America as a war bride. She's gone now and I miss her.

If you watch this video, you should also read a book entitled, "The Hiding Place," by a woman by the name of Corrie tenBoom, who's family also was in Haarlem, Netherlands, and the resistance they led covertly. Very powerful stuff.
I've read her book and Ms. ten Boom's is a good read. The ending is wonderful.

The two sisters are commendable in the fact they helped harbor jews and save their lives from the nazis and the concentration camps. However this does not mean they should not be overlooked for committing acts of terrorism against their own people. The video literally says they killed Dutch collaborators but how many of them were actually collaborators? Also the tales of their missions and exploits seem heavily propagandized to give them more credit than they are actually warranted as is often the case with communists.
Also, from military law perspective, the way they killed German soldiers under the disguise of civilians was a war crime , in black and white, on the book, specifically, the Hague Convention and the Geneva Convention. Had they did the same on U.S. soldiers, it would have been certain death sentence by military tribunal.
Also, I was taught in officer school that whenever you treat enemies in a questionable way (specially POW), think about its consequences. In this case, the way the sisters killed German soldiers was very likely be responded with more round-ups, deportations, and killings on innocent civilians.
