I use the Horseman 6x12. For easy and accurate composition I have cut a 6x12 viewing window out of black foam, which slots in front of the focussing screen.
nico, the linhof did have a 6x9 format, called the "baby", it was a 6.5x9 though, and today, you would need to have a film cut to this size, as the linhof was like the 4x5 in that it shot sheet film.
There are some small companies like Malefic that print cameras from lightweight materials, these are designed for two formats, for example 6 X 9 and 6 X 12 cm (the latter is actually 6 X 11cm), with helical focussing and a separate viewfinder. The customer provides the lens, for instance a Schneider 90 mm.
nico there is one other make of these backs, SINAR, they have 6x6, 6x7, 6x9 & 6x12, However they also offer a zoom back (called a 'vario' 6x4.5 > 6x12) this has a special plate which has movable bars to deliniate the formats, whatever you select, this focus aid can be set to, and is a "there and back again" style, so NO need to use grafflock system, BUT you do need the separate 'mask' plate, to affix to the ground glass for focussing. one warning too, this Vario has some interlock pins, one to lock the format masks (these act as a darkslide), while Not on the camera, and also a set of two to lock the back onto the format frame when the masks are open, These pins have holes in the sinar F, P and C models for this purpose!, but the instructions give a drilling template for these holes, to retro-fit this back. ( and unlike most multi-format backs, mamiya press for eg, the sinar can change MID ROLL, if you follow the instructions carefully (some changes do give gaps in-between frames!)).
I use a Chroma Snapshot that I've paired with a 90mm lens and a Wista 6x9 rollfilm back, largely because I have a vintage Kodak folder that is 90mm + 6x9. The Kodak folder is too fragile for day to day use.
Film flatness is going to make quite a difference between these options. There are not that many resources online for 6x12 but some on 6x7. If a brand doesn’t do well in that field for 6x7, there is a good chance it will be worse at 6x12.
Hi Nico, Im learning on an old Crown Graphic I picked up earlier this year with some 4x5 film holders. I also grabbed a 6x12 Shen Hao back coming in later this week. While i am enjoying the Crown, i am eventually going to save up and purchase the Chamonix 45-1 classic. My question is ; does the Chamonix come with the Graflok holder built in(I am going to assume yes). Id like to see a video of this camera or one of the other Chamonix cameras being used with a roll film back. Keep up the great work on the channel. thank you. Kenneth
The Horseman 6x12 and 6x9 backs cost a little more but they are worth every penny because of build quality. I love mine for the 4x5s I have with Graglok/universal backs. I only wish Horseman had made a 6x17 version for the 5x7. There is a Chinese made roll film back for the 5x7 but I have not heard of any first-hand experiences from owners of those.
i have a 4x5 shen hao and their offering of a 6x17 roll film back ($900.00 new) works fine with a150mm lens, comes with spacers to do 6x12 and 6x9. also this will work on many 4x5 cameras
I'm shooting my Horseman 6x12 back on my 4x5. Mostly landscape and now recently wildlife. My Wista 6x9 has spacing issues and am not sure how to fix that. Any ideas Nico?

Thats a nice solution. Keeps the distractions away.

I just got a Chroma Snapshot that I am going to pair it with a 65mm lens and my Widepan 6x12 back. I love the format.
I think the Widepan is a rebranded Horseman.

@@arsmale1 I have a GW690 and a GSW690. It'll be interesting if this supplants that.
I also have 6x9 and 6x7 Wista backs!
@@bnrynlds I'd love a gw690 but cost is a major factor. I do have a chroma 679 that I use with a 6x7 mamiya back, mostly for 35mm panoramas.
@@arsmale1 My GW690 was my 'return to film' camera and cost about a third of what it's 'worth' now.
The Cambo Backs are amazing! Especially the newer versions. They also slide under the ground glass.
I hear they are, but for the film loading.

Years back I bought a Chinese back. Built like a tank and pulled the camera backwards. I miss it
With the Sinar Zoom and Sinar Zoom2 you *can* change format mid-roll. There's a Sinar Vario Back which doesn't allow for mid-roll change.
Steve Lloyd of Chroma Cameras has one coming, I think.
He is working on one.

I have the Da Yi 5x7 back and it is very well built. You have to use the red window to advance but apart from that it is as good as any other.
@@bnrynlds thanks for the input. I may put that on my Chistmas list.
Great info, thanks!
Oye ... el San Fermin tambien paga en Finlandia?
General question … if you want to shoot 6*17 you would need a 5*7 body , is that right ? Does anyone know?

check out tony santo's for other film back options
I am working on one protype hahaaa :D
