The nature of authoritarian backlash in the form of surges of authoritarianism is the reaction to the liberalization in some regions and the world. Liberalization leads to the growth of wealth for all strata of the population, which means that the masses of the subordinate class also accumulate power and are ready to exercise it or have already slowly begun to do it. The ruling class either tries to prevent the accumulation of power among the obeying class or, which is more reliable and allows more control, seeks to imitate legal equality and head the processes of accumulation and realization of political power through populism (populism is an intrinsic element of democracy). On the other hand, the growth of prosperity due to liberalization provokes a demand inside the ruling class to appropriate wealth and power surplus by any means, including authoritarian practices. The desire to seize the emerging volumes of power and wealth leads to a local rise of authoritarianism, which may turn into a chronic, irreversible, consistent dominance of authoritarianism. Moreover, the ruling class cannot abstain from controlling power since controlling and preserving political power is its main praxeological goal. Thus, we are doomed to observe some outbursts of authoritarianism as a cost for too rapid liberalization.
