Subaru Legacy JDM Headlight Conversion Facelift Rev D-F

- I'm starting off my JDM Legacy Spec B Rev D-F conversion by converting the JDM headlights to USDM. THIS IS A LONG VIDEO! But this is also probably the most thorough video you'll find on how to do this. I go into a lot of detail, particularly about the signals, so if you don't need to see a particular part just skip it. This video also works for if you're doing a Rev A-C headlight conversion, ie; you have an 05-07 Legacy and bought some JDM headlights you're swapping onto your car without doing anything else. All of the wiring, shield flip, and signal stuff will be the same except the DRLs will look different. PS: these 3157 adapters have bad quality control. If you're having problems test the connectivity with a multimeter to see if you made a wiring mistake or if it's the adapter. I ended up cutting out the adapter all together and splicing the wires into the car harness since I won't be changing this car back. It worked flawlessly.

looking for more info on how you wired the switch backs to the proper coresponding wires
Great video! Very helpful
@rpgarage, I bought everything I follow every step, but I ran into many issues. The parking light started flickering, the taillights didn’t turn on, the switchback are flashing white not yellow. And for the signal you didn’t provide information about which color connects with each other.
You wired your turn signals wrong and blew or about to blow a fuse. Sometimes the wiring adapters are bad and so even if you wire everything right that's the problem. Test them with a multimeter to make sure
@@RPGarage ohhh thanks 🙏🏿
No problem. For what it's worth I had the same problem and ended up just leaving out the adapters and splicing the turn signal socket right onto the car's harness then everything worked perfectly. The quality control on the adapters is bad
@@RPGarage I believe the fuse for parking light is blow, but I’m not sure. I’m testing power I received no power for parking light. I can’t find the fuse for it. So how can I fix that. ( do I just take the signal adapters out?)
@@SaintsVillage I can't remember which fuse it is that blows but once you replace the fuse everything works fine again. Skip the adapters and solder/crimp the socket right onto the car harness after your replace the fuse and it will work fine. Just means you have to cut and splice again if you ever want to put the old headlights back
For the JDM version, is the DRL light the same as front parking lights for this car? And are they W5W bulbs?
Hey there, trying to do something similar on my legacy but am having troubles with the DTR. Do you have a picture of how you wired it or can you explain what you mean by installing a switchback/wiring it to the battery off the accessory?
Hey sorry for the late reply I didn't see your comment earlier. For the daytime running lights the way I'm doing it temporarily is running a wire into the cabin from an accessory fuse tap for the postive and grounding it as normal. That way whenever power is turned on, the lights turn on. Similar to what you'd do for a dashcam. In a few days I'm going to change that though and set up a power distribution block that it will run off of permanently along with my dashcam, LED lights, whatever extra powered accessories I want to hook up etc. I'll upload a video on how to do that. It's simple and is very convenient for adding accessories later on
Do you also need a jdm hood or will usdm fit with the jdm fenders and bumper?
JDM hood is not required, mine is USDM and fit is perfect.
I have a 2008 legacy 3.0r and I'm looking into swapping my stock headlights to JDM headlights. Are they the same size?
Hey man do you have any other form of contact, fb or the forums maybe? Im having some issues with the running lights. got the bulbs you reccomended, but they are both still super dim. Thinking some sort of grounding issue, wanted to see what you did for the harness for them
Sure you can msg me on Instagram under rp_garage_ if you want to add a pic or something or just ask on here. Just off the top of my head though if your lights are dim either something is wrong with your bulb, your power supply, your lens or your reflector. If you got those same bulbs then you know when you apply power to the bare bulb itself they're very bright. If applying power directly to the bulb is the same as when the bulb is in the headlight housing, the power source is fine. That leaves the question are your lenses super foggy or the most likely candidate, did you black out the DRL reflectors with the rest of the headlight??
I have a problem.
I installed some switchbacks like you did and wired the adapter up correctly. Whenever I use the turn signal, I blow the fuse. What did I do wrong?
Test the adapter by applying power to the wires directly and make sure the power is going where it's supposed to. When I first used those adapters the wiring wasn't doing what it was supposed to. Fault of the adapter not your wiring potentially!
@@RPGarage I did that today and got the correct wires. I think the problem could be the 3157 adapter. I ordered a 3157 female adapter to test the light without constantly blowing fuses
where can I find your write up for this on the lgt forums
I'm curious why you cut the jdm high beam connector off when it's the same on the usdm harness. Also mine has yellow and white Into the housing with the red and black. Did you use that or what?
Yea instead of cutting you can change pins
Not sure if you'd mentioned it, but for the turn signal adapters you have blue/red/black then green/white/red how did you translate those over? Thank you
So aside from the wiring if I have a set of these and a facelifted 08 usdm, I'm understanding I still need some of the front clip? Forums were leading me to believe this is the case still? If so what specific parts of the front clip? Also I have a spare set of the usdm so I could potentially swap inner components, specifically the drl, side area into the usdm housing if possible.
You can't install JDM headlights onto a USDM bumper due to the shape. You need JDM fenders, bumper, headlight brackets, bumper bar. Pre-facelift JDM headlights will work on pre-facelift USDM cars with just the wiring done as they are the same shape.
@@RPGarage Were you able to look at my wiring question? Im sorry if its something I'm missing
@@RPGarage I am also in need of a wiring explanation am very confused
i have the same question
Do you know the number o size of low beam for 2008-09 JDM headlights?
Thanks 🙏
D2s HID bulb
great write up. Looking to do this conversion on my usdm 09 gt. What about the headlight brackets and fenders? Do those need to be from a jdm donor vehicle as well? TIA
Yes you need everything. Fenders, bumper, headlight brackets, bumper beam etc. I'm painting my fenders and bumper at the moment but probably by this weekend or next week I'll be making a video where I swap the front end on. You'll be able to see it all there. I'm self-isolating so I have time ;)
thank you for the quick reply, I should of been more clear though. I dont want to run a jdm bumper. only the headlights with usdm bumper. just not sure if the fenders are required for that as well. I made a comment on the legacy gt forums asking the same thing
@@JordanTaylorVlogs yeah unfortunately the shape of the headlights mean you need fenders and the shape of the fenders means you need the bumper. There's no way I've seen too run the headlights without the whole front end. You can, however, cut the jdm bumper to run with usdm headlights and fenders (opposite of what you want)
@@RyansGadgetGarage- got it thank you. well that stinks, they look so similar to the 08/09 usdm
@@RyansGadgetGarage- I ended up buying a complete faceligt nose cut. looking forward to the conversion
you never followed up on your headlights.. did you mess up? I wired my JDM headlights for my 08 specB differently than you and want to see the difference

@@RPGarage Looks great.. thanks!
Do I need to flip the shield on both Left & Right headlights?
@@jmj5150 no problem, I also just blacked them out last weekend and posted that video if you're interested in that look
@@RPGarage Thanks.. do you need to flip shields on both left and right headlights?
what exact bulb did u use for the running lights?
It was these ones:
amzn.to/3lJzOIl
thank you! I wasnt happy with how dim mine were compared to yours, one of the main reasons I got the jdm lights lol
Hey! Where in Ontario are you? Would love to have you in the legacy group!
Hey thanks I'm from Ontario but unfortunately I'm currently in Saskatchewan.
@@RPGarage ah that's too bad! I love your videos though! Keep it up! I have an 05 LGT Wagon myself but mine is Atlantic Blue! So you have been quite the help with some ideas and things I have to get done!
Hey you never said or showed how to wire the motors, could you at least explain it?
Haven't done it yet, not really a priority. Basically you just connect the wires from the motor to the wires on the switch and everything will work as far as I know. You need the JDM leveling switch to connect it to though
@@RPGarage are you sure if this will work? HID shoud have auto adjust, instead of manual adjust from inside knob
