Shizuka heads to Minato City in Tokyo to check out a yokocho of a different kind. Yokocho, meaning “alleyway” or “side street”, are a network of narrow alleyways lined with various eateries and bars. Yokocho are a fascinating part of Japan’s urban dining culture, but today, we’re checking out a new interpretation of this timely social dining concept: a sky-high themed indoor yokocho!
Shizuka makes her way up to the 38th floor of the Shinagawa Prince Hotel in Minato City (Tokyo) to Ajikaido Gojusantsug: a high-end indoor yokocho where the restaurants are named after the 53 stations (or rest areas) along the Tokaido Road, which connected Kyoto to Edo (otherwise known as modern Tokyo).
First stop on our indoor yokocho journey, Sanjo-a teppanyaki restaurant serving Japanese wagyu beef. Shizuka sits and indulges in a luxurious course meal starring pancakes with caviar, Japanese black beef sirloin, and more. Next stop on our Tokaido-themed yokocho pilgrimage is Odawara, where Shizuka savors fresh seafood and vegetable tempura. Full but with room for more, Shizuka walks to her final stop, Nihonbashi-a premium sushi restaurant with a breathtaking view of the Tokyo skyline. The chef prepares fresh sushi using the finest local seafood, ensuring our host ends the journey on a delectable high.

As a half Japanese that looks Japanese, there is a constant struggle to meet peoples expectation when they talk to me like a native Japanese. I can speak Japanese, and some times have no accent, but my Japanese language capability is probably at elementary school level. It's a tough spot to be in as I look Japanese, can speak Japanese to a degree, but just have problem expressing myself fully. So there is this frustration with not knowing how to respond in certain situation. Life would be easier if I just didn't speak Japanese at all and didn't look Japanese at the same time. At any rate, I'm proud of anyone leaning in to this struggle on youtube and elsewhere.
Often, half Japanese can look very Japanese to foreigners but are easily identifiable as half to locals, even just because of body language or facial expression. Do you think you're usually viewed as fully Japanese by locals?
@@yuyutubee8435 yes because I’m half Japanese but 100% Asian.
@@Omikoshi78 It's kind of the opposite of the "nihongo jouzu" problem that western looking people run into when they speak Japanese. I'm not Japanese but East Asian and ran into similar issues when I visited earlier this year where people just naturally assumed I was fluent and were shocked when I wasn't 😅
I just want to say how underrated your videos and channels are! they informative, great presentation, and love how Shizuka is so into her food / travels. Keep it up 😊 Definitely going to visit next time I come to Tokyo!
Thank you again for taking us on this journey with you enjoyed it .
Thank you for coming along!
If one had replicate the journey from Kyoto to Tokyo by eating a full meal at every representation of each station, then it is by no means an easy journey.
Very true indeed!
When I saw the shrimp legs, I remembered the grasshoppers dishes? :))
Once more… excellent video. Keyword: Fancy 😁
You have the best job! Thank you for giving us the opportunity to explore Japan and its cuisine with you.
Oh Shizuka, I was so envious of you eating the delicious food! Those meals absolutely looked mouth watering. Can't wait to watch your next video Shizuka! Matane!

We were there last February. Love the view and selection of quality food. 🙌
Woow! that is cool! Glad you got to experience it too!
Ha, ha! Shizuka in the Yokochos is so maneuverable! These are the areas I would really like to dine in as they are small and have some "cuisine" like chefs. I mean, you keep on finding out of all these different types of sushi's that are worth trying! Than you Japan By Food team! Thank you Shizuka for the tasty meals!
We want to discover all the sushi there is!
You take so many cool journeys! Keep being awesome
We will keep doing our best!

3 Master Chef's within yards of each other?
Fantastic!
Lucky Lady!
These are the kind of places I would live to experience but may be too intimated to make that first step. Happy that this service exists to open the door
Yes yes yes! Yokocho is right up my alley....see what I did there? Sorry. But really I absolutely love hitting multiple spots on a street to eat at for an outing. Yum! The Tokaido Road theme is a great way to do it, too. Going on the list. That scallop tempura made me salivate!
I loved watching your video love japan food ❤beautiful lady
Glad you enjoyed!
that sfx lol 7:36
Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
She's a pro drinker haha❤
Broke character for a second when tasting the Tsukudani at 3:05.😂 Has to be delicious.
Really enjoyed this episode Shiz. You’re such a fabulous and informative guide👍
Domo, Shizuka-san!
Watching this from my room while eating my Family Mart fried chicken. For some reason my chicken seems low quality haha.
Beautiful.
Ms. Shizuka is Japan Ambassador.
Nice job Ms Anderson🩵🎌.
Thank you kindly
The food looked so amazing. But where is the producer? Would love to have seen Shizuka san and producer fine dining at a high end restaurant.
Whisper ally i okinaw😂😂
Japan by Food where can you get Maneki Neko blue curtain at 0:55-59 timeframe?

You are so eleget
Hello beautiful wow I love your videos 📹 I want m to go Japan one dayexperience the culture & food great job 👍 🇯🇵
We hope you visit one day!
❤️ 🇯🇵 😊
👍
Was the Hokkaido Bafun uni caption a typo? Could someone please explain why it read “Hokkaido’s horse manure sea urchin”?
That is what it means:P This sea urchin is called horse manure sea urchin because it is rather large in size. Strange name indeed!
i didnt even know these places existed
Now you know!
🎉🎉👌👌
Kind of "high class!" Beautiful but certainly not the same ambience. Waikiki has a new yokocho (replaces one that closed due to COVID) and tries to keep the closeness of traditional ones but probably has to adhere to fire codes.
Oh that is interesting! We did not know yokochos were a thing abroad!
@@JapanbyFood Well, we get a lot of Japanese tourists, though not as much as before COVID, and about 30% of the local population is also ethnically Japanese. And Hawaii people in general love Japanese food.
This time, I'm thrilled to announce that I occupied the esteemed position of "thumbs up" number 944, as per Sarah Scoop, the angel number 944 signifies success, financial stability, and abundance in all aspects of life - just what I'm looking for! 😄 I truly relished this episode! 😁😉
Dam this channel blowing up
Hopefully!
is there Japanese made wines, whisky or brandy? how do they measure up to the competition?
I used to do a ton of scotch tastings at parties my old boss hosted. I actually found the japanese offerings were my second favourite after one specific region of scotland (i believe it was speyside. i have not kept up with the hobby since moving).
Japanese whisky tends to be a blend of whiskies purchased from Europe and/or sometimes North America and they often do include some scotch. Like any whisky from anywhere, I've found them to be hit or miss. I'd imagine their brandies are similar.
Hot spring with dining pls
Coming very soon!
Is it unusual no one else is in the restaurant? You guys have the whole place reserved?
All reserved for us:P
@@JapanbyFood That's AMAZING! And a special privilege too as an honored guest!
🎉
What are the prices?
You can check here: www.byfood.com/restaurant/ajikaido-gojusantsugi-2046
Why are the restaurants so empty?
They likely opened the restaurants early for Japan by Food, or temporarily closed the three restaurants to the public that Shizuka went to. Keeps noise down and allows the chefs to focus on her.
You got it right;)
🇧🇩🖤 🇯🇵
at 9:50 I see, vhef has personal toilet!
Does Shizuka do like the ancient Romans who after they finished eating would stick a finger down their throats to regurgitate their meals and start all over again? Because otherwise how does she find room in her little tummy for all the food she eats while maintaining that perfect physique?
I understand the Japanese Govt is spending alot of $$$ to promote Japanese Goods after the Fukushima dumping of "treated water". What is the regular people's reaction, are they staying away from certain products?/
M gonna marry you! ! ❤💋
i hope those costs as cheap as their sizes
Can I have your job?
We all want it:D
I feel like 99% of the subscribers here are males lol
You're cute but I'd like to see the real you behind the scenes. Let your hair down and just be yourself. If others don't like you that's Okay also.
i think that defeats the purpose of yokocho, this "luxury" version looks boring. rather interact with locals
