Tunnels renders GPS useless. :) Temperatures outside at every point? Not very accurate... and would require equipment for that as well.. which mean more stuff to place. We have 2 - 3 minutes to do a crew change, so there is just no time.

I know you have lots of things to watch out for and several controls to utilize and monitors to watch, but do you ever find it boring when you are required to drive at reduced speeds for such a long period? I realize the grade of the tracks is one reason for reduced speed. It certainly got dark quick during the latter part of the trip.

The first view of the snowy mountain upon emerging from the Skiple tunnel is stunning! And then seeing the delicate last light on the mountain tops as everything goes to blue - wow! And the stark, rugged beauty of emerging from the Kjosfossen tunnel. And what a lovely approach down into Flåm in the dark. I spotted the heart of lights off to the left. :) I also noticed, as you get closer to Myrdal, people are out skiing here and there. I guess that's why there are so many request stops - people are heading up to their cabins for the holidays? And coming down from Myrdal, you are making stops to let people off. Did they come on the train with you from Voss, then switch over to get to their cabins?
Kinda neat to see the names of all the tunnels. I was a little surprised to see that someone took the time to name those very short tunnels. Was there any criteria to coming up with the names?
Most places in Norway have names already, we've lived here a very long time. We don't need to invent new names. The tunnels are named after their location or nearby feature. For example, the Kjosfoss tunnel is near Kjosfossen station (literally "the Kjos waterfall"). The word kjos comes from Old Norse kjóss and means small bay. The tunnel is therefore Small-bay-waterfall-tunnel.
I'm not sure if you are allowed to tell me this and if not, I understand ... but do you announce the stations to the passengers or is it an automated message that announces them. In Ontario, Canada, it's the Via Rail Service Manager who announces each station. Just curious as I could hear them in the background.
Well, this explains the high life expectancy in Norway: the extra time it takes for a train to come to Flam at 20 (max 30) km/h or 12 (max 19) miles/h. I have seen cars going faster than that in reverse (JUST KIDDING!). The scenery is awesome and is best enjoyed at a low speed of travel. No harm done.
A very nice video. I found it interesting that you took a Flirt from Voss to Myrdal, parked it, then transferred to the Flan shuttle which looked like 1 or 2 coaches bracketed by locomotives. Also parked in Flan was a cut of coaches with a locomotive at the end of track. Was that some of the cars normally used in the Oslo to Bergan service stored there? I do hope that @RailCowGirl you had a great holiday and that 2021 will be a wonderful year for you.
I have noticed that on the speed boards there will sometimes be an 80 board with a +10 underneath making the max speed 90. Why not just put a 90 board? Love your videos btw.
Because the +10 is for trains that are allowed (technically) to run overspeed. Freight trains and the Night Train with the sleepers are not approved for overspeed. :)
Winter has arrived, yay! I'm intrigued by all those ultra-short platforms at the stops on request. Do you have selective door control or could passengers in theory jump off where there is no platform? At 1:16:34, some work crew abandoned their equipment...
question: what is the purpose of connecting the loco to external power at the end? Does the pantograph not maintain contact with the overhead wire during the night?

Joel, my understanding is that if somebody aboard the train wants a stop-on-request, they tell the conductor, who tells RCG. At the station, just stand on the platform and RCG will stop.
@@servantofmelian9966 The FLIRT trains I rode in other countries all had door knobs that can be pushed before the train stops & register the intent to open the door, so no conductor action was needed. I wonder if something similar was also installed on the EL18 + B3 carriages on the Flåm railway, or is it still via the conductor as you described. In this video, I think RCG slowed down before each stop on request so it's based on visual recognition, but you could automate this - I think I saw this somewhere in Switzerland, where the waiting passenger could push a button to turn a signal red.
Most of the stops are mandatory, and if not, the passenger will have to tell the conductor at what stop they are getting off, and the conductor tells the driver. The good old fashioned way of communication ;)
I love these rail videos from Scandinavia but always wonder what the occupations of the people who live in these beautiful lands are. Is there enough workable land for agriculture to be viable, or forestry? Its like much of my home in Maine, USA. Wonderful place to be if you have enough to retire. But to scratch out a living is hard going.

Here in Norway we’re called Lokomotivfører, same as in Germany. Lokomotiv = locomotive. Fører = leader/driver/conductor. What we’re called differes from where in the world you are. Why train driver? Because it’s it’s the most common name elsewhere in the world.

those signs indicate the gradient in meters of rise/drop per kilometer... e.g. 28 = 28 m/km or 2.8%

How do you know that a traverser will get off at the next station? Thanks for your answer and your video with the nice landscape under the snow.
