    The fact that Jim mentioned how much he enjoyed your other video of Tom is just great proof of how well your channel has grown. For a craftsman like him to actually enjoy and subscribe to your content is such a wonderful achievement. Also, well, this episode was just gold!

    This is a wonderful video. Thank you, Kirby. It made me recall years ago as an apprentice Shipbroker in the City of London. I am 68 years old ex-pat now and living in New York. I was about 20 years old, starting a new job, and in need of a new suit and a pair of shoes. So together with my Dad, we purchased the suit. He said Churches are a good pair of shoes so we went to the London store and my first pair of business shoes became a pair of Churches. OMG, they were horrible to 'wear in' due to their construction but soon became very comfortable shoes. I had no idea how to look after them and forget shoe trees! So, they were rather abused. Today, I have a collection of fine handmade shoes that are treated regularly to your polish products. I have to thank you for my own education and your first-class guidance. I simply don't have the money for purely bespoke shoes but there are a lot of very well-made shoes available. Fortunately, I have been blessed with the perfect size 13D feet which is always available from some of the best handmade shoemakers. Thanks again! Peter

    This is a GEM of a discussion. Kirby, possibly your best content yet- and that is saying a lot: informative, entertaining, including the tidbits that, “You won’t find this in a book.” Thank you!

      It was an odd chair to say the least... luckily, I wasn't impaled during the filming of this video! Since we film on-location in London, we are always at the mercy of what is available where we film...

    Seems like Lobb is to shoemaking what Beethoven is to pianists; someone studied with someone who studied with Liszt who studied with Czerny who studied with Beethoven.

    When I hit my late 40’s I came to understand that you get what you pay for. Even in Australia, where we favour a more relaxed dress code, I love my Loake’s and RM Williams. One day I hope to have have Lobb’s or Cleverly.

    Finally got around to watching the rest of the video. A true delight! It could easily have continued for another five minutes or so with more about the new shoes, but maybe that is another video?
    Kirby is the perfect host here, lets the subjects talk, mostly, uninterrupted. And what stories they had to tell. I'll have to re-watch this at a later time preferable with a dram of my favourite scotch.
    It's remarkable how much work you got done during this short London visit, Kirby. And hopefully there is more to come, you have hinted at it...
    The chair Kirby is sitting in is positively frightening! Right out of a horror movie.
    Full marks for this one!

    Would you be so kind as to tell what trousers can match with long boots if one wishes to wear it in the normal use? (Not to look like going to hunting or nobles living in the country side.)
    The way Dominic wears the riding boots with jeans obviously looks marvellous but I wonder what else can be worn in a bit more formal attire than jeans.

    Loved this. I wonder if any of the west end makers outsource their work to makers who machine stitch. I know there's a west end closer who is a wizard machinist.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  2 роки тому

      Traditional bespoke is always closed by hand... there are some people that offer a machine stitched hybrid. Stefano Bemer in Florence is one... but I do not know of anyone in London.

    • @rolf2360
      @rolf2360 2 роки тому

      The terminology is a bit confused, so let me clear it up. In West-End shoemaking there are 'closers' and 'makers'. Closers make the uppers, stitching them together (with a sewing machine ) and applying decorative hand stitches, if the design requires it (aprons/lakes on loafers and 'Norwegian' style shoes. Makers do the bottom work, lasting, welting, out-soling and finishing. Both jobs can and are done by outworkers. There are fewer closers in the trade than makers, as the saying goes, you need one closer to keep three makers in work. In the video (53:40) Dominic mentions the late Jimmy Kowalczyk (spelling ?) who in his, probably 60 year long career, had the reputation of being the finest closer in the West-End.
