    Erica and her family have been through so much. She really inspired me to do serious decluttering. She is one amazing woman!

    Erica has done wonders for us, and she handles my supportive but cluttered mentality with panache! For the record, I was never angry about the knife. Just annoyed. And thinking back on it, I could have rehabilitated the knife, but I never took proper care of it. The knife I replaced it with is much nicer!

    I just love the quote, "Mistakes are rarely fatal."
    Our family has moved fourteen times in the last 48 years. It has been critical to live a minimalist lifestyle.

    I've been married for 38 years and we've moved 14 times and currently live 3 hours away from family. I've been on my decluttering journey for 3 years now and one of my reasons for becoming minimalist is so I don't become overwhelmed at the thought of moving close to family when we retire if we decide to do that and/or leaving our children with the job of sorting through all our stuff.

    I like Dana White's idea to declutter visible spaces first because it's usually not big decisions and the difference can be enjoyed so it encourages you to do more.

    I am not sure you can have too many spatulas. I sometimes burn spatulas while cooking. A mouse chewed the handle of one of my favorites so I cut off that end and I kept it. I rotate them into the garden tool boxes, and I have used one to stir a can of paint. Once a spatula has left the kitchen to be used for some non-cooking purpose, it gets labeled, and it never returns.

    Two of my favorite peeps! I really resonate with the “reverse” decluttering, keeping the important stuff, and getting rid of the rest. It makes decluttering the less important stuff a much easier process, and a much QUICKER process. It’s easier on the brain and the emotions.

    I love watching Erica’s channel. She is very real so doesn’t make others feel like their home always has to be perfectly picked up or clean. I am minimal-ish as Erica says she is also. I am not a minimalist because I love plants, books and my craftroom. 😊

    About children... I have been donating things even when I was not really decluttering. So, every year I asked my children if they were having too many toys, which of these they dont use any more. I explained as early as they understood, that there are children out there, who have nothing. And if they dont need these, those children would be sooo happy to have some... So my children were kind, and gladly donated things: toys, clothes, pencils... Everything they were not using. We had NO problem with kids rooms cluttering. It was me, not letting yet everything go😅, but I am wiser now. Thats why kids rooms were in better shape than other areas.

    As the grandma who has more money than my kids, I enjoy buying some of the more expensive toys that my grandkids want, but their parents can't afford. I am struggling with the concept that my daughter easily decutters toys. In that case, I would rather not waste my money. My grandkids are 4 and 7. What to do?

    • @MinimalistHome
      @MinimalistHome  2 місяці тому +3

      I have a friend who gives the grandparents lists. It’s a bit less fun, but helpful because she knows what the kids want and will use

      I think you might consider gifting experiences instead, especially as the kids get older. Dinner and a movie with grandma one on one is a treasured memory forever and can’t be declutterred. My husband still talks about such evenings with his grandma. My family was poor and my grandma bought me necessities like shoes. She also paid for me to have braces and I can think of her when ever I smile in the mirror. Thanks for your question, I got to remember how special my own grandma was ❤

      My mom buys the more expensive gifts for my kids too and I'm so thankful for it! I think the key is to let the kids pick out the gift and not guess what they may like. I don't do any surprise gifts for my kids bc I don't want to be stuck with stuff they don't care for cluttering up the house.We look through things they are interested in on Amazon and make a list. We buy them one gift and then they can ask grandma for one expensive gift (i.e. Lego dragon). Their other grandparents give us money for each kid and then I help my kids pick out from their list what they can get from the money given. So they are learning to prioritize, stay within budget and learn that they can't have everything they want on their long list...to be content and grateful. ☺️

    Loved your honest discussion. Now when I give any gift I tell the person - feel free to put it in donate, re-gift , use it or whatever - no strings attached People usually give me a weird smile but it frees them from keeping stuff they don’t want. So I try to feel the same - if you give it to me, it’s mine to keep or not. I know not always easy. Cheers
