I noticed aphids on my milkweed plant , the stems were completely yellow and I started to go get the bug spray to get rid of them and then I remembered Laura saying that sometimes it is good to have a sacrificial plant for aphids. I stopped and looked closer and saw a few ladybugs so I knew I would not be spraying it. Today I looked and the stems are completely clean of aphids! Good job ladybugs! 🐞

Had starts out on my potting bench. The bugs were feasting on them. Then came the frogs as my horse trough fountain is near there (Lily pad plants are inside it as well). The frogs have laid eggs in the fountain and the bugs are gone. Looking forward to the tadpoles!

I have aphids on my cosmos, was going to trim them back but I've also noticed a lot of lacewing eggs on nearby plants. Hoping that they take care of the spider mites too. (My DD brought an ivy home from a big box store, been battling them ever since.)

I am working on eradicating quack grass from an area I will place my raised-bed vegetable garden. I was digging deep in the soil when I encountered this strange tan colored sack-like thing. It was a toad! He just sat there, you know how rabbits sit still in plain sight as if that makes them invisible. I had to gently scoot his butt so I could continue digging in the area while keeping an eye on him. Several minutes later, I think I may have unknowingly put pressure on his body. I heard a squeal. Toads squeal?!

Me as well. One was completely covered in yellow aphids and the one next to it was clean! I didn't want to sacrifice it though as it was the nicest one. They were already struggling as I think they get just a bit too much shade. So I used my gloved hand to scrape them off then hosed it down a bit.

Mint story. When we first bought out house, we knew nothing about plants. The previous owners planted mint in the ground against the house. It only took 1 growing season for the mint to wrap itself halfway around our 1,100 Sq ft house. The smell was so strong, I could smell it through the walls. I ripped it out 7 years ago, and it wasn't until last year that I stopped finding it randomly. Don't put mint in the ground. 😆

If you grow any kind of mint, you need to border it. Keep it cut and don't let it seed. Mint is a fantastic addition to a herb garden. I use the Mint leaves in my handmade soaps and I infuse the mint in olive oil for a multitude of uses, mostly in my soaps. Mint is great when you use it for tea when you have a cold or sore throat. Don't give up on the great mint plants. Just keep it bordered. It's a shame not to grow it. I also sell the seeds from my mint plant in the spring. Great addition to the herb garden. Lemon balm is also a plant that grows wild and spreads like fire, but I could not do without it. I keep it contained and use it all summer and dry it in the winter. I know your mint grew way out of control but keep one mint plant and look up all the things you use mint for. It's not just a pesky plant. It's a great Herb.

FYI- All parts of lilies are EXTREMELY toxic to cats. I had one walk by one and get pollen on her fur that had dropped off onto the ground, later I caught her cleaning it off. Just that small amount was enough to put her in the ICU for a week and end up with permanent kidney damage. You might want to discourage your kitty from walking around the ones in front of the chicken coop. Maybe put those prickly mats around them.

There are cultivated liatris and wild types. The wild ones are invasive in Ontario. They are probably the ones with the long tap roots. You don’t want those - they spread everywhere and choke out natural habitats in wetlands. The govt is trying to eliminate them with different techniques (insects etc) but I don’t know that they’re having much success. The cultivated ones on the other hand are very well mannered. In fact I wish they spread volunteers a little bit more!

You can do that, and also the "real" Bergamot they use in commercial tea is actually a citrus plant the "Bergamot orange" where they use the distilled oil, they taste similar and can be used almost the same

There are 2 kinds, the annuals you usually see in mixed flower pots made up from the garden centers or they’re labeled as seed geraniums. Then there are the perennial versions also known as Cranesbill. There are lots of different types of these. Some are low growing and some get quite tall and bushy. Today (6/25) Laura did a whole video on them.

@@Brandon-yr3nj Yes, in Virginia, I can grow all of those, but, I have zero shade. I have azaleas transplanted by incompetent landscapers, from partially shaded area close to the house, to absolute morning to sunset full sun, straight into the lawn, burried crowns, they are suffering the heat here. They have a little life to them, just enough rain has saved them. I feel very sad when the tropical storms hit the Atlantic coast, but my garden always benefits, also wild blackberries are going to be great for all the rain we recieved yesterday. It started at 11 a.m. slow gentle, breaks down to a mist off and on until about 3 p.m. got heavy for a while, not much wind, didn't end until after 9 p.m. We are 2 hours inland from Norfolk, Va. Not knowing where you live, but check with your city garbage disposal (dump). Where I live, they have one site that they will dump compost into a trailer for you ($15 per cubic yard), or at another site you can shift it yourself and take as much or as little as you want for free. DH and I filled a small truck bed and topped off a flower bed. Going to do it again this fall when everything is getting ready for winter so that I'll be ready for the spring without waiting for DH to have enough time.
