  • Ukrainian forces have been fighting back against Russian assaults on the outskirts of Kyiv. Authorities are urging citizens to defend the capital, and the army says it repelled an assault on a military base. In the latest developments, president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has tweeted that more than 100,000 Russian troops have now entered Ukraine. The Russian foreign ministry says it's ready to work for peace and stability. But Russia also says it has launched a barrage of cruise missiles and rockets against Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeated a call to Ukrainian soldiers to surrender - also making baseless accusations against the Ukrainian government.
The European Union has already imposed economic sanctions on Russia. French naval forces have now intercepted a cargo vessel loaded with cars heading for Russia. They suspect it belongs to a company targeted by the sanctions. President Emmanuel Macron fears the war in Ukraine will have lasting consequences for Europe.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is meeting with Poland's prime minister and Lithuania's president here in Berlin to discuss further sanctions on Russia. Western nations have already imposed a wide range of sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. On Friday both the US and the EU announced plans to put sanctions directly on President Vladimir Putin and his foreign minister Sergei Lavrov. But the Polish government says it wants the EU to go further and sanction Russia more harshly. Many of the people caught up in the invasion have fled to neighboring countries. Tens of thousands of Ukrainian refugees have fled since Thursday. Most are headed to countries neighboring Ukraine. They include EU members Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, as well as non-EU member, Moldova. As fighting worsens, these countries are now bracing for more refugees in the coming days.

As a Pole, I haven't seen Polish people being *THIS* mobilized and united in quite a long time. There are collections, groups on FB with hundreds of thousands of people offering Ukrainians to sleep at their places (even for months, till the war stops), organizing transport for them from the border or even entering Ukraine themselves to pick Ukrainians up from Lviv and other places, sending enormous parcels of food and essentials. We're aware that Ukraine is fighting for all of us. Stay strong, Ukraine, Slava Ukrainii!

My family lives in the east of Poland so they inform of what is going on at the border. The reponse of Poles to this crisis has been incredible - people are doing collections, offering accommodation in their own homes. Polish/Ukrainian relationship have always been a bit difficult because of history but I am so proud of my fellow Poles for looking past that and doing what is right.

I want Ukraininan people to know that they are our brothers and sisters. Our doors are open to all of them. If you come you will be welcomed with arms wide open. You will be fed, treated, comforted and given a roof over your head.
It pains us that we can not send our army across the boarder to help you at this moment, but if you come to us you will be taken care of. There are already many people volunteering while our leaders work on strategies of providing long term aid.

You don't understand how much this means to me as a Ukrainian. I rarely cry but this brought tears to my eyes. I wish with every part of my being to be out there fighting for my country, even though me and my family moved to Canada years ago. My soul aches because I feel like i'm failing my people by not fighting, bleeding, and dying alongside them.
To see such support from Poland...I have absolutely no words. Just tears and eternal gratitude.

However, I despise its attitude in this crisis. It is beyond insulting to Ukraine to block weapons aid until 3 days after the war has started.
