    That battery impressed me! I have been there, lots of cranking to hope it goes and then draining fuel at the carburetor and on and on. I worked for Helfert's Helena Farm Supply in East Helena, MT over the summer. I rebuilt the gas 265 in the shop 1650, we got a reliance kit and made it a 283. It started with me pulling the hood and fuel tank to reseal the steering unit, and then figured I should adjust the valves. I pulled the valvecover and noticed the springs sitting off in the retainer... I found a bunch of half circles of spring laying in the head, so we decided to pull the head. There was a ton of wear in the sleeves, it had been getting just a little coolant in the pan, and we could hear a slight wrist pin knock, so I took the pan off. It still had the 2 piece rod bushings, which fell out of the rod when I took them apart. I pressed in and reamed the new solid bushings, cleaned up the O ring seal surfaces, and reassembled it. Put new guides and valves in the head, cut the old seats, reassembled it, and it ran great after all that. I moved back to WA in the fall, but I had great times working there and talking about Olivers and whites with Neil, the owner.

    It's been pretty cold here in South Dakota. We finished harvesting corn on January 3rd. It was sitting in water and we needed to wait for the ground to get good and hard. It's hard to believe the difference of how cold it can get between here and where you live. I guess freezing ground was our best friend last fall. We got every acre harvested just needed it to get cold. Thanks for the video Chris.

      I just finished my corn a week ago for the same reason. I've got a friend that has been running soybeans the last 2 days, so there's a fair amount of it going on. I know you guys get colder than we do, we had to wait for some snow to melt before we had enough frost in the ground.
      Glad to hear you got done, it's always a relief.

    I have been long spoiled since my Snap-On dealer sold me a $180 infrared heat gun when they first came on the market. It is a very quick tool to spot dead holes or underperforming ones simply by shooting temps on the exhaust manifold. Also great for finding bad electrical connections. I would have shot some oil in the cylinder to see if it improved the compression by helping seal piston rings. Today I would simply insert my trusty HF inspection camera in the cylinder thru the spark plug hole and look around. Ain't technology great. New tractor "Technicians" have to have a computer to tell them what us old farts could tell them by listening, feeling, and having a knowledge of reciprocating parts.
    Keep up the great videos, and be careful that the 1600 does not steal any of the 1855 parts.

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  2 роки тому +7

      I seemed to have hidden my IR thermometer from myself. I was looking for it so I could check the manifold. And I did have a scope camera, then I used it in my sewer pipe, caught it on something and pulled the camera right off the end of the snake! That's right, I'm why I can't have nice things!

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris Here's a thought. Clear off a shelf,add plastic tubs and perhaps half a dozen battery tenders. I speak with personal experience, batteries supported by a trickle charger with a chip just last and last. You sure got a bunch of equipment, having batteries you can trust to start the stuff comes in mighty handy. Not a lot of money need be spent,either.

      I agree about the trickle chargers. I use a 2 amp lawn mower charger except when I need a tractor to start now. Chris, I know it takes a bit to get oil to the top but, that seemed a bit too long before oil started to appear.
    I'm honestly surprised you didn't get shocked when you pulled that plug wire. Didn't Gehl get absorbed into the Agco? Used to see a lot of their products in my area, then suddenly, it was either JD, NH or MF. Even IHC fizzled out. Of course IHC is now NH.
    Hahahaha trying to become an "ice road tractor driver"? LOL I think Herman would still float across that... the wagon, not so much LOL Cheers :)

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  2 роки тому +1

      That seemed typical for an Oliver Waukesha to me. They get that oil from the rear main, and the way the holes line up up it meters the oil to keep too much from going up top. It drives me nuts when guys rev their Olivers right off the start. The mains and rods get it fairly quick, but the valve train...
      I've goten shocked before, the secret is to grab the rubber part, not the metal. 😆🤣
      Gehl got bought out by Manitou. They still make industrial equipment with the Gehl name on it. The Deere dealers in my area that had Gehl were forced to drop it by big green. Kinda hard to fight that.
      I'm thinking Herman is going to have to try that soon. That ice has to be getting thick by now.

    Does a Oliver 1600 have and engine oil pressure relief valve? If so where is it and can it be adjusted. I have a 1600 that I just recently got running and it was supposed to be a good strong running tractor and it does run good but a put a manual gauge on the oil pressure and it’s a little lower than I would like cold haven’t run it enough to see what it is warm but the pressure also doesn’t change much from low rpm to high so I was wondering if it could be a sticky relief valve from sitting

    • @ThatOliverGuyChris
      @ThatOliverGuyChris  Рік тому

      It could be just that. Just above the right front engine mount where the casting comes out is a hex plug. I don't remember the exact size somewhere in that 7/8 to 1 inch size. Screw that out and the relief valve is in there. It's a spring and a barrel shaped plunger. I had a 77 with a sticky plunger and couldn't get it out. I finally ran it without the cap and spring and gently tapped it in, letting the oil pressure push it back out. A few back and forths doing that and it freed up. You might want to have someone ready to shut it down so you don't have to try to hold the plunger in while reaching for the key. It could get messy in a hurry.
      One other thing, they are not a high pressure engine. The warning light doesn't turn on until it gets in the 5-8 psi area. Normal operating pressure is in the 25-30 psi area.

      @@ThatOliverGuyChris thanks for the information my 1600 when you first start it the oil pressure is only like 12-15 cold at an idle but if you speed it up it goes to about 20-22 psi and if you idle it down again the oil pressure doesn’t drop so that’s why I was thinking the relief valve but now that you have informed me that they aren’t real high pressure engines I’m not as worried
