    The plexiglass crankcase worked exactly as well as I would have expected. It was a great proof of concept though, showed everything was working before committing to welding up a steel one.

      Until now I was wondering why engines wasn't made of plastic ;)

    • @NLynchOEcake
      @NLynchOEcake 3 роки тому +15

      I think in theory if you could somehow fit extremely long studs straight from one head to the other the plexiglass would have been totally fine. The problem with this configuration is that the crankcase is structural, so it needs to bear the load of combustion. Every fire, the pistons push down but the head gets pushed up - the crankcase needs to have enough tensile strength to withstand the force of both pistons trying to blow the heads off the cylinder, hence the plastic failing by the area around the bolts ripping out. If the studs could reach all the way through to each other the crankcase would take a negligible amount of force. In this configuration it would have been neat as an alcohol motor maybe.

    • @NLynchOEcake
      @NLynchOEcake 3 роки тому +3

      @@trollbane66 I think it would depend on if it were crankcase scavenged or not but in this case it appears to have an oil injection setup so exhaust in the case would be less of an issue. There would probably be issues at the interface between the cylinders and the plastic case though, cylinders can get bloody hot and would likely melt the case

      A heavier flywheel would make it much smoother. Lowering compression and making it run on oil would slow the burn down but isn't particularly helpful as it reduces power significantly.
      More headgaskets will also affect the valve timing reducing power even more.
      Your engines are smooth because they barely make enough power to run.
      There is a reason they stopped using low compression oil burners once a reliable supply of fuel was available

      Ok yes, sure, but in the end it doesnt matter. No need to get specific. People call boxers flats and people call flats boxers. Its not gonna end the world if it is mixed around.

    The advantage of *Boxer engines* is torque, BMW and Subaru both use it. Great video

    I think the transparent acrylic crankcase can hold better if you support the cylinder and the head weight.

    Good proof of concept.
    Some fundamentals of theory are missing though.
    A great amount of work went in to your project, and for that I respect you. Nicely done. I wish I was a part of it.
    Now for the MK2!

    Great work well done when I saw the clear crankcase in plastic I thought it would not last long not enough strength. Keep up the good work!

      Not a boxer. You need to take one of the crank wheels from the donor motor and machine in a new crank pin hole then press it all together. Once the pistons oppose each other it will have perfect primary Ballance. You can make the crank case out of cork and it'll hold up.

    Zen or the art of craftmanship. Chapeau Monsieur, I admire and envy your skills. One remark: This is not a boxer engin but a flat 2. Or more accurate, a 180 degrees V2. In a boxer engin the pistons will move in opposite directions because every rod connects with a seperate crank on a flat 180d crankshaft. I can imagine that this was near impossible to achieve. However, in comparison to your accomplishment here, this is just semantics, splitting hairs. In enjoyed this video immensly. Thx.

    Damn your GOOD. I can't help but think! Maybe sandwiching the glass between 2 metal gaskets. Relieving some of the stress. There was a lot of vibration adding to that stress. Just a thought. Bottom line! I'm SUPER IMPRESSED. TYVM for sharing this. ALOHA.
