Another companion to 'The Left Hand...' could be 'Stars in My Pocket Like Grains of Sand.' It's a space opera, the narrator is a diplomat, and it has an experimental (to us, readers) construction of gender.
Now I need to read 'Inherit the Stars.'

One of your best videos yet. I love the whole concept of 'if you like this (or don't like this)... then try this' and the selections in this video were, I thought, especially good. Personally I liked Altered Carbon but I really get the concerns about the very graphic levels of violence so its good to have an alternative. Fall of Moondust is a delightful classic read whether or not you like the Martian. Darkling Sea sounds good, as does The Word for World is Forest. But I particularly agreed with your analysis of Rendezvous with Rama (good but slow) and Old Man's War (light) so I've added both Inherit the Stars and Dauntless to my read list. Thank you. I'd also suggest The Forever War by Joe Haldeman as another alternative to Old Man's War. For me, this is what a great UA-cam book channel is all about.

Military SF - You might like to try 'Outriders' by Jay Posey - an all action adventure that follows a 'special' special ops team. The sequel 'Sungrazer' is gripping too. I always recommend 'The Gone World' by Thomas Swetelitsch, time travel, terrorism, serial killers, the end of the world, all link into one story. If you like that you could look at 'Tomorrow and Tomorrow' about a virtual recreation of a city that has been obliterated, and how a man is trying to cope with grief caused the loss of his family in the incident, by catching glimpses of their recreations. He uncovers a murder victim in the recreation, and becomes obsessed with solving the murder.

Personally I would have made the comparison of "Rendevous with Rama" by Artur C. Clarke to Greg Bear's "Eon" they were far more similar and yet Greg Bear explored some really interesting concepts that kept me more engaged than Rendevous with Rama.

Both are quite funny and really take you to fun places. The sci-fi elements are pretty cool. I highly recommend. I've read all of Bobiverse (a new book is coming soon), and 14 books in Expeditionary Force (plus the audio drama and two spin off books about the Mavericks). I have "memories" of Rendezvous with Rama as though I was there. But like you, I wanted so much more. And can I ever remember characters in his books? Nope. But I love the other aspects so much that I put up with these frustrations. I will have to see if Inherit the Stars is in my library. For some reason Amazon has the mass market paperback at $36.98 and the paperback at $329.28. WHAT?!

2:51 - I would have turned those two the other way around. _The Martian_ is soooo much better (and "life-like") than _A Fall of Moondust._
5:32 - Hmmm... Another one to my TBR pile. Not that I find anything wrong with the _Rifters_ series - it's just that I want more similar stuff (and it sounds as if Cambias has some _very_ interesting ideas and fun plot elements.)
7:13 - _The Word for World is "Forest"_ is, IMO, one of the weakest of Le Guin's works (a bit too formulaic, like the "new wave" Westerns - mysterious, noble natives, military fortress with evil colonel and good lieutenant...), but it is still better than 95% of often recommended SciFi. Read both, of course.
9:57 - Thank you, thank you! 😀 Now, _this_ one is, IMO, the best Auntie Ursula wrote, along with _The Dispossessed,_ _Four Ways to Forgiveness_ and, if you are into "imagined lyrical ethnography", _Always Coming Home._ I never felt a need for anything in there to be explained to me - the novel spoke very directly, almost viscerally.
I find the parallel between Le Guin's and Varley's novel pretty superficial; their very approach to the definition of sex and gender are very different. But, again, _do_ read both.
11:55 - Yes, the sequels _are_ weaker than the original _Rama,_ and, let's face it, Clarke is not aq literary mastermind. He does have some good ideas, but their realization is pretty pedestrian.
However, about "not getting all the answers": we don't get them in real life, do we, now? Remaining mysteries are as important in a novel of this kind as are discoveries (and not only for their potential for sequels.)
13:52 - Hm, Stapledon and "easy" in the same sentence... Then again, i haven't read _Sirius..._
15:19 - Despite the interesting premise of _Dauntless,_ don't you find the whole _Lost Fleet_ series and its numerous spin-offs a bit, umm, simple and formulaic? Then again, 20 novels of pretty solid MilFic might come handy.
