- Taking the new ETR-470 High-Speed train from Thessaloniki to Athens on Greece's national rail TrainOSE.
Though there was a slight delay, this train is definitely an improvement over the older train. Besides being newer and slightly faster (the infrastructure doesn't support the ETR-470's full speed potential yet) than the older train, it also only makes one stop, in Larisa.
This train is a little more expensive than the standard Greek national rail trains. A ticket between Thessaloniki and Athens on this train is €55 in 2nd class, €65 in first. The regular trains are usually about €12 less.

Looks like an interesting way to travel. I'll never get to Thessaloniki, but I have ridden on a train in Greece. To Kalavryta, back in 2018. THAT was an experience. I hope you're doing well. Enjoy Dublin.
Thanks Bob! Apparently they’re going to make this train even faster when the infrastructure can support a faster train. Will get even easier to travel up to Thessaloníki than it is now!

For sure! It's just too bad mainland Greece doesn't have more railways. There used to be one (not high-speed) from Thessaloniki to Alexandroupoli that goes through some amazing landscapes. Went on it years before starting my channel. Unfortunately there's no train service at all on that route now (not past Drama).

Thank you! It passes by Mt. Olympus but this specific train only stops in Larisa, which is further south.

@@GlobalNiko Yeah! The old trains were not as good as this. For Greece it is a total new generation for their railway.
The train is advertised to do 3:55, but it's scheduled to do a bit more than 4 hours

How long does this train take to get to Athens?
Is this connection still in operation? Connection search both by Hellenic Trains and Deutsche Bahn only finds connections with 4h 42min travel time and more stops than in Larissa.
Yeah cause after the Tempi crash the connections have been rescheduled and take more time and the etr train operates I think the IC 54 but stops like normal intercity. The 3:55 connection doesn’t exist because more stops and more slowly cause of the accident
When did u buy the tickets they asked you to give them your ID card?
I bought the tickets 2 weeks before the trip. ID card is shown when you're at the port before going out to the dock to board the ferry.
One correction the etr 470 is limited to 205 knh in Greece
Yeah but there is no ETCS so limit is 160 km/h although lines allow for 200 km/h. Also the Kallidromos tunnel allows for speeds of 250 km/h but the ETR 470 cannot go speeds like that.
What is the speed of this train mate
It's designed to go up to 250km/hr, but the infrastructure can't yet support that speed, so it goes up to about 170km/hr for now.
They allowed people to board a hot train.

Thanks for the video, but damn, trains are just an embarrassment in Greece, it's pissing me off. This is supposed to be a new train? It looks as dirty, slow and uncomfortable as trains were always here.

Train travel is very safe in Greece if you stay away from the trains. If you want to be a station master you can do a 20 minute on line course, or make a donation to a political party. If you're a woman you can perform sexual favours for a politician and you too can get a job in the civil service.
