    I’ve been impressed with their Moondance quilt. Great budget quilt. The weight on this tent has always made me shy away but can’t beat the price.

      Yeah I think another $100 spent and you'd have some good weight savings, but at $100 it's great!

      I did the quilt as a test to see if I’d like a quilt on your review and not disappointed at all, still not sure about throwing down more money on one of the cottage brand quilts and will rock this quilt with my Nemo disco bag in some cold weather to see. I digress I think featherstone is on to providing quality products for beginners or folks like me who are testing the waters of something different.

      @@roamingrick8736 I’m glad it worked for you. If you are happy with it I see no reason to “upgrade” to a cottage quilt.

    I own this tent and have taken it into some gnarly storms in the Uintas. Does a great job. It is not a lightweight tent for UL backpacking. But, if you're ok with a little extra weight and price is your primary obstacle, this is a great option.

    I appreciate you looking at affordable options on this channel. Even from the first years, you have done that. If it hadn't been for your first review of BearButt Hammocks, I probably wouldn't have begun backpacking. As a beginner, I needed inexpensive options to get me started. You provided those on your channel and I fell in love with backpacking! I've now invested in more expensive gear because of my love now for camping! Good luck as you move forward on your channel. I always check it out!
    BTW, I cannot believe how big your kids are getting! So fun to see you building so many camping memories in their lives!😎😎

    I love budget gear options it makes it easier to get in the backcountry without the expensive cost of premium gear. This is what big box stores should be selling instead of cheap sunny day tents that are weather resistant. Good video!

    If you're going backpacking only a couple times per year with a tent partner, this seems like a really great option. No reason to break the bank when you don't have to.

    That's a good price for a solid tent. I have been trying to get my hands on their Backbone tent. I love the tie off designs they have come up with. Jay, who you just camped with, had their one man freestanding, and it was pretty nice when we got out last October. I am all in for good quality at an affordable price. Split that weight up between two people and that is only 2 lbs per person for a shelter. Nice find!

    I have both Paria tents, the Bryce 1P and the Zion 2P. They are fantastic for the price but yes a bit on the heavier side.
    Glad to see you doing some “budget” gear, keep up the good work.

    I got my Kazoo 1p backpacking tent for $70 on Amazon and it’s been awesome. It weights in the 3 LB range and packs up small. It doesn’t have much room on the inside, but I only use it to sleep in.

    2kg is not a heavy tent. It’s heavier than some really light or ultralight options, but I went backpacking with a 4.5kg tent for years without problem. I agree that lighter is better, but I wouldn’t dismiss a 2kg tent as a car camping only option.

    I'm still resisting expensive tents for backpacking. I just don't think it's worth paying >$300 for a tent. I was considering the Featherstone. It's pretty much the same cookie cutter design of the MSR Hubba Hubba/NatureHike Mongar 2/Star River 2. I've collected 3 budget backpacking tents this year and combined it was $300 total. They've been great for lending to my brothers & nephews for car camping trips and an overnight backpacking trip. This style of tent is solid. A bit heavy but has plenty of space and nice door design to prevent wind.

      I backpack quite a bit and budget gear is all I use. Or I just get the name brands on sale or older models. Got my Mountainsmith Scream 55 for $88 online. Best backpack I’ve ever used.

    This was my first backpacking tent and I still love it to this day! I recently got the Lanshan 1 to cut some weight but I still love this tent.
    To be COMPLETELY HONEST, if you’re just doing a few backpacking trips a year, it doesn’t make too much sense trying to be super ultralight. If you’re thru hiking, then yes, cut all the weight you can.
    I was at a 12 lbs. base weight even with this heavier tent. After changing out this tent for a lighter one and replacing my sleeping bag for a quilt, I’m at about a 9 lbs. base weight now. I say that because I’m all about saving weight, but at the end of the day 3 lbs doesn’t make a big difference if you’re just gonna be out hiking for a couple days here and there.
    This is a dope tent for anyone and especially those just getting into backpacking!

    Not bad for a $100 tent. My 3P alps mountaineering was about $130 and weighs 5 lbs. it’s withstood all kinds of rain. So this looks like a nice option as well. My alps tent has the dual zipper which I def use for ventilation. I will unzip it at the bottom to get a little air at times when it gets warm at night but rainy. And it’s tall enough to accommodate a cot which makes it more roomy for two to sleep in on a car camping trip so we aren’t kicking each other snd can stow our gear under the cot. Thanks for thoroughly testing this tent. I know someone who is looking to buy a two person tent.

    I still swear by my Nature Hike Tagar 2. 5 years now, lots of use in the mountains, rain, and some serious wind. It's a greenhouse during the day time, and warm nights can kinda suck. But $100 for a 2lb tent that's lasted this long is one heck of a deal. At least for backpacking anyway. I recently picked up a Fresh & Black tent from Decathlon for car camping, this one looks quite a bit better.

    Considering how well the rain fly held up, this could be a great fly+footprint combo for lightweight backpacking, as long as the bugs aren't terribly bothersome.😊

    I have noticed several companies sell the same tent with the same design. At about the same price but with different names. Are all these companies selling the same tent they don't actually make. I have the Paria version it is also a good tent.

    • @BackcountryExposure
      @BackcountryExposure  4 місяці тому

      Yeah more or less. They are essentially white label tents with a generic design that one or more factories own. They then sell the tent at a wholesale production cost and allow the business to make little tweaks. Maybe that’s slight fabric changes or colors, or components.
      It’s pretty easy to start an outdoor gear company and never design a piece of gear yourself. Alibaba being the main resource to do so, and within any industry. The BRS stove is another example of a white label stove.

      @BackcountryExposure silly question but how do you think it would fair in crappy weather with the doors not staked out.. or is that a bad idea because it will limit air flow??

  • @MRBenchwork
    @MRBenchwork Рік тому

    I wonder how much weight you could shed by just deleting or exchanging items for this tent. Lighter stakes, omitting the footprint, removing un needed plastic clips and so on. It would be kinda fun to see how much lighter you could make it without going to the extremes of changing materials.

    • @MRBenchwork
      @MRBenchwork Рік тому

      It could also be interesting to use the rain cover as a template for a lighter material. It would be a bit of a mix of commercially made and DIY but it could end up being a light weight package that's also sub $300 total.

    Hey Devin:
    You stated a hydrostatic rating of 5000mm and I am cross referencing that with Featherstone’s website which says 2000mm. Has that been a change in their manufacturing? Or was that just a typo on this review? Do you know?

    Nice review, similar to my two Eureka tents…one is about 7 lbsish and the other is about 8 lbsish. The comment about “line locks”…can a person add and is there a place/link that sells that kind of item?

      Yes, Linelocs could be added after the fact. They are easy to find on Amazon or a few other places for cheap. From the factory though having them in place would be a nice touch. :)
