Rearranging the Tracks on Fleetwood Mac's Rumours | Resequencer

- Опубліковано 24 лис 2024
- We're finally returning to our Resequencer series to look at the classic 1977 album from Fleetwood Mac. It's chock full of great tunes but the original running order feels like it was picked out of a hat. Today, we're going to try to fix that.
Let us know which of our tracklists works the best and let us know how you would sequence the album. Thanks for watching!

Look at you, Kramzer! Being all super creative and whatnot! In fact, I am seriously considering sending you the demos for the album I'm working on. Just to see where you would put everything. Because I am impressed. 👍
I think Kramzer’s outline works really well and improves the considerable strengths of this classic album. Well done!
I did this a couple of years ago, but I also included several of the other songs recorded during the sessions, as well as alternate takes and demos. I used a lot of the "Rough Mixes" because I feel it makes the album feel more organic and less polished, and, therefore, it's a more emotional ride. My version works as a 75-minute two-album (single disc) set. Here's how mine goes:
SIDE A:
1. Brushes (Never Going Back Again) - Instrumental
2. Second-Hand News [Sessions]
3. Go Your Own Way [Sessions]
4. Dreams [Sessions/Rough Mix]
5. Don't Stop [Sessions/Rough Mix]
SIDE B:
1. Never Going Back Again [Sessions/Rough Mix]
2. Songbird [Sessions/Rough Mix]
3. Silver Springs [Sessions/Rough Mix]
4. The Chain [Demo]
5. Keep Me There [Demo]
SIDE C:
1. You Make Loving Fun [Sessions/Rough Mix]
2. Planets of the Universe [Early Demo]
3. I Don't Wanna Know [Early Take]
4. Oh, Daddy [Sessions/Rough Mix]
5. Gold Dust Woman #1 [Alternate Take/Session/Rough Mix]
SIDE D:
1. Mic the Screecher [Jam Session]
2. Think About It [Demo]
3. For Duster (The Blues) [Jam Session]
4. Doesn't Anything Last? [Acoustic Duet]
5. Never Going Back Again [Instrumental]
6. The Chain [Album Version]

Hmm going for another Tusk like experience, eh. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic Give a listen - I think it's a better album. I think that Tusk is a natural progression from these sessions - not the jarring shift that several critics made it out to be.
This belongs in the category 'waaaay too much time in our hands'
It took about ten minutes
@@ryankramzer1256 These days i just rip and randomize on the infinite playlist.. It's all good fun here, thanks :) maybe how about resequencing multiside albums into one shot suites, with no splits.. and vice versa..
I do believe that "You make Loving Fun" may just be the greatest song ever written in tribute to an electrician!
"Wichita Lineman" would like a word with you.
I would say that the difference is that "Wichita Lineman" (which is one of my favourite songs) is sung from the point of view of the electrician while "You make loving fun" is an ode to an electrician for putting the spark back in Christine's love life.
So I went on Spotify and decided to make my own playlist version/sequencer. As vinyl had to be under 45 minutes in the 70s (from what I researched) my tracklist will reflect that. :
Side A.
1. Second Hand News - Buckingham. It's energetic folk rocker.
2. Don't Stop - Buckingham and McVie
3. Dreams - Nicks. You gotta have a Nicks song among the first three tracks and this fits
4. Songbird - McVie
5. The Chain - Buckingham, Nicks, McVie. Despite all the adversity, the band will stay strong together. Best way to close Side A.
Side B
1. Go Your Own Way - you always open Side B with a banger. Also offers his side to "Dreams"
2. I Don't Want to Know - Nicks and Buckingham
3. Never Going Back Again - this is my least favourite song on the album but it's pretty popular on Spotify so I included it. Buckingham
4. You Make Loving Fun - McVie. The last upbeat song on the album before the last two tracks.
5. Gold Dust Woman - Nicks.
6. Silver Springs - I excised Oh Daddy! because many consider that the weakest song on the album. This song sums up the album basically. Nicks.
Nah, Rumours is such a perfect title
Kram’s idea is either sacrilege or epicness. I’m leaning toward the latter. Love it 🎼🤟🏻
Good shout for a re-sequencer. My sequence:
A1. Don't stop (a great opener, and I think the only place it will work)
A2. Go your own way (keep the high quality going)
A3. You make loving fun (same as before, packing it full at the start)
A4. Gold dust woman
A5. I don't want to know
A6. Songbird (a great sending off of side A)
B1. Second hand news (the start of side B, bringing it back to life after Songbird)
B2. Dreams (the gravitas of side B straight after the first one)
B3. Never going back again
B4. Oh Daddy
B5. Silver Springs
B6. The Chain (the ultimate album closer, they could keep that outro going a little longer)
Second Hand News kicking off the second side. Nice.
I love the wails at the end of Gold Dust Woman and a great way to end the album. Good call Fleetwood Mac!
Never Going Back Again is a track I often went to first spinning the vinyl as a kid. The way it weaves through emotions over a the plucking of Buckingham always sounded like a rainforest adventure to me. Next up we move into a little I Don't Want to Know to build off NGBA with the handclaps and jubilant energy. After that, a little hypnotic mood change with Gold Dust Woman in the 3-spot. Love it there. Songbird follows it up with an emotional gut punch from McVie. Always felt like Dreams was too early in the album and You Make Loving Fun was too late. They make up the end of side A and build up the sweet spot of singles in my new sequence. Go Your Own Way is a killer Side B opening so I'm going with that. Oh Daddy brings this back down for awhile, then they pick back up with Don't Stop. Second Hand News flows so well after that track and makes way for a riveting emotional end to the album with Silver Springs coming next. Absolutely love The Chain ending things off on a furious and jaded note with the band bringing it so that goes last.
1. Never Going Back Again
2. I Don't Want to Know
3. Gold Dust Woman
4. Songbird
5. You Make Loving Fun
6. Dreams
7. Go Your Own Way
8. Oh Daddy
9. Don't Stop
10. Second Hand News
11. Silver Springs
12. The Chain
You guys should seriously check out the Beach boys Feel Flows box set and resequence Sunflower and Surf's Up with the bonus tracks. The amount of great unreleased songs is unbelievable, and there really was a missed opportunity to showcase Surf's Up as an all-time great album on par with Pet Sounds.
I like Kram's concept.
Aww man...watching this made me realise how perfectly sequenced Rumours already is !
No
@@TastesLikeMusic haha...I love a well reasoned comeback! Big fan of the channel 👍
I'm with Joe on this one. Drop Oh Daddy or Sugar Daddy or Who's Your Daddy and replace it with Silver Springs. However then you've got 3 Stevie songs in a row and two slow ones in a row so ... 1. The Chain 2. Silver Springs 3. You Make Loving Fun 4. I Don't Wanna Know 5. Gold Dust Woman.
that was fun ! albums i suggest you could do in that serie ( great music , frustrating sequencing) : Blonde on blonde , Led Zeppelin IV , Let it Be , OK computer
I definitely agree regarding Blonde on Blonde, I think Jason mentioned once he'd like Rainy Day Women to close the album, but then what do you do with Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands? And do you leave the murderer's row of tracks from 3 to 6 they way it is or do you spread them out over the album.
certainly Let it be, Led Zep IV is fine for me (Houses of the Holy probably could do with some work), as is OK Computer. "Songs in the key of life"'s sequencing is messy too.
@@toonhkuitjes6382 Songs is the one I was thinking of. The side with Talk with God is real slowwww.
@@toonhkuitjes6382 I've just checked my CD copy of "Songs in the Key of Life" and it does seem odd that "Sir Duke" and "I Wish" are next to each other on disc 1 and "As" and "Another Star"are next to each other on disc 2 as these are the upbeat 'pop' tracks and probably should be more spread. Looking at the Wiki entry, on the original vinyl "Sir Duke" ends side 1 and "I Wish" starts side 2 of the first disc. This would still mean that they would be consecutive, if you were listening to the whole album in order.
I really liked Kramzers list and I thought Jason’s list was interesting as well. I kind of agree with Joe in that Oh Daddy doesn’t really do anything for me compared to the rest of the album, however I am going to keep it on. Also I don’t know if this is an error or some weird pressing I have but on the cassette version I have second hand news and i don’t wanna know are switched which is interesting.
My list:
A:
1. The Chain
2. You Make Loving Fun
3. Second Hand News
4. Never Going Back Again
5. I Don’t Wanna Know
6. Oh Daddy
B:
1. Gold Dust Woman
2. Silver Springs
3. Go Your Own Way
4. Dreams
5. Songbird
6. Don’t Stop
I've been waiting for something like this!!! 3rd favorite album of all time! You should re-arrange Toys In The Attic!
I love the sequencing but I think maybe:
Side A:
1. Second Hand News
2. I Don't Want To Know
3. You Make Loving Fun
4. Never Going Back Again
5. Go Your Own Way
6. Silver Springs
Side B:
1. The Chain
2. Dreams
3. Don't Stop
4. Oh, Daddy
5. Gold Dust Woman (Cross fades with...)
6. Songbird
You guys are amazing
No, you are
@@TastesLikeMusic No, we all are.
Hey....! Thanks Jason/Joe/"Kramzer" (in that order...😉🙄)...old email account, maybe I'll find out how to switch it... Been watching since it was solo, as good as it/you was/were, your interactions are priceless (although I must say, somehow sometimes the digs Jason receives bring out the defender in me...just, you know, sometimes it laid on a bit thick....) Okay, if I still have your collective attention a year and a paragraph later: Nick Cave... There, I said it.
seriously, I tell everyone about you guys....thanks so much
I omitted a "gets" between "it" and "laid" (English teacher...🙄)
That intro scared the shit out of me. I think Kramzer's version, might a good for someone going through a hard time. The dark songs can be a reminder that you're not alone, and then the light side you can be reminded that you'll get through things, and move on. I might try listening to it in that order some day.
Love or hate Don't Stop, you gotta admit it sends an important message, and I love that two of you put it and the very end as a send off
Fortunately we can program our own iTunes track lists for our iPods. I do that for some records, most recently Let It Be
"Don't Stop" was a big hit when Rumours came out. I'm not in love with it either, but considering the fact that Debbie Boone had the best selling single of the year, it was a perfect contender to fit in with Billboard's hot 100 at the time.
I always felt that the Pink Floyd album "More" which is my least favorite of the 60s & 70s period PF actually has some fine songs. I think the current sequence makes it less then it could be. IE, it could benefit quite a bit with a re-arranegement of the tracks and maybe some of them segueing into each other.
Surprisingly, I totally agree with Joe.
The way I would change it is that back to back songs wouldn't be by same singer (except for the multi singer ones, and I'd add Silver Springs, so I'd go:
Side A
1. The Chain - all 3 take their share here, but LB is the prominent
2. You Make Loving Fun - need something peppy here, and it's the most peppy non LB song, with McVie on lead
3. Dreams - Nicks lead
4. Never Going Back Again - almost a LB solo song
5. I Don't Wanna Know - again need something peppy here - Mainly Nicks with some LB
6. Songbird - another somewhat solo song, this one from McVie
Side B
1. Go Your Own Way - Fastest song on the album, so good second side opener
2. Silver Springs - Nicks song that would have been good on the original
3. Oh Daddy - yeah the worst song by far of the 12, I'd keep it though, McVie lead
4. Second Hand News - time to get peppy again, LB lead
5. Gold Dust Woman - closed the original album, actually my favorite Nicks tune on the album
6. Don't Stop - seems to me this should have closed the album originally, it's peppy and has both McVie and LB sharing leads
I've never minded the sequence but I do think Kramzer's dark side/ light side would be cool.
I never thought I'd say these words, but I agree completely with Joe. Swap in "Silver Springs" for "Oh Daddy" and leave the remainder of the album intact.
You should do a list on the most famous re-sequencing in rock history: the American versions of the early Beatles albums, from Meet the Beatles to Revolver.
My first Beatles album listen was the US Rubber Soul and after hearing “I’ve Just Seen A Face” open that, hearing the song placed 11th on Help! seemed super awkward. If I’d resequence any Beatles album it might be that one.
@@ThePhysicalillusion I prefer the US Rubber Soul because of its folk rock tone.
Damn. At 10:29, you can really see the hatred in Jason’s eyes when he proclaims his hatred for Don’t Stop. The whites in his eyes had a venomous gleam in them and I actually had to take a step back from my screen until he pacified it by immediately afterwards giggling. Holy shit, dude.
The sequence is a core part of the album, so I usually see it as untouchable unless they left off tracks
I actually quite like the sequencing of the original, though "Silver Springs" definitely should've been on the album over basically any of Christine McVie's songs. I'll think about it and see if I can improve it though -- or at least imagine how it could have looked if "Silver Springs" were part of the original plan.
Christine is the most enjoyable member of the band for me. Best singer and best songwriter
Over the years, Christine has become my favorite member of Fleetwood Mac.
@@TheDigitalGramophoneI don't dislike Christine in general, but I do think she has the weaker songs on Rumours.
Ok ..I’ll have a go ..
1. You Make Loving Fun :
Upbeat opening which I think also establishes the sound of most of the record in a way Second Hand News doesn’t.
2. I Don’t Want to Know : continues upbeat sound even if things getting a bit more complex lyrically .
3. Second Hand News : I think works and fits in well at this point maintaining the pace of the record . Lyrically becoming obviously more cynical.
4. Gold Dust Woman : Stevie appears …
5. Go Your Own Way : Defiant Buckingham
6. Oh Daddy : end side one on a quiet , reflective note .
Side 2:
1. The Chain : the drama continues…
2. Dreams : Stevie makes her definitive statement ..
3. Never Going Back Again : Buckingham responds
4. Don’t Stop: rousing anthem ..but is it a final desperate attempt at optimism ?
5. Songbird : low key but I think effective reflective ending..
I'd be in favour of getting rid of "Second Hand News" altogether! I'm of an age where it inevitably reminds me of "MMMBop".
@@simonvaughan6017 I like 'second Hand but Hanson's 'MMMBop is good but so is 'Where's the Love which reminds of the New Radicals "You get what you give". If only the New Radicals continued . A good enough album with 'Someday We'll Know and then Gregg Alexander wrote 'Game of Love which Michele Branch and Santana covered. I like to hear Santana contained and not doing long solos, but that is just me.
i honestly think that the track listing for this album is perfect as is. i think the chain could work as a great closer but gold dust woman feels like it was out there for a reason. there’s a sort of weight behind it that i can’t really describe. overall, i do understand the track listings, but specially thought that kramzer’s had some neat choices. good video. me like.
Here's my stab at it.
1. Second Hand News
2. Gold Dust Woman
3. The Chain
4. Dreams
5. Never Going Back Again
6. Oh Daddy
7. I Don't Wanna Know
8. You Make Loving Fun
9. Don't Stop
10. Songbird
11. Go Your Own Way
12. Silver Springs
My resequencing is like Jason's, except that I would remove Dreams all together, I would also remove Gold Dust Woman and substitute it with Silver Springs.
I appreciate that you even responded a bit to my old man ramblings. Despite my ribbings...the variety of your tastes is incredible. I am really curious how you go from being born in what 1980s? 90s? and then discovering, the best 70s bands..I don't like anything from before I was born (1957) but wouldn't want to look for it even if it theoretically existed. Don't we mostly stick with what we listened to when we first discovered music (for me in late 60s and The Monkees on TV)
Doesn’t matter when you were born. The best music is always in the 60s and 70s. I’m just grateful I recognized that. - Joe
I agree with Joe on this one ☝️ all you need to do is replace oh Daddy with silver springs…. Although it may not fit into the single album back in the day
I 100% agree The Chain needs to open and Don't Stop should close. The rest is definitely up for debate. I would also include Silver Springs somehow.
I think they are great as they are... But I would add Silver Springs maybe at the end of the album or just before Songbird
I liked Kramz's idea, at first, but once sequencing started don't quite see it. "Chain" is IMO not a good opener; not because of length, but because of 'Jam-like" quality of song. Interesting topic. Would not have 'I don't want to know" and 'Silver Springs" back to back because it is the lyrically the same key line used twice by Stevie. However 'Silver Springs" is to me the most beautiful song FM ever did, and don't understand why it did not make the cut.
I'd open with 'Gold Dust Woman" - killer opener;
2 - Second Hand News;
3 - You Make Loving Fun;
4 - I don't want to know";
5 - Don't Stop"
and close side 1 with "Dreams";
open side 2 with 'Go your own way"
2 - Silver Springs;
3 - Songbird;
4 - Never Goin Back"
and close album with "the Chain"
I can get behind “Don’t Stop” closing Rumours for sure, especially since it worked so well on that spot on The Dance live album with the USC marching band. I don’t mind the sequencing at all the way it is though.
Sequel to this episode: Editing Tusk down to a regular length album
Or any double album really. Maybe that’s it’s own series
good idea for a series, yes. Plenty of discussion to be had for sure. I have Tusk on double album and then on single CD and they have a shorter version of Sara to make it fit. Sacrilege really. There are a few albums where they did this, or leave a whole song off like on The Cure's Kiss me kiss me kiss me..
Then there is the opposite such as Brothers in Arms which had shorter versions of the songs on the single LP version. I bought a double LP of that album not long ago with the extended versions.
come to think of it, another idea would be to amalgamate two successive, patchy albums into a single masterpiece. They could do this for a few late 70's Queen releases for example.
@@toonhkuitjes6382 that’s right I have that Cute album! There’s a little disclaimer in the back stating the song ‘Hey You’ was cut to fit the album on a single cd. I still have no idea what hat song sounds like lol
@@toonhkuitjes6382 I used to have the CD with the truncated version of Sara. I agree it was sacrilege.
Or editing Use your Illusion I and II into one double album.
Joe speaks at a normal pace when I watch it at 1.5x.
I like Jason's sequence a lot, but I would cheat and add Silver Springs between Songbird and Don't Stop. I love fixing/perfecting album track listings and really enjoy your "Resequencer" series. I wonder where you three stand on the two big Beatles' questions: add Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane to Sqt. Pepper's like George Martin wanted, and make the White Album 1 album instead of two.
Actually George Martin didn't want to add Strawberry Fields Forever and Penny Lane he pulled them from the running to make a single. However he did want the White Album to be one record. I would drop Within You Without You and put Strawberry Penny there. Then drop Getting Better and put It's All too Much in it's place. My White Album must include Revolution 9. I love it for it's sure audacity therefore I could never whittle the White down to one.
I think endingbthe album with Songbird works - nice quiet ending
Love this album, but I HATE Don't Stop. I don't really care about the sequencing, but switch out Don't Stop for Silver Springs, and it's perfect.
This is great, much needed. The other worst-sequenced classic album is Bridge Over Troubled Water. BTW - Jason, you didn't defend Three Dog Night hard enough. I think their singing was Vegas-y weak, but their backing band was excellent - "Out in the Country" beats Traffic at their folk/jazz game, and "Family of Man" rocks hard. Also, Harmony is a strong pop rock album.
Out in the Country is my favorite song by 3-Dog and was written by Paul Williams. But Traffic was good too and did the best version of 'Heaven is In Your Mind (over 3-Dog). The song 'One and 'Easy to be Hard are great and the song 'Family of Man good.
It was great to see Neil Young's 'Loner being covered but 3-Dog but they shouldn't have .. too much jumping the shark. It should be sung by one male Loner only or maybe Janis Ian or Chrissie Hynde? Ritchie Haven's and Randy Bachman's 'Loner are good. Neil's version and the live with CSN on tv - was great.
I agree with you a out Bridge over troubled water.. Poorly sequenced, top-loaded, fizzles out.
Here's my Rumours sequence:
1) Second Hand News - Fade in is awesome (like "Eight Days a Week") and the song announces the album may sound sunny, but there's tension underneath - the album's a bit of a downer, in all!
2) You Make Loving Fun - Continues the vibe of the opener, but sounds a little cynical - not you make loving great, just fun
3) Dreams - Ah, here comes the doubts and darkness
4) Go Your Own Way - Lindsey's intense response to Stevie's hypnotic criticism
5) Songbird - Christine cools things down. (BTW - This is my least favorite song on the album, just a bit too predictable in form. But I still like it.)
6) The Chain - Round out Side One with this build and explosion. "Chain...keep us together!" to the run-out groove.
7) Don't Stop - Another less favorite song, but it has an undeniable poppy energy. Get the second side rolling with a head of steam.
8) Silver Springs - Back to a bit of intensity and moodiness.
9) Never Going Back Again - A gentle, more soothing folk sound.
10) I Don't Want to Know - Some bright sunshine. I song I was slow to like, but I love it now.
11) Oh Daddy - Bluesy and sexy. It's like drinking in the late hours.
12) Gold Dust Woman - Great freak-out ending!
So I didn't change all that much in the end, but at least the uptempo stuff is at the beginning of both sides and the end of side 1. Of our three heroes, I liked Jason's approach best.
@@kevinmcardle4087 I normally keep quiet on Bridge Overboard because I only know a few songs that I don't like. I just don't like "The Boxer “lie-la-lie” is annoying. And the whole song is so boring, I don't care to even look up lyrics which i do with many many songs. Not moving and I am a sensitive guy; though most on here wouldn't think I was. I love S&G. I don't feel a lot for Bridge Over T Water.. the song. Celia is just bad. Maybe you know a good song from BOTW, I am afraid to go back into those waters.
@@archieleechjb John - I agree with you down the line but for "Oh Daddy but just now I listened again. I really neglected it but not a strong song to me. But I won't be so easily swayed but Joe again!
You were spot on in description to see the underlying tension and moodiness of many songs. I even think "Don't Stop" is a little down because there is a "remembrance of things past" and Clinton's theme song for a campaign (not that I even disliked him back in the day).
I honestly think it's perfect just the way it is. But i swear i had a strong feeling that jason didn't like the sequencing hahaha
Rumors Has all major keys on side one (happy, light, positive) and the last two songs are in the same key; side two is all minor keys -dark brooding sad (except I Don't Want To Know stuck in the middle) -and the last two songs are in the same key, also...
Except! The lyrics are the reverse- the happy lyrics "Loving Fun" and "Chain" and "Daddy" "Gold Dust" are in the sad keys; and the depressing stuff is in the happy major keys ...not surprising that such a big hit with the masses would be ass backwards in some way...
Do bands always determine the song order on albums? How much of a role does the producer or record company play? Same question for picking which songs are released as singles.
Album should start with Don't Stop then Go Your Own Way. Final song should be The Chain
exactly my thoughts. The rest can go in any other way, although I would say Songbird end of side 1 too.
Original is the best. When bands make an album they know what they're doing better than any of us. We can have opinions, but "best" is what it is or it wouldn't be the great album it is. Some deep philosophy there (it is what it is or else it wouldn't be..I've thought about re-sequencing my kids but I changed my mind)
I think Kramzer had a great sequence in mind..would u consider a listography of Shuggie Otis..great guitar player!!
Interesting resequencing by all. Like the Dark/Light idea, but I'd flip it and have side A be Light.
Kramser essentially turned the album into Bookends by Simon and Garfunkel
I like these re-order videos. I don't know how I would do this but I would definitely end with The Chain. It's such a dramatic song, I think it would just resonate more as the final number.
1) I like what Joe is thinking in regards to removing "Oh Daddy" for "Silver Springs" and leaving the album otherwise as is. "Oh Daddy" always felt like the least enjoyable song on the record. I'm not 100% sure "Silver Springs" is all that much better, though. I've listened to it 2 or 3 times, as opposed to "Oh Daddy," which I'm sure I've heard 100 times.
2) I like Kramzer's idea of completely rearranging it - but it veers into Jason's dislike of having 2 different sides of things. (That is, he never likes one side "rock" and another side "acoustic." Not sure if this is the same thing.) "The Chain" is a good opener, but the sides are unbalanced in that all of Lindsey's songs are on the 2nd side.
3) I like Jason's starting side 2 off with "Gold Dust Woman." I like the 1-2 punch of "Second Hand News" and "I Don't Want To Know."
4) Let's see if I can come up with something using what I like from all of yours:
Side 1:
1) The Chain
2) Second Hand News
3) I Don't Want To Know - this is a great 1-2-3 punch to start off the record
4) Never Going Back Again
5) Silver Springs
6) Songbird
Side 2:
1) Gold Dust Woman - like Jason, I think it's a good opener
2) Don't Stop
3) Go Your Own Way - shouldn't this song and "Dreams" be back to back?
4) Dreams
5) You Make Loving Fun
I don't know if it works. Side 2 looks awesome. One strict McVie song per side. I like the opening 1-2-3 punch of side 1. Songbird is a good side-closer. "You Make Loving Fun" ends the album on a happy note. The record is songwriter-balanced per side.
My judgment? It's probably best the way it was originally released.
Concerts I attended in the 70s
Beach Boys (3)
Genesis
Chicago
Elton John (2, but only because he was my best friend's favorite..I never liked him)
Neil Young
Yes
Kansas
Heart
Hall and Oates
Doobie Brothers (I don't believe any mention of them during 70s?)
can't remember rest lol
Fleetwood Mac inspired an idea for a Page 3...bands that evolved the most over time with new members (listen to FMs 1st album with Peter Green)
I like what they used to do in concerts: ending with Don't Stop and then Christine alone with Songbird. Could have worked in the album
If you want to reference that lyric call it 'The Dark and the Light', it sounds better and more to the point than that full lyric quote.
Nah. U need to damn it.
Good records are journeys. I think the sequencing is fine. There’s an argument to be made that if the record had been sequenced some other way it wouldn’t have been so successful. You guys are crazy. But keep on doing what you’re doing. Always entertaining.
Fun video…would love to see a listography of this band
Coming January 2022
I love this album and have always considered it near perfect and have never had an issue with the sequence so this discussion seems odd to me. Interesting to hear your options but frankly when i listen to this album it is cover to cover as is and love every second. This from a guy who is far more of a hard rock guy
The best sequencing usually employs contrast from track to track…slow, fast…or dark, light, ….loud, soft etc etc. Beatles were masters
I prefer a nice flow gradually shifting moods over several tracks with occasional stark contrast. -Jason
Kudos for taking on this sacred cow, guys!
I can find myself most in Jason’s sequencing, although I happen to think Don’t Stop is one of their best songs. I don’t mind the original sequencing, though.
Silver Springs feels like one ballad too many.
However, do you think something can be done about The Most Poorly Sequenced Album Of All Time?
(read: ELO’s DiscoVery).
Hmm we just recorded ELO and I think Out of the Blue is much worsely sequenced. - Joe
I need to get back to that one.
Not wild about the sequencing of album #2, I give you that…
Still, ending an album with Don’t Bring Me Down is like skateboarding on the I-90.
Good idea Kramz. I don't know a lot of Fleetwood Mac but they are a good band. I believe in DNA reengineering, resequencing, in Beatles (not what Lennon sang) and DNA splicing which requires cleavage and Stevie's got that. And I would clone one musician from one band into another band to make for better music - for me , he laughs insanely; for me! I would want the best songs first on any record, is this so simple and radical? So I am taking great liberties rearranging, excluding much more than the awful "oh daddy" (please don't worry I am not adding John Lennon's "Mother"). And I am for using other records of Fleetwood Mac, including earlier and later solo songs.
Go Your Own Way
Dreams
Gypsy
Landslide
Never Going Back Again
Soul Drifter ("and I'm off to see the world" Buckingham)
Second Hand News
Songbird
Hypnotized (Bob Welsh with FM)
Stop Draggin' my Heart around with Petty (make a meal of some bright-eyed kid - I thought it was at first "make a meat" not meal of the kid)
Over My head
Big Love
I think I'm in Trouble ( Buckingham solo "been so long since I held you I've forgotten what love is for")
Countdown (Buckingham)
Little Lies
I am not saying I don't like other songs from Rumours but I just went my own way taking from the premise here. I gave my favorite Fleetwood Mac and individual solo songs (mostly of Buckingham) though more than half of FM songs I don't know, I guess? Tusk seems not very good - but I only know a couple of songs, Sara being a good song.
I'm happy if I never hear Don't Stop again. The rest of the ordering is fine with me. Replace Don't Stop with Silver Springs, and it's good. But I do understand that Don't Stop is quality pop, so I'd leave it somewhere on the album. Maybe before gold Dust woman.
Ok, here goes. This was DIFFICULT. I made it a 12-track album. My first 4 songs really don't make much sense, but had to go first, because the last 8 make a lot of sense to me. I start with "You Make Loving Fun". A new relationship to start the album fresh. Optimism. The next three, eh, are unsettling with "Dreams", "Oh, Daddy", and "Gold Dust Woman". I'm thinking of the band here as a whole, like ONE BIG relationship if that makes sense. So the Optimism of the opener quickly turns into a bit of doubt, weariness and darkness. "I Don't Want To Know" is 5th. Still upbeat, but now questioning, and denial sets in. The next 4 tracks are an argument back and forth between the two lovers in "Go Your Own Way", "Second Hand News", "Silver Springs", and finally, "Never Going Back". But then, acceptance at last with looking at the bigger picture in "The Chain". "Don't Stop" of course is a great closer in it's full band sung look to the future. But the true ending is in the healing, gorgeous, forgiveness of "Songbird".
What do ya think? (Hey, at least I tried, Joe....)😆✌🙏.
It’s okay, but I think you need to get a Lindsey track in there a little earlier. -Jason
Sorry Kramser, would never make it to side two with that sequencing. I quite like the sequencing. I would probably switch Dreams with You Make Loving Fun and remove Oh Daddy. 10 songs/perfect album.
and changing the title??? goodness me!!
Totally agree the Rumours sequencing is lousy. Particularly side 1. Especially "Don't Stop/Go Your Own Way/Songbird". Its weird because in Ken Calliet's book he says they put a lot of thought into sequencing the album. They should NOT have left Silver Springs off. There was plenty of "room". Todd Rundgren had already produced LP's with nearly 10 minutes more music per side. I like Kram's order the best. I think its just about perfect. I was thinking "Songbird" as a closer but now that I think about it, Don't Stop is a great closer. Personally, I love "Oh Daddy". Its very spooky and atmospheric. Plus as the least played track on the album, I have the least fatigue with it. I do agree "Don't Stop" is probably the weakest track on the LP. "You Make Loving Fun" is my favorite track.
Yeah. But even as a huge Todd fan I can admit that those albums don’t sound as good as they could. That’s why he included “play loud” in the liner notes. He knew he was sacrificing low end. -Jason
I really hate that cowbell on Gold Dust Woman. So I'd swap that out for pretty much anything. Otherwise, I like the jumbled nature of the album and lean more towards Joe's take on just leaving it be. But still... That f***ing cowbell! OMG! 🤕
I like the running order as it is, but like Joe, I'd substitute Silver Springs with "Oh Daddy" or "I Don't Want to Know".
What was the other resequencer, REM Out Of Time?
Yep
Interesting sequences. The two different ones would be an improvement.
Oh Daddy has to stay on the album . McVie’s vocals are great on it .
If you’re going to turf a song , let it be Don’t Stop .
Thanks !
I think Rush’s “Moving Pictures” might be a good candidate for this series
Say whaaaaa?!?!?
This is very presumptious of youse three.. but I liked it.
You mean yinz three. We ain’t from Philly.
Remembering how many great tracks were penned by buckingham 😡. Still angry about his termination
Lindsey was the heart and soul of Mac, as shown by solo records too. I think he was trying to mastermind the direction at times but ironically he was canned when Nicks “saw the possibility of remaking the band more in the Stevie Nicks vein". Lindsey said. "More mellow and kind of down, giving her more chances to do the kind of talking she does onstage.” Stevie has so many "rooms" she needs to cover in her talk and song.
Both times he left (or was terminated) they had to get two people to replace him. I have zero interest in a Fleetwood Mac without him at this point. Especially considering his playing/singing and songwriting are still at such a high level.
One problem with Kramzer's resequencing is that Side 1, apart from the opener, is all female (Nicks and McVie) (and the three solo-sung Buckingham tracks are all on the second side). Are the female songs the dark ones and Buckingham's the lighter?
I don't know if you've done a "songs that rip off other songs" video; but you might notice that Hanson's "mmmbop" is pretty much lifted from Second Hand News, especially when Buckingham's "bam bam bam" bridge and fadeout...
Of course there would be the danger of bringing Hanson to the public's consciousness which might be better left undone...
Unfortunately, such a video would work best if you could play the examples ("He's So Fine"/"My Sweet Lord" style) and I would more than half suspect that that would be a copyright infringement nightmare for you..
The fact that the Hansons weren't born yet in 1977 would be enough to save them; and Fleetwood Mac made enough on that single to not need to go after the Hanson's piggy banks, I imagine..
Beatles - Let It Be, Resequencer?
Drop “Oh Daddy” for sure
But I like the dark/light concept
But seriously “Oh Daddy” is a skip every time on an otherwise unskippable album
Obviously I always had the wrong album - Silver Springs? I only ever had 11 tracks....
Do we still need a Fleetwood Mac Listography as it seems the result is already manifest? Rumours is a good album but neither the best of 1977 nor of that band.
I’m sure there’s plenty of crazy people who will pick one of the early albums as their winners. Some Tusks, too I reckon. - Joe
@@TastesLikeMusic The world is full of stupid people who still think that the best movies and the best music was NOT made in Hollywood. Those happy ignorants will never learn...
The first remaster of "Rumours" did include "Silver Springs" on CD - appearing where side one ends. "Rumours" IS their best album, but not my favorite. That goes to "Tusk".
@@roxannewalsh what is your fav mac album ? mine is future games!!
@@bengalgangster This will have to wait until the FM Listography...it is not one featuring an overpaid tambourine player and it is not Future Games (which is my #5).
For me all 10/10 songs except for Oh Daddy (9/10). I would agree with Joe in order to get a perfect 10/10 album... but I won't get rid of Oh Daddy
Rank grateful dead albums pls
#triggered
I wouldn’t change much about the album. The only thing I would change is I would replace “I Don’t Wanna Know” with “Silver Springs”. I always thought “I Don’t Wanna Know” is Stevie’s weakest song on the album.
when are u guys doing a black eyed peas listography?
February 31st - kram
@@TastesLikeMusic YES
You guys probably won't see this but I just have to vent. I have four top 20 bands that I don't THINK ever passed any of your lips to date ( I apologize if I am wrong). Here goes: KANSAS (best American prog band by far), AMERICA (except for Joe hating HWNN), Athlete, and Hall and Oates (Jason...they were so closely aligned with Todd...not even you?). Some others in my top 50: Swing Out Sister, Future Islands, Beach House, Tennis, Churches, Two Door Cinema Club, and Phantogram
We’ve mentioned Tennis and Churches before I think in the 2010s videos. I actually forgot about Point of Know Return in our 77 SOTY video. It would have been very close to overthrowing Barracuda. - Joe
Jason and I have talked about beach house a lot and like them greatly.
I do not like kansas very much at all - kram
@@TastesLikeMusic I really don't get that. If you like Yes and Genesis you MUST like Kansas, so go listen to them for homework tonight young man!
@@GeneBolmarcichEsq no.
Steve Walsh one of the best singers of all time Pretty darn good on the keys). Musicianship equals Yes and early Genesis. Kerry Livgren one of best prog composers ever. We all have opinions and that's what makes the world go round. I love your show and wish you more subscribers each month. If all music lovers of my age would discover you, you'd be one of the top UA-cam channels. I wish I knew everyone my age lol. Appreciate the occasional new discovery like Beach Boys 2.0 - The Explorers Club (BB is my fav band of all time)
Nice to have Resequencer back. Been too long. I actually like the way Rumours is sequenced for the most part. And I would never, ever, ever add Silver Springs. Ever. Although I like how the live version (The Dance) was a hit in the 90s. The song having 20 years of drama attached to it added to it. Having said that, here's my crack at it-
Side 1
Gold Dust Woman
Dreams
Second Hand News
You Make Loving Fun
I Don't Want to Know
Songbird
Side 2
Oh Daddy
Never Going Back Again
Go Your Own Way
Don't Stop
The Chain
Have you guys considered posting episodes as a podcast?
Are you calling us ugly?
@@ryankramzer1256 Ha ha. No, just so it would be easier to listen.
We will probably do this someday when we upgrade our audio situation. -Jason
Hard to sequence this album since it's telling three stories - Lindsey vs Stevie, Christine breaking up with John & finding a new dude & will the band survive. I think it needs Silver Springs so here it goes:
Side One
1. Don't Stop (chipper song that sets a tone that all is great, the illusion of which is about to be blown away)
2. I Don't Want to Know
3. Never Going Back Again
4. Gold Dust Woman (2-4 1st act of the Lindsey/Stevie saga)
5. Oh Daddy (Christine recognizes the tension and wonders if the band will survive)
6. Silver Springs (false ending to the saga)
Side Two
7. Second Hand News (nothing is over until Lindsey says it over)
8. You Make Loving Fun (no good place to put this, Christine is moving on with life no matter what happens)
9. Dreams (Stevie's final word)
10. Go Your Own Way (Lindsey has the last word)
11. Songbird (false ending - the songbird will keep singing)
Hidden Unlisted track after 20 seconds of silence
The Chain - sums up the whole album, we all hate each other but we're bound together forever whatever the cost... until we fire Lindsey because we want more money.
Future suggestions: Prince - Parade (great songs but awful sequencing), Let It Be, Pet Sounds (replace Sloop John B with Little Girl I Once Knew). Obscured by Clouds - Pink Floyd.
Not sure about the proposed changes to this iconic album..
One burning question... Or have I got the vinyl format completely wrong?
If it is on a cd it probably doesn't matter as much, but if you don't particularly like a song, why would you put it at the end of the album ?
There are, I feel, 4 extremely important tracks to a vinyl. The first, as you need a strong hook to get your attention, feeding your curiosity. The last track on the 1st side needs to whet your appetite for flipping the vinyl over for the B side. Next the opening song of side 2 for the same reason as kicking off side 1, finally the closing of the album needs to be strong and memorable, as it's most likely to be the one that sticks in your brain. That's my theory, anyway and on that note please check out Making Movies by Dire Straits. Please rearrange this album and hide the god awful last track.. Les Boys!
Many thanks 👍
Joe, the only issue I have with your track listing (and I agree with you that Oh, Daddy is the weakest track) is that you're closing the record with three consecutive Stevie Nicks tracks. I feel a band with 3 excellent lead singers would likely steer away from that.
Good point. - Joe
