This sounds kind of stupid in the back of my head, but I always wanted Fatal Frame to bring in a ghost-like merchant that interacts with the main character, like the merchant in Resident Evil 4.

Btw the rituals always fail because of the emotional state of the sacrifices. It's necessary for the sacrifices to be in a mostly balanced state to work. So they always fail because of the drama beforehand. And that's why the games mostly end with the sacrifices again. The games are like: this is how the world works - we have thin veils to hell and people need to get them in check to stay safe. Many are willing to sacrifice themselves for the sake of others, but it isn't easy and you can't be forced to become a sacrifice, because it also wouldn't work. It's just how it is. Dramatic and harsh, but also beautiful (or cathartic?), because it shows how people can choose to be empathetic enough to help others even in death.
Add: Those events in the games aren't happening by "sheer luck". Those are buddhism and shintoism concepts in the games (getting reborn, several ghosts of yourself exsisting, being more empathetic to ghosts also meaning being more negatively influenced by ghosts than safe, yadda yadda yadda) rooted in japanese culture.

A couple of things about FF2’s story:
Sae was not the Remaining twin. She was supposed to be the sacrificed one all along.
Itsuki and Mutsuki’s ritual failed because they loved each other too much. For the Crimson Sacrifice Ritual to succeed, there has to be some degree of resentment between the twins (in fact, this is somewhat kickstarted by way of the designated future butterfly twin typically being born weaker and even sickly compared to the elder twin, implied to mean that they resent their sibling for their better health on at least a subconscious level), and there was no resentment between the Tachibana twins despite Itsuki alluding to Mutsuki being physically weak enough that he would need to carry him out of the village.
There’s a recurring motif of Heaven and Earth in FF2, and the twin sacrifice is a major part of it. The sacrificed twin becomes a crimson butterfly and protects the village from Heaven, whereas the Remaining twin stays on Earth to act as a guardian; with each sacrifice, a new Twin Deities statue is put up to honor them and signify their protection. Not sure why there are so few statues compared to how many butterflies we see, but maybe they’re outside the area we explore in the game, which is where the four families live as opposed to the entire population of the town.
Yae and Ryozo are returning characters from FF1. Yae lost her memory due to shock when she found her way back to the torii gate that marked the entrance to All Gods/Minakami Village and found it was all gone, and Ryozo, who had promised Itsuki that he’d help the girls escape, found her weeping and apologizing there and took her away. Eventually they married, had Mikoto, moved into Himuro Mansion, and fell victim to the ghosts therein. In other words, Miku and Mafuyu are direct descendants of the Kurosawa family!
Sae actually possesses Mayu, which is why she acts the way she does and goes where she goes. Mayu has her own unresolved issues and insecurities but she’s also channeling Sae’s, and the locations where Mio finds her sister relate back to Sae’s own final weeks of life. For example, when Mayu is locked in the Tachibana House, that’s because Sae would have been kept there during her and Yae’s year-long preparation for the CSR (the Tachibana and Kiryu Houses are the Twin Houses; they would be separated into the two and only allowed to visit each other via the Earth and Heaven Bridges that connect them).
In the Director’s Cut, the new ending has Yae’s teenage spirit, which apparently split off from the rest of her soul due to the trauma (which could explain why Yae is described as having such fragile health in FF1), hitching a ride with Mio without truly possessing her and meeting up with Sae again for a final ritual to seal off the Hellish Abyss for good. This is a non-canonical ending, but it’s essentially a HEA one for the Amakura twins.

Itsuki is the name of the white haired boy, and the reason why the ritual failed with him and his brother is because they weren't able to bond during the strangulation. The simple reason being is that Itsuki didn't want to kill him and already had lingering doubts about the ritual. When the ritual fails the surviving twin is called "The Remaining" and their hair turns white, The Remaining are generally seen as pariahs by the villagers due to them failing the ritual. At 1:20:49 you say that that the twin with the dolls' ritual failed but the Kiryuu twins, (which is the twin and the doll) strangling ritual succeeded. What you overlooked is that there was another set of twins that was supposed to do the ritual *before* Itsuki and Mutsuki's appointed time to do the ritual themselves, *however* these set of twins, which were girls decided to escape and runaway before the time came to do the ritual. They formed a plan to sneak out and run to the shrine at the top of the long winding staircase, there is a secret passage in the inside of that shrine that can be opened by doing the last family crest puzzle inside the old tree. When the twins managed to get inside the passageway an earthquake had erupted and the passageway caved in on them, crushing both of them to death. This is why Itsuki and Mutsuki had to do their ritual sooner than the eloted time they were supposed to. When trying to piece the lore together and categorize the events, it's best to learn the house names of the families that were involved with the ritual, each house holds some sort of significance as well as some sort of hierarchy within the village. The top spot of the village hierarchy is the Kurosawa House, this is where Yae and Sae hail from since their father is the ritual master. House Kiryuu is the Dollmakers last name and house, that's where Akane and Azami hail from, the twin and the doll. The Tachibana House is where Itsuki (white haired boy), Mutsuki (his twin brother), and their little sister Chitose hail from, I don't remember or couldn't find out the significance of the Tachibana's role in the ritual or their importance to the hierarchy, but they are one of the most important along with the Kiryuu House. There is a fourth House that I can't remember the name of that is part of the village's hierarchy, but they are considered to not be as important as the first 3, I think that house is the first building you go in when you see the woman disappear into.

They didn’t know Reika’s body was still impaled. I mean, she’s walking around in the shrine as though she completely woke up or the ritual wasn’t completed, and nobody had been able to get inside the Chamber of Thorns in ages, thanks to the Miasma it contained and the ghosts and the curse itself. Plus the normal failsafe-skinning the Tattooed Priestess who couldn’t stay asleep, sending her flayed mess of a body across the Rift, and enshrining her tattooed skin to contain the pain it holds-wasn’t exactly a viable option anymore. Plus the other methods Yashuu, the Kuze family head, used to keep Reika contained after she killed Kaname didn’t exactly work. She had the original Kuze Shrine enclosed in a new shrine (the Rift Shrine) then an even bigger, more elaborate one after that proved ineffective (the Shrine of Sleep), complete with the shrine carpenters walled up as human pillars to further strengthen it. Along with this, she first had the other Handmaidens impale her granddaughter Amane (as punishment for breaking the taboo of letting a man in the Chamber of Thorns), then ordered Hisame to impale Shigure and Minamo before she herself died, and Hisame “went to sleep forever” as the last living soul in the shrine. This served to seal the Kuze Shrine into dreams, where theoretically Reika could do no harm, but obviously that didn’t work as planned. What happened with Reika’s wandering and the Miasma was so unprecedented, there wasn’t much of a solution Kei, Miku, and Rei could reference once they figured out what was going on. Nobody realized they could just…close her eyes. But Reika said it herself: “I don’t want to see any more.”
Fun fact: that “haunted house” Rei is taking pictures of at the beginning of the game is all that’s left of the real-life Kuze Shrine, reduced only to its opening area and hearth room.
Also, Mio does show up in FF3. Kei is drawn into the Manor of Sleep because her dreams reached out to his, and he winds up searching for her much like Miku does Mafuyu. But in the Hard ending, Kei not only survives, but he brings Mio to meet his new friends during the credits. For once, this is the canon ending, not the regular one.

  • @akako-tan
    @akako-tan 2 місяці тому +2

Some things you missed about Fatal Frame 3's plot:
The reason why Reika's pain spreaded into the world was because the pain she felt made her tattoos grow in a way that they spread into her eyes, and the eyes are a few times symbolically argued to be "the mirror of the soul". In other words, the misma is a reflection of Reika's pain.
Another thing is that using the camera obscura on Reika wasn't really what solved the incident. The camera only apeased her threat a little. What solved the incident was Rei closing Reika's eyes (so she would stop staring at her dead lover), and sending her to the other side of the river, which is a metaphor to the afterlife.

The ritual in Fatal Frame 4 fails because they did not play the true Moonsong during the Rogetsu Kagura Ritual. We know this because Soya's Mask works when Choshiro places the completed Mask on Sakuya while Ruka is playing the true Moonsong.

If i remember the lore correctly, the Kuze Shrine/Manor of Sleep was a connection to the afterlife, and the river Rei finds at the end of the game is the Sanzu(?), the river that is the boundary between the living world and the afterlife.
Yuu is there because he died, but had not passed on yet.
The entire narrative of FF3 is focused around survivor's guilt. The pain of those left behind when their loved ones have died. Tge draw of the Manor of Sleep is potentially grtting to see your dead loved ones again, but in delving to far into the boundary, you eventually go so far that your spirit can't make it back out, and like a swimmer caught in a riptide, you are dragged into the afterlife.

15:24 I think actually what it was trying to say is: the true tragedy is, that this girl had to go through all of that to protect the world, but her death was in vain, as it failed. At least with the second attempt, her death can finally mean something. Besides, her beloved is waiting for her on the other side.

I believe the reason for Mayu's leg injury still existing in the current day despite being years ago is that it doesn't. She's fully healed but is either faking her injury in order to manipulate Mio to stay with her that or its a form of psychological damage that causes her to think her leg is uninjured in order to keep her sister near.
    [SPOILER]
There's also a 'Golden Ending' where Mio refuses to kill Mayu who then tries to throw herself into the hell gate but Mio catches her, resulting in her seeing the hell gate and going blind but both sisters survive with Mio now relying on Mayu instead of the other way round.
There's also a couple of others, one where Mio is killed and Mayu pretty much keeps her corpse as a doll (also reveals that she fell years ago on purpose) and another where they both die.
There's also multiple endings in 3, with the Good/Canon ending having Kei actually survive. You can only get it by playing through the game a second time and finding a specific item as Kei.

Thanks for making a video of all the Fatal Frame games together in a single video. Fatal Frame is one of my favorite games. I admit that I never played the first & 3rd games. My first entry into the series was the second game Crimson Butterfly. After that I played the Maiden of Blackwater on the Xbox version. And not too long ago I finished playing the remastered version of the 4th game on ps4. I'm not really into survival horror games but this series I truly enjoy playing because of its story telling & unique gameplay with the camera as your only defense against ghosts. My favorite games of the series are Crimson Butterfly & Mask of the Lunar Eclipse. I hope someday someone will make a sixth installment.

What a great series of videos and retrospectives, thanks for putting this all together.
FF is one of my fav. series, I think 3 being probably my fav., playing it new back in 05 when I was 18 scared the hell outta me, the part when you go back to Himuro mansion filled me with such dread. I seem to remember too part of the manor of sleep that you pass by over and over again, maybe it was in the bell hallway but towards the end of the game, out of nowhere a face appears on the wall there, subverting expectation of what you've see many times over during your playthrough and that scared the hell out of me.
I purposely hacked my Wii and installed Mask of the Lunar Eclipse with an English fan patch back in the day too just so I could play it. That damn mannequin room, screw that goddamn life sized doll and coffin.

Ff3 characters were supposed to be set up to exemplify how each characters innate abilities were fundamentally different.
Rei is spiritually aware, but hasn't had a major supernatural incident yet, so her power is a defined baseline with the camera.
Miku is from a spiritually involved family, has already been through a traumatic spiritual incident that sharpened her spiritual powers to survive it, so her camera is like carrying a "bazooka" compared to Rei's "pistol/shotgun".
Kei on the other hand is physically strong, but spiritually weak, which limits his camera's power and the game portrays this in his pseudo-stealth mission gameplay.

  • @kadajsnightqueen
    @kadajsnightqueen 4 місяці тому +2

You’re talking about Rei and Miku’s nightclothes, and completely omitting the fact that Reika is running around full-on topless 🤣
Also, Ose was a Great Pillar, not an Immortal Flower. Great Pillars have nearly perfect sixth senses and a lot of power. Immortal Flowers range from a high amount of power and a great sixth sense to a low amount and a bit of a failure rate compared to other shrine maidens. Your extrasensory strength determines where you wind up on the mountain once you’re in your box, whether or not you can have a husband to join you inside your box, and how much say you have in when you enter the box. It’s pretty fascinating,

A lore point for the original Fatal Frame: the "old-timey camera" that Miku finds, the Camera Obscura of that game, belonged to her and Mafuyu's mother, Mikoto.
Mafuyu was using it in the Introductory Chapter, and dropped it when he was taken.
When Miku arrives, she finds it in the place he was taken.

Hey I was thinking about that supposed input read issue in fatal frame 1. Have you considered that for zero shot there is propably like some element that the ghost has to be exposed in the moment or something. And because its 3d game you can be in different angles from the ghost? Could it be that from your angle of photography the ghost just has some blind area that is not zero shot for small amount of time. Like i dunno if the ghost needs to have eyes open for the zero shot and they just blink or are a bit on wrong agle? did you consider this? Either way very bs to player

Hey! Discovered your videos again after so long!
Ahhh... Fatal Frame. For me this series is squandered potential: the series.
[SPOILERS for people new to the series]
But yeah, I picked up the original PS2 game at a store, and wound up loving it despite the jank dubbing and other quirks. Soon after, I felt like I wanted more. So I ordered Fatal Frame II online.
Very soon in though, I found something that ruined Fatal Frame II for me... that being that its immediately clear its repeating the plot of the first game, where the girls find out that they're connected to the town and the haunting is going on because of a failed ritual that was meant to seal away the ghostie-goos.
So afterwards, I looked up the other games (most especially Nitro Rad's reviews) and discovered... the entire series revolves around this point.
And then I didn't care anymore. The failed ritual thing was fine for one game but I wish the series wasn't married to it, and had just been an anthology of games linked only by the gimmick of the ghost-zapping camera.

I think it's really interesting how much you struggled with the fights (and gameplay) of the first game, because i didn't feel like i struggled THAT much when playing it. I struggled more with the puzzles and ressources. I'm by no means a good gamer, but i think i played more old adventure console games than modern games in general, to be honest.
Btw i feel like Mikus original design is less manga than her western design, because she looks more like a real person in the original than in her new design (would've loved to get her japanese design).
Also: why was your ps2 port so dark? I play the game on the ps2 regularly and it's darker sure, but not THAT dark when you don't emulate. O:

Surprised you didn't mention how the new character models in the Mask of the Lunar Eclipse remaster have much less expressive faces than in the Wii original. The girls especially look like dolls and barely emote in cutscenes.
Hair and clothing physics also took a hit as both are much more stiff in the remaster. It's especially noticeable with Ruka's default outfit where her necklace thing jiggles as she moves on the Wii but has no physics in the remaster. 49:42 My guy, the PS2 has a POWERFUL graphics card, and it can pump out some lovely graphics that for the most part hold up. It really was ahead of its time. It sucks however, that some game developers were too chicken to tap into its power.

I'm writing this right after watching the FF1 section. I'm morbidly curious, would you have a different opinion of the ending if I reframed everything using Christian terms? Let me try.
The ritual practiced in the Himuro mansion/shrine is a religious ritual. I want you to imagine Kyrie as a nun. At the age of 7, she was given to a convent. Said convent was built on top of a hellgate with the express purpose of keeping hellgate closed and this is not an urban fantasy occult secret, the entire community around the shrine/convent knew about this. She spent the next ten years of her life isolated from the outside world engaged wholly in spiritual pursuits thus growing into a pure, innocent, and saintly figure. The room where she lived was directly above the Budda room/chapel and it's not like she stayed there 24/7 we see in the flashback where she meets her boyfriend that he was in the garden and she was walking by when she saw him. Side note the rooms that nuns live in are also called cells IRL.
After ten years of spiritual dedication, she spends an entire night holding vigil in a sacred pool, while the family holds vigil in the chapel and then they go down to the sacrifice alter where she is killed. Let me emphasize this she is dead, do not pas go, do not collect 200 worldly sins, straight to heaven/nirvana. The ropes now covered essentially in the blood of a saint are used to tie the doors to hell shut. Also, I should note that the one presiding over the sacrifice is the family head, possibly even her own father. The reason why he's wearing a demon mask is because he is fully aware he is about to stain his hand with the blood of an innocent woman and his own kin, possibly his own daughter. He is fully aware of where he's going when he dies.
Except the last time the sacrificial nun fell in love and had relations with a man, big no-no. The ritual failed and everybody got fucked. As for Kyrie blaming herself for this, and deciding to spend eternity in purgatory standing at the mouth of hell keeping the door shut, um she is supposed to be a nun that's all I'm going to say. As for her boyfriend getting murdered, please look up the punishment for relations with a nun, I'm pretty sure back in the day both the nun and the guy would've been burned at the stake. Don't know what the modern one is but let's not point fingers at the Japanese, shall we?

I’d strongly recommend checking out Tara A. Devlin’s “Fatal Frame Explained” videos. She covers the lore, history, and characters pretty thoroughly, as well as tying the real-life beliefs and religious practices in to add some context for this it is who didn’t grow up with Shinto or Buddhist practitioners anywhere nearby. For anybody who wants further explanation or how it all really ties together, these videos are the best. Even as a longtime fan of the FF series, they’re very interesting and informative on top of just being soothing to enjoy.

Great review my only thing though is I disagree on making the game easier specifically in combat yes it definitely was a pain, especially in the first game with some of these big fights but honestly that’s what kind of made it challenge and yes, they had to strike the balance of making it competitive, but not making it so hard people give up but honestly, I actually like the level of Work it required. It made the game longer and while it was frustrated it also made when you did beat that ghost that much more rewarding. Sadly, I think so many people these days want everything so easy that it even translates into video games where pretty much they just want to be able to just walk through the entire game I actually like the challenge with this series even if it is frustrating, I would say the only really complaint I had with the series that frustrated me was Some of the puzzles were probably the most annoying thing to me just because I didn’t have the patience as a kid not as big of an issue now, but it was the dark spots in the game again it’s much easier to adjust and figure out a better set now than it was back thenbut this is a great series. I really wish they would remaster them.

  • @MrKrazygamer13
    @MrKrazygamer13 3 місяці тому

I played the first Fatal Frame (Or Project Zero as it is called in my country) several times, however I never have beaten the game. Many of the times I stopped playing was because it was just too scary for me, leaving it for months or years until I touched it again to try again, the final time I played it I actually managed to get over my fears most of the time (still had to take regular breaks because it was too nerve wrecking), but the game was also pretty hard for me, many times I had to use health items on random ghost encounters because they touched me, and I think by chapter 5 or so, I was completely out of healing items AND on the brink of death. It was quite unfortunate that I couldn't beat the next boss with that disadvantage, and because I liked to save on the same slot, I ruined my whole playthrough of it lol Still a pretty good game!

Must say, since the first day i knew this game (i was around 15 i guess more or less) im now 31 XD And still think this game is a piece of art. The stories, the music, all sad and cruel with some light at the end even in afterlife. I cried a river and jumped and almost broke my controler in the 3rd one and still is my favourite till this day. Ahhh! i wanna play it again xD And now.... i remember i never win against Sae in the second one :V my ps2 was broken before that lol

1:40:13 I think your example of damage output is a bit misleading since you're using the weakest film against one of the stronger ghosts. Even if you use one of the critical lenses like Zero Shot and Crush, Type 07 Film isn't going to do that much damage the further you play the game.
