My fear is that broadcasters will argue that their stations that broadcast national content (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) should have the same protections that premium cable stations receive, and that they will combat the issue of emergency broadcasting by leaving a local news channel DRM-free. They all seem to either have a channel slot dedicated to local news or weather, or if not that they broadcast that free on their websites. If they promise to put those local news and weather channels on both the web and a dedicated DRM-free broadcast channel, they can make the argument that they are doing their public duty and that their national content should be able to be locked down.
Great review Tyler! Thanks for thoroughly going over the capabilities of the tv tuner on this box. I've seen other reviews only glossing over it, concentrating on the apps.
My favorite video you’ve done is the one where the guy updates the software so that 4k works on atsc 1.0 if it’s changed at the source tv station transmitter. That was so funny! I love your videos! Hope you had a great holiday. Also hope you have an amazing new year! Thanks for all that you do for the OTA community. ❤❤❤
That was a really cool video but I have to give props to the owner of the TV station Anton Kapela. He occasionally watches my videos so hopefully he sees this comment.
Part of me wonders if that's the goal. If broadcasters force a transition to ATSC 3.0 that very few want to happen and a ton of people get left behind, they can go to the FCC and basically say, "Look, there are very few antenna viewers left. Why are you making us waste money on keeping a transmitter on the air? We are going to go out of business (despite good financial reports) let us shut off the signal" like Sweden did.
Hey Tyler, just wanted to thank you for what you do. Very much appreciated. I'm 32 and got a sweet antenna from Televes based off of your recommendations. Been subbed for a couple of years now, just wanted you to know some younger folks dig your channel. ATSC 3.0 DVR box was the next step for me. Gotta record those Indycar races somehow! Cheers my man. What is your favorite set top box so far?
I actually planned to review this unit about two weeks ago when a bunch of things stopped me. First, the loss of the remote. Then, I dropped the micro-SD card to my microphone between the floor boards. Then, the phone I use as a teleprompter wouldn't charge. Something did not want me to make this video but I did it!
It’s really a sad commentary that the tv broadcasters have thrown in so many roadblocks for the average TV viewer. All we’ve wanted was to hook up a simple TV antenna, sit down and enjoy free over-the-air broadcasts. We’ve been able to do that for decades, until now. TECHNOLOGY and GREED, has failed us, in that regard.

Glad to see stand alone tuners becoming more affordable. Wish smart TV's would come with a DVR function like my TCL Roku TV. It has a hard drive pause live video feature. But no DVR! Good idea to forward the comments to your public representatives. If they see there is a demand they will look into it.
I'd love to see the offline decryption compared between this and the Zapper box to see if it really is something the OTA broadcaters are doing differently. I remember Lon being able to unplug internet and continue decrypting channels with other boxes. I can't remember if he did that test with this one. Maybe a short to follow up?
I was actually going to mention this in the video but forgot to include it in the script. I'm pretty sure that it's how the broadcasters are implementing DRM as it explains why Lon Seidman's Zinwell tuner wasn't able to decode the one DRM'd channel without an internet connection. One way to know for sure is for me to purchase the Zinwell tuner and see if it does the same thing which I plan to do. Thanks for supporting my channel by watching these videos.
9:44 its not your box the station has to setup the app on their end. Currently nbc o&o stations have this and it lets you look at local news and weather as well as restarting a program if you missed it from the beginning. Though nbc at least in chicago hasnt updated the front page since summer 2024 as it still has paris olympics.
I recently bought a Zinwell ZAT-600B for $99 to get the 10 NextGen channels broadcasting in my area. Not only does the ATSC 3.0 tuner work well without an Internet connection, the 1.0 tuner is better than the one in my TV.
@@AntennaManYes, please review it. I have the Zinwell and noticed it has more stable sensitivity than the Zapperbox. It led me on to wondering if ATSC 3.0 from OKC has better signal propagation than 1.0, since signal strength and s/n are both well into the green even when received off the side of my outdoor Televes UHF antenna for Tulsa. Probably the main downside to the Zinwell is that is has no DVR capability. To get the ATSC 3.0 Tennis channel(T2) I think you have to have the Zinwell tuner hooked to the Internet, since if I'm right the Tennis Channel comes directly from the Internet.
I liked the signal meter as it was similar to the M1. I have been looking for something cheaper that I can use at my mother's house because moving the M1 back and forth is a pain. Thanks for the review.
On Android TV Boxes with RF Tunner when you scan TV channels they are sorted by frequency, the LCN is turned off. You must delete all channels, make sure LCN is turned on and do an auto rescan. Unfortunatelly on some models even with LCN turned on channels are still sorted by frequency , so you must sort them manually.
Just to be clear. My X1 tuning in ATSC 3.0 DRM does not require an internet connection. I completed a full set up and channel scan with out the need of internet. DRM encryption keys are burnt into the unit. You do need internet to use the android box and to update apps. I get 103 channels including ATSC 3.0 in Central FL. Please test the Zinwell to see if it can do that .
Just ordered the tablo four tuner and winegard flatwave. I like that you only need one box and antenna for all your tvs. Couldn't decide between the winegard flatwave or clearstream flex. If the winegard don't work I'll try the clearstream.
Hey, Antenna Man, I recorded my video of The Odd Couple marathon rerun promo on WLNY CW New York 13 last night although I don't got WLNY-TV yet on my TV
Tyler, Do you know if 3.0 can determine the location of the receiver of the signal? I'm worried it will reject out of market stations. 3 of the 4 networks in the St. Joseph, MO market are low power and better quality stations come out of nearby Kansas City.
Yes, with the internet connection broadcasts can see your location via a return path and possibly restrict access to out of market channels. Contact your elected officials and urge them to pass legislation prohibiting DRM on local TV broadcasts.
Zapperbox is definitely leading the way in ATSC 3.0 set top boxes. By the tuner the 4 tuner model is released, gateway access will likely be released as well.
I really need one of these boxes to allow 3.0 streaming to a second box. I'm a single TV user but the way my install works, it's incredibly inconvenient to need to run coax to the television, because it's on a cart that is constantly moved around the house. They're making it really inconvenient to use OTA TV.
1.13.25 Tyler, Question do you know where an instruction user guide can be located? What comes with the unit does not explain much. A web site pdf manual?
I acquired one of these. (Through your affiliate link). 1. Did not seem to get better signal. I’m 50 miles from towers & have a couple stations that are marginal (20db) hoping this device would help. Not really, but not certain because it doesn’t report cb levels. 2. Laggy. The slow response is annoying. 3. Remote signal. Seems the remote has to pointed directly at the receiver or it doesn’t get the signal… annoying. Finally, I didn’t see any channels actually broadcasting 4K signal. I will say that historically, PBS has had an awesome picture quality. Seems with this that channels using ATSC 3 - picture quality does seem better… even though it’s supposedly the same image on V1 broadcast.
Hi Tyler, I use inside antennas with all my tv sets . I do live in an area with fairly good tv reception . However 1 tv will lose signal every time a car goes by and a different tv has to be rescanned often because it forgets the channels. Will a box like the one in this video fix either one or both of these problems? ..thank you
My neighbor asked me to help him connect his antenna to his Samsung TV but there is no coax input on the back! I"m thinking you don't recommend Samsung TVs but do you have any advice on how to proceed? Also what is the best simple TV to buy these days ?
Tyler, regarding DRM having 3 modes (offline, online, and partly offline?) : Is there a way to check which mode my local stations are using? Does it vary by program, or does each station stick to a single mode?
Thanks Tyler, do any of these record streaming channels in addition to OTA channels AND are we able to pull any recorded OTA show off the unit(s) to say a laptop?
Question: I am a retiree living solely on Social Security at the moment, 80 miles or more from the nearest television broadcast locations. Therefore purchasing an Antenna and Tower is at the foreseeable future out of my reach. I have a friend that lives in the city (DFW) and she suggested that I place an antenna and receiver at her apartment and use the internet to connect that to my home. How would I do that?
12 Reasons why OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Just say NO to (DRM). Tell your USA Government about the Hostile Takeover of (OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV) issues listed below. DRM (Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why? Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why? 3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels. Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow). No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices. Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems. Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why? You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels. Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound. Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them. OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes. No one has solve the problem of no government money for free DRM 3.0 TV tuner boxes because 1.0 TV turners and recorders will not work after that TV Station switches to 3.0 TV broadcasts. (Range and signal error correction) OR (more sub channels and near 4k picture) trade off problem. FCC is not forcing any 1.0 TV Stations to move over to 3.0 TV. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0. The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. DRM ATSC 3.0 is a not finished product and is a work in progress mix of unproven ideas that has never gotten full FCC approval at this time. Software updates for 3.0 tuner boxes may be needed for changes made to the unfinished and future added new official ATSC 3.0 standards modules. Patent License problems. LG no longer sells TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners. Some 3.0 TV tuners companies may go out of business or stop updates leaving you with no DRM or software updates. OTA ATSC 3.0 is better but is not perfect and still can be affected by weak tv signals: (distance, weather, planes, trees, buildings, trucks, poor antenna, etc). FCC rules that 5 percent of old ATSC 1.0 coverage area does not need to be covered anymore = (SHORTER RANGE). Viewing zone outside of your 15 minute city or town could be blocked. Your TV viewing habits could be tracked by your serial number or IP address. ATSC 3.0 is updatable until it is not updatable without new hardware tuners (ATSC 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0......). Some of these 3.0 TV issues may be fixed over time. This is only some of the mess with DRM ATSC 3.0 TV. This is my opinion why DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. IMO. Stay on OTA 1.0 TV until DRM is removed from OTA ATSC 3.0 by law. It is the people versus the hostile takeover by private DRM 3.0 TV stations for control over the USA public airwaves. IMO 2024.
It looks like most flat TV's pick up digital but not ATSC 3.0 .GT Media did a good job on my Free To Air satellite box. The library has more DVD's than I have time to watch.
I am seeking tuner capacity more than DVR features which I do not need. The Zapper box doesn't seem to have a 3.0 tuner without the DVR being built-in with added cost. Any ideas?
@AntennaMan Yes, by capacity, I refer to having a on-screen guide (which this has) and decoder features. Also, I don't mind the device requiring my internet connection (like others seem to mind) as I have plenty of unused ports and a secure connection.
Because I accidentally said "continuously offline DRM" in the original take and had to re-record those words. It's very hard to match the tone from a different take.
you Sir give me way to much good ideas here, i might get me this little box, but before i do here are some questions....... #1 i assume it will work with the current antenna ? #2 since my Samsung TV has the "old" version / standard of ATSC, i assume the Box will convert it to that standard ? #3 i guess it goes between the Antenna and the TV ? #4 do i need a router to have the TV and the Box connected ( wired ) to my ISP or can i use the Box for it ( Samsung TV ) ?
Blame DRM. The company likely paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for certification which is passed onto the consumer. Consider contacting your elected officials and urge them to pass legislation prohibiting DRM on local TV broadcasts. Otherwise, TV stations might start to charge for access.
I am actually thinking about buying one of those micro sized computers for my living room television. Using a box without a QWERTY style keyboard and mouse doesn't work well for me. I still have my Dish subscription but I am one of those older people propping up cable/satellite services (I also still have a landline). I live in an area where we can only pick up one station so the ATSC function in one of these is worthless to me.
My Tablo is less than 6 months old. I'm in the Albany & Utica TV broadcast market and pick up over 40 OTA channels. Why should I even think about this?
For 3.0 to have any value for me ALL my local stations will need to be on one transmitter. This will allow me to point an antenna in one direction and get everything. Currently only ABC and PBS are on my local 3.0 tx.
This is the situation in some markets where not all local TV stations are interested in being involved with ATSC 3.0. This is why ATSC 3.0 isn't live in Cleveland or Milwaukee - the local TV stations don't care for it.
I didn’t see the Internet Virtual channels (like T2) listed or mentioned. I was able to get them using a ZapperBox and HD Homerun 4K flex is talking about getting them. Does this device support them? I also ready that the T2 channel is offered on FreeVee, which I assume could be gotten on the box via app, but more interested in seeing the ATSC 3.0 optional features get implemented by more products. How does this one stack up in this regard?
There are no virtual internet channels like T2 in my market so I'm not able to test whether not it works on this unit, although Lon Seidman might've. Check out his video review below: ua-cam.com/video/7MlE69guHO4/v-deo.htmlsi=aciNFgn1oZF7IUR7
Yes, you can use this instead of a streaming devices like a Roku or Firestick. Ironically, I've been looking for an Android TV box with a built in digital tuner and DVR for years to get the best picture quality and not rely on a network tuner. This is pretty much it and then some with the 3.0 tuner.
@@AntennaMan Is there a solid 3.0 tuner out there (with a guide) but without the built-in DVR feature (which I don't need) and thus without the added cost?
1) Can you transfer unencrypted recordings to a PC over the network or by physically moving the drive? 2) Can you upgrade to a bigger drive without losing previous recordings? (by copying files or plugging both drives into a USB hub) Thanks!
No, you cannot play recordings on another device. Lon Seidman touched on this in his video review below. ua-cam.com/video/7MlE69guHO4/v-deo.html You can likely copy the files to a different hard drive to keep recordings if you need a larger one down the road.
It's not surprising that the networks/broadcasters are pulling this DRM switching because they did the same thing with CableCARD CCI(no DRM, all DRM or a multitude of options that sometimes they claim was a mistake that was activated and could be per program)
@@AntennaMan that was my thoughts as well, first control the when, where and how and then price. They really do miss the good old days before VCR where they had full control over every step of the content journey and price.
After the digital conversion I continued to use old tvs with digital converter I bought super cheap from Asian stores. 130 bucks for 3.0 converter seems too much. A Roku stick is 25 bucks and opens your tv to a boatload of content. I would reluctantly pay for this if reception was guaranteed, but being locked out of stations would offset that. The only thing of value on free tv is sports, foreign language programs and retro stations now, I'm not sure why this should be a priority right now.
An ATSC 3.0 tuner is beneficial for people who live in weak signal areas as ATSC 3.0 signals are more robust than ATSC 1.0 signals. As for the price, this, along with other ATSC 3.0 set top boxes, are more expensive because the company had to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to get it certified to decode DRM encrypted channels which got passed onto the consumers. Contact your elected officials or expect all future ATSC 3.0 set top boxes to be pretty expensive.
good video.i have a tablo tv you told us about.so far i haves all my channels except cbs.the rest.i only watch abc&fox&dvr it.should i stay with my tablo tv 4th gen.or go to another product like this.please lets me know.
Do I need some type of connection to the internet to make this work? I plan only OTA reception (I’m a couple miles from the stations in my market)… which I’m doing now with the ATSC 1 stations. I note a couple of them are playing promo videos for ATSC 3.
Tyler,i need your help,we have a camp in wedowee, alabama, no internet and closest stations are birmingham ,al. and of course the cruddy pbs channels from cheaha mt. nearby come in strong but the ones from birmingham are weak and go in and out constantly.what antenna and amplifier do you recommend for my area ,i'm up here a lot during hunting season and the tv is unnerving please help.
What if DRM is only used for what are large sports packages on cable or satellite, like an RSN or ESPN, and a pay TV model based on pay TV from the 70s and 80s was used for it?
That would be fine but broadcasters are putting it on local channels, possibly as a way to sneak in DRM to eventually charge viewers to access their channels.
@AntennaMan I know, but I suspect if there were pay TV broadcast channels, it would give more money and attention to broadcast TV overall. And an incentive for free OTA like the Big Four to make quality content; if it's really easy (and affordable) to sub to pay TV packages, more people will use that instead of OTT. Instead of a network or other trying to grab people for its streaming services, with broadcast not really a thing, having both pay and free TV would encourage OTA viewing in general. Pay TV would operate better if linear and one-way, because privacy, and consumers also get more privacy than online. streaming. That's a back of the napkin plan, but it would be nice to see what happens if something like HBO went pay TV (on OTA).
After watching some of Tyler's older videos I've noticed his hair style has changed over the years. My question is he wearing a William shatner toupee.
@AntennaMan i just got mine in the mail and it's the best at school 3.0 tuner I've owned! And I tried two others tablo and hd home run. One UI sucked. The home run. And table was not too great. This one is the best UI and Android!
@ I’m guessing it’s the exact same tuner. Mine wouldn’t pick up the ATSC 3.0 stations in the area, due to hills and heavy foliage around my house. I thought it was worth a try because of 3.0’s resistance to multipath interference, but no luck.
@ I know that is definitely true in some cases. But in this instance I think the issue was tuner quality. I’m planning on buying an HD Homerun soon to see if it yields better results.
How many TV Station with ATSC3.0 can you receive with this Box in your area? Did it also have a built in VPN for other country streaming service without Geo-Block etc.? Best Regards Thumbs up 70
What on earth is the use of a ATSC TV tuner box that requires the internet to work? I'd just use an internet streaming device if I had internet in the boonies. It makes no sense. It's actually insane!
DRM is usefull if channels like Discovery, HBO, ESPN would broadcast OTA so you don't have to install satellite dish or cable use your existing rooftop or indoor and subscribe to these channels. But DRM for free channels like ABC, CBS, FOX it's stupid.
Those channels don't and never will broadcast OTA. It would take a complete reworking and upgrading of broadcasting centers, towers, signal repeating towers, and equipment. Which would cost millions upon millions of dollars or more.
@bchooper5603 Are you serious? It's nothing more complicated than feeding a different satellite input to the broadcast tower. There's no obstacles at all, assuming the correct rights are secured. There IS a huge block I'm going to note in another comment.
The cable channels can't feed to broadcast stations due to carriage agreements with the cable carriers like Comcast and even DirecTV. The channels had to promise they would never allow a broadcast station to retransmit the cable signal. It was intended to be on paid cable or satellite only. Recent revisions have allowed for online streams which were previously also prohibited. That's allowed now as long as it's paid. They are not allowed to sell the cable signal to broadcast TV stations.
Probably never. Cell phone manufacturers don't want to spend extra money on a feature 99.9% of people don't care about. In addition, cell phone providers prefer that people stream video so they have to pay for unlimited data plans.
Just asking? Even though Nextgen is in my market, my local translators are not Nextgen enabled? Do the translators need upgrading even though the signal is being sent to them has Nexgen?
@@tpl608 It definitely wouldn't be that low. Tyler already confirmed 500GB can work with it. My DVR (but by a diff mfr) has a max of 8TB. I chose to buy a 2TB model and it has plenty of space for recordings. Probably could have gotten away with 1TB but the extra storage was double the size for $20 or less more money.
I still don’t trust ATSC 3.0 until DRM is eliminated on linear television, because it’s severely limiting the adaption rate of OTA television, it’s supposed to be free .
Unfortunately, recordings are split up into dozens of weird files and can't be played on a PC, but you can view recordings on a PC from the much cheaper unit below: amzn.to/3PzppQx
That won't be allowed because it gets you past some of the DRM nonsense. If you can view it on a PC you can edit it on a pc and other stuff they are not going to allow
I got this box and I have seven next gen stations, but it can only pick up one the pbs one. Is that because it's encrypted? It doesn't say it's there and encrypted. It just won't connect to it. The p b s station connects instantly.
Sorry, I have terrible grammar. It will connect to pbs next gen instantly, but none of the others. They are all in the same location and distance from me.
This or Zapperbox ? ... I may have to try to take the plunge again to OTA. BAD reception at my shielded apt. but maybe try again and with one of these boxes. Maybe 3.0 and internet connection will help. Only fear that only thing worth watching will be local news. :-/
I'd say wait a few weeks for me to review the Zinwell ATSC 3.0 and post a follow up comment. For now, the Zapperbox wins in terms of tuner sensitivity and DVR functionality, but it's a hefty $250 compared to the Zinwell tuner that's $125.
Seriously? You can record multiple virtual channels if they're all in the same RF channel? My Tablo doesn't do that. Is that true for ATSC 1.0 channels, or only ATSC 3.0 channels, use the GTMedia X1 box?
I live in Canada, but close enough to get a atsc 3 signals, but if it’s DRM encrypted and requires Internet, will that cause an issue that I’m in a different country ?
No, it can only record channels from an antenna, but see my video below for information on how to record from a streaming service like Pluto TV: ua-cam.com/video/q05DtFsxmS8/v-deo.html
ATSC 3 is the reason to 'future proof' your safety by purchasing a weather radio with NOAA S.A.M.E. Alerts... no need for an internet connection or even the power grid to be functional for one of those to work....
Nice review but If anyone that has one of these could do me a favor check it with an FM radio tuner app and tell me if it picked up FM Radio too. Because there is really no reason such a device should not also pick up FM radio with the right software. Would be nice to know.
So you can likely use the device in the video below plugged into the USB port on the box with the app side-loaded to tune into FM stations. ua-cam.com/video/_ZBOTc0jWXw/v-deo.html
@@AntennaMan Thanks. Looks like internet connection is no longer needed. "Our HDTV Converter X1 not only supports online drm, but more importantly *supports offline drm* which solves the problem that users can enjoy encrypted 4K programmes even when they are not connected to the internet." If true, I'd buy one...but I don't want to spend ~$150 and have something change on the broadcast side, and essentially brick the unit. Nice work on the videos

This whole DRM for OTA antenna channels is no bueno. Good way to kill off an already struggling market.

TECHNOLOGY and GREED, has failed us, in that regard.
Hi, Sir. Thank you for all your videos. Happy New Year.
Great description Tyler 👌
Thank you tyler this was very helpful
Good to hear!
Great review!
good to see you're going strong
Glad to see stand alone tuners becoming more affordable. Wish smart TV's would come with a DVR function like my TCL Roku TV. It has a hard drive pause live video feature. But no DVR! Good idea to forward the comments to your public representatives. If they see there is a demand they will look into it.
I went to best buy and bought a converter box. It works great.
Thanks Tyler for your videos. Always great information.
Thanks for watching!
Cord cutting is nearing the end. Mandating an internet connection to provide an unlock permission to watch OTA channels is going to doom this.
Completely agree!!!! If the could charge us for breathing they would also!!
Thanks for the feedback. I have heard the tuner sensitivity in the Zinwell set top box is good. I'll have to review it.

Tyler,
Do you know if 3.0 can determine the location of the receiver of the signal? I'm worried it will reject out of market stations. 3 of the 4 networks in the St. Joseph, MO market are low power and better quality stations come out of nearby Kansas City.
Yes, with the internet connection broadcasts can see your location via a return path and possibly restrict access to out of market channels. Contact your elected officials and urge them to pass legislation prohibiting DRM on local TV broadcasts.
THANK YOU ANTENNA MAN AND MERRY CHRISTMAS from DETROIT🇺🇲

Been waiting for zapper box 4 tuner model.
My Zapper Box has been working very well.

Do you have a review for the GE 24804 antenna, by any chance? If not, where can I request antenna reviews?
DRM breaks the Emergency Broadcast System?
Yes it does. Contact your elected officials because if DRM is accepted, TV stations will eventually charge viewers to access their channels.
Metropolitan use. Thanks for saving us $$$s in our rural area 👍👍
Is the Internet requirement a way to prevent us from watching "out of market" stations?
I am seeking tuner capacity more than DVR features which I do not need. The Zapper box doesn't seem to have a 3.0 tuner without the DVR being built-in with added cost.
Any ideas?
If you mean tuner sensitivity, the Zinwell unit below is probably the best one in the lower priced tier. bit.ly/3DxK2ty
@AntennaMan
Yes, by capacity, I refer to having a on-screen guide (which this has) and decoder features. Also, I don't mind the device requiring my internet connection (like others seem to mind) as I have plenty of unused ports and a secure connection.
Why did the voiceover change at the 08:38 mark when it says "and continuously on-line DRM"?
The prices are getting a bit better, but still above my comfort-zone $60.
Is there something without the Internet to get air channel and recorder with the HBO and all this channel?
My man Tyler. Please do your side to side head bob and Bla Bla Bla on every video as your signature. It was glorious. 😅

My Tablo is less than 6 months old. I'm in the Albany & Utica TV broadcast market and pick up over 40 OTA channels. Why should I even think about this?
You don't need to think about purchasing this or any other ATSC 3.0 tuner if you pick up all channels fine now.
Same here. Tablo works great for me with a flat indoor antenna. I get all locals and sub channels, plus I can access it from any TV in the house.
Debatable Higher Resolution content. The picture might be better, but is the content that you watching so fantastic that you really care?
Might be a good option as you might be able to run that and skip the Roku, fire stick, etc
@@AntennaMan
Is there a solid 3.0 tuner out there (with a guide) but without the built-in DVR feature (which I don't need) and thus without the added cost?
1) Can you transfer unencrypted recordings to a PC over the network or by physically moving the drive?
2) Can you upgrade to a bigger drive without losing previous recordings? (by copying files or plugging both drives into a USB hub)
Thanks!
No, you cannot play recordings on another device. Lon Seidman touched on this in his video review below. ua-cam.com/video/7MlE69guHO4/v-deo.html You can likely copy the files to a different hard drive to keep recordings if you need a larger one down the road.
@ Thanks!
So this works like roku. It picks up antennae channels through wifi. Are they scrambling ota channels now?
It's not surprising that the networks/broadcasters are pulling this DRM switching because they did the same thing with CableCARD CCI(no DRM, all DRM or a multitude of options that sometimes they claim was a mistake that was activated and could be per program)
I think the long term goal of DRM is to charge viewers to access content. Why else would they require an internet connection?
@@AntennaMan that was my thoughts as well, first control the when, where and how and then price.
They really do miss the good old days before VCR where they had full control over every step of the content journey and price.
It’s like a stream box basically right AT
After the digital conversion I continued to use old tvs with digital converter I bought super cheap from Asian stores.
You're confusing OTA with FTA. OTA is terrestrial. FTA is satellite, which typically has sports, foreign channels and retro channels.
good video.i have a tablo tv you told us about.so far i haves all my channels except cbs.the rest.i only watch abc&fox&dvr it.should i stay with my tablo tv 4th gen.or go to another product like this.please lets me know.
Does your TV pick up CBS if you connect the antenna to it compared to the Tablo?
I wonder if you can access your DVR recordings from a remote location like on the road or in a hotel?
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Do I need some type of connection to the internet to make this work? I plan only OTA reception (I’m a couple miles from the stations in my market)… which I’m doing now with the ATSC 1 stations. I note a couple of them are playing promo videos for ATSC 3.
I have very tall trees that block my reception to tv towers. Any suggestions! I live in a Townhouse with strict antenna guidelines!
I think you can bypass the DRM with another box hooking up the HDMI cable to a record. Not saying its a good fix but hopefully there is a work around.
Yes you can, so it proves the point the DRM is doing nothing to prevent piracy and only inconveniencing manufacturers/consumers.
They full intend to implement OTA pay tv via DRM.
After watching some of Tyler's older videos I've noticed his hair style has changed over the years. My question is he wearing a William shatner toupee.
I am about due for a haircut
All my tv has astc3.0 but there’s only like three channels in Los Angeles area.
I like the addition of android
Me too. Android OS has a lot of freedom. You can side load apps on the box too.
Opens the door to KODI
emulation?
@AntennaMan i just got mine in the mail and it's the best at school 3.0 tuner I've owned! And I tried two others tablo and hd home run. One UI sucked. The home run. And table was not too great. This one is the best UI and Android!
I bought the stick version and indeed the tuner sensitivity is quite bad. Avoid if you have low signal strength.
Thanks for sharing! I don't recall the stick version being as bad as this one but the one station might've just had a stronger signal then
@ I’m guessing it’s the exact same tuner. Mine wouldn’t pick up the ATSC 3.0 stations in the area, due to hills and heavy foliage around my house. I thought it was worth a try because of 3.0’s resistance to multipath interference, but no luck.
@@scottpell3747 Maybe ATSC 3.0 stations in some cities are not using as much power as their 1.0 counterparts.
Best Regards Thumbs up 70
Using the indoor antenna, I receive about 24 channels. Using the outdoor, I receive about 60.
Do you know any talk boxes have a screen reader for the blind
What on earth is the use of a ATSC TV tuner box that requires the internet to work? I'd just use an internet streaming device if I had internet in the boonies. It makes no sense. It's actually insane!
Because the TV industry is being run by a bunch of out of touch corporate suits, idiots, or some combination of both.
DRM is usefull if channels like Discovery, HBO, ESPN would broadcast OTA so you don't have to install satellite dish or cable use your existing rooftop or indoor and subscribe to these channels. But DRM for free channels like ABC, CBS, FOX it's stupid.
I'm fine with DRM if it's only used in that situation but as you said, it should NOT be on local channels affiliated with ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox.
Those channels don't and never will broadcast OTA. It would take a complete reworking and upgrading of broadcasting centers, towers, signal repeating towers, and equipment. Which would cost millions upon millions of dollars or more.
@@bchooper5603 Oh, yeah? Funny how the shopping channels from CABLE TV ended up on OTA.
When will we see the phone atsc tuners ?
Probably never. Cell phone manufacturers don't want to spend extra money on a feature 99.9% of people don't care about. In addition, cell phone providers prefer that people stream video so they have to pay for unlimited data plans.
Like i think its a great idea. But ill stick with emby and the hdhomerun for dvr and tv.
Just asking? Even though Nextgen is in my market, my local translators are not Nextgen
enabled? Do the translators need upgrading even though the signal is being sent to them has Nexgen?
At this time, translators do not need to be switched over to ATSC 3.0/NextGen as we are still in the very early stages of it.
An this be jailbreak? Do you recommend fire stick?
32GB is small these days. How much is the maximum using the USB?
It likely can use any USB drive you can find. External USB devices tend to come formatted for NTFS file systems. These work up to large sizes.
@kensmith5694 many items have an upper limit of 128GB
@@tpl608 It definitely wouldn't be that low. Tyler already confirmed 500GB can work with it. My DVR (but by a diff mfr) has a max of 8TB. I chose to buy a 2TB model and it has plenty of space for recordings. Probably could have gotten away with 1TB but the extra storage was double the size for $20 or less more money.
@frommatorav1 please show us where that confirmation by him is.
@@tpl608 I expect the OS in this thing would be more modern than that
I still don’t trust ATSC 3.0 until DRM is eliminated on linear television, because it’s severely limiting the adaption rate of OTA television, it’s supposed to be free .
Can recordings made to a USB hard drive on this unit be viewed on a Windows PC?
Unfortunately, recordings are split up into dozens of weird files and can't be played on a PC, but you can view recordings on a PC from the much cheaper unit below: amzn.to/3PzppQx
That won't be allowed because it gets you past some of the DRM nonsense. If you can view it on a PC you can edit it on a pc and other stuff they are not going to allow
@@AntennaMan Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, the Homeworx unit doesn't support ATSC 3.0.
I think it is still a year or two early to spend money on ASTC 3.0
I agree, we are still in the early stages of ATSC 3.0 where most equipment is a bit expensive.
@AntennaMan Thanks. That personal reply deserves a superchat $ 🙂
Could this and the Zapper Box play on a regular monitor?
Yes, both have an HDMI output and can be connected to a monitor.
In my area you cannot buy them boxes but the stations are broadcasting this area
Ayo, is this box in Maryland
Seriously? You can record multiple virtual channels if they're all in the same RF channel? My Tablo doesn't do that. Is that true for ATSC 1.0 channels, or only ATSC 3.0 channels, use the GTMedia X1 box?
It's true for ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0 channels
I live in Canada, but close enough to get a atsc 3 signals, but if it’s DRM encrypted and requires Internet, will that cause an issue that I’m in a different country ?
That's a great question. I would be curious to see if you're locked out for being out of the country.
@ I guess worse comes I would have to use a VPN with it.
Watch Pluto TV a lot, can it record different shows on it
No, it can only record channels from an antenna, but see my video below for information on how to record from a streaming service like Pluto TV: ua-cam.com/video/q05DtFsxmS8/v-deo.html
ATSC 3 is the reason to 'future proof' your safety by purchasing a weather radio with NOAA S.A.M.E. Alerts... no need for an internet connection or even the power grid to be functional for one of those to work....
FCC needs to get rid of DRM, it messes with weather alerts, Amber alerts, etc.
