  • Today we wrap up the Color Spotlight Reboot with a long overdue subject. The purpose of this series is to learn more about popular watercolor colors, where they originated, useful color combinations, and demonstrate how to use them in a painting. This time, we're taking a look at the opaque versions of PR101: Venetian Red, Indian Red, and Caput Mortuum.

    Hello loves! This is months overdue, but it’s finally here! I was really excited for the episode all along, but it was rather intimidating to take on, hence pushing back the date so many times. I hope it was ultimately worth the wait! Also, I know I’m talking fast in this video. I’m sorry to those of you who it bothers, but there was a LOT of ground to cover, haha. You can always use the gear icon/settings to reduce the speed for a slower pace 😊 Enjoy!

    I have Sennelier's Caput Mortuum in my palette and find it lovely but I must admit that having a color named Dead Head with it's intriguing history on my palette was just too cool to pass by. I am sure this will come across as morbid but as an old lady I make plans for my passing, not that I dwell on it. When my body parts have been rehomed as much as possible then I would love to become a pigment and I would strive to give new meaning to moody soft colors with no hard edges. New Age alchemists are needed.

    Hey Denise! Excellent information as always. I've shied away from these more opaque PR 101s in the past but have come to re-appreciate them lately, especially for plein air. In recent months I tried Renesan's Red Ochre thinking it was more transparent, it wasn't but still loved it. Caput Mortem looks VERY interesting. I was totally unfamiliar with it so thanks for that. I loved all the various color combos but the ones with turquoise and teal especially caught my eye. Some very nice landscape painting possibilities there. Thanks again!

    this video inspired my purchase of Sennelier Caput Mortum. What a wonderful color ! It resides on my floral palette as it is that purply-brown seen in many flowers and leaves. Warning-it tends to be very liquid coming out of the tube, i had to do some stirring in the palette, also it has never dried solid, so not good for travel palette (very much like M. Graham in texture). It mixes well with every other color on my palette. Thanks, Denise, for yet another great video.

    It is a shame that the iron oxides get remembered for their 'dead head' gruesome member and not for their far far older and very long lasting use in cave paintings. I guess your Okapi sort of honours this though I don't think it was intentional! being one of the oldest artists pigments is quite a history. Loved your painting, btw, and I also love caput mortuum, it is a fantastic pigment in oils, but in watercolour has this velvety look that is quite unlike any other pigment. The red versions are ok, .i suppose, but I prefer the trans versions. All your mixes were a revelation, I never thought of any of these three as a mixing colour, but if you want a textural uniformity to your end result then I guess this would really help. Thwnk you for yet another interesting journey.

      @@InLiquidColor It is! ♡ Oh, and one question I had for Caput mortuum and colours similar in hue to it (Napthamide maroon, Perylene maroon, and other deeper, earthy red-purple options): Other than pigments, what is the difference in the uses of these colours? I'm obsessed with this type of colour, but I can only afford to buy one, so I was curious which you would recommend as the most versatile option. I know they're all somewhat different in hue, but I can only rationalise buying one since I'm limited in funds.

    • @InLiquidColor
      @InLiquidColor  5 років тому +2

      @@zarwrites It really depends on your subjects, so I can't answer that outright. Perylene maroon is MUCH more red than the others, napthamide maroom and perylene violet are almost identical, and none of those have granulation. Caput and Piemontite have a lot of granulation, so it just depends on what you're looking for. In my Daniel Smith Swatch with Me Part 2 I go through all their lovely browns and talk about them a bit more.

    • @zarwrites
      @zarwrites 5 років тому +1

      @@InLiquidColor Yeah, when I said perylene maroon, I realised I meant perylene violet 🤦🏼‍♀️ Thank you so much for this input anyway, though I know it's all opinion and subject dependent. I like to paint a lot of portraits, but with a fantasy edge (magical humans, but also faeries, creatures, elves), so I often don't keep strictly to life. I only own DS's primary set and the DS secondary trio, so I'm looking to add a few colours as strategically as possible. I'm always drawn to earth tones ♡ I'll definitely give that swatching video a rewatch. I think I've watched it at least 3 times now, and that's holding myself back. I just can't get enough 😂👏🏻

But that Indian Red is really beautiful, and that WN caput mortum is wonderful, like I need more paint! I don't think I have ever seen an okapi before. What a hilarious combination of a zebra and a more delicate African antelope! Love her! Thanks again for this wonderful series. I am a huge fan of PR101. I love both the transparent and opaque versions of the pigment but it took me time to get used to the opaque version of PR101, honestly.
    My favourites are Lukas' English red deep and Rembrant's Indian red (PR101 and PR264).
    I mainly use them for skintones mixed with Lemon yellow and for human hair (both red or brown, with a hint of permanent red or ultramarine blue), it also makes pretty trees and mixed with perylene green it can make beautiful deep foliage.

  • @cassiescreations9828

    O my gosh, this video is awesome! The photos of the mixes are just outstanding and what beautiful mixes they are - all of them, moody or bright! Beautiful okapi and animal paintings, as well, Denise! Off the PR101 topic, a couple of days ago, two people and myself were discussing PR102. They explained that Mission Gold (pure pigments) uses the PR102 as Burnt Sienna. Do you have any mixes with PR102? They'd been taught to use Ultramarine Blue and a PBr Burnt Sienna to make gray and the Mission Gold PR102 Burnt Sienna with Ultramarine Blue produces a flat greenish color. I read that PR102 isn't used often so I thought it's odd that Mission Gold included that as the Burnt Sienna - perhaps the closest pigment in pure form that they could label Burnt Sienna? I saw it swatched and it appeared brown but the two stated that it tints out to an orange/reddish brown, which might be similar to M Graham's PR101, Transparent Red Iron Oxide. I thought if anyone knows about PR102, it would be you!

Comparing these swatches with the lunar red rock on my DS dot card, they are very similar--the caput mortum being slightly more violet. Hope this helps.

    Beautiful use of PR101, Denise! Caput mortuum/violet iron oxide is one of my go-to colors for shadows, especially skin tones. Because it is opaque and tends to be staining, I like to use it on the base layers and then build depth and tone with more transparent colors. Something's different - either lighting, or the angle - the extreme closeups on Caput Mortum's granulation were just mesmerizing to watch! Loved the second season, you covered almost every pigment I was curious about in great detail ^_^ Plus, this episode's editing kinda feels like Jane Blundell's blog came to life :D Swatches in frame together are very useful, thank you.

    Ty for doing this one as have Caput in an acrylic tube & really couldn’t tell wet which way it leaned & now know!
    Found out the Venetian red (when dry has duller look) so how would that color work for an animal’s tongue or part’s in the ears as heard either you or other person say used Ven. red for those areas!
    Tried drawing a unicorn (needed bigger neck) but love how yours develop with each added “glaze” of final details ❤!

      I just put together a Sennelier palette to compliment my Daniel Smith for doing illustration work and building up layers. I included both Caput Mortum (PR101) and Permanent Alizarin Crimsin Deep (PR206) by Sennelier. They are similar in hue but CM is opaque and granulating where Perm. Aliz.Crimson Deep is made from a quinacridone pigment and is transparent and non-granulating. I find them both to be essential colors for natural looking deep reds as well as for dark moody mixes. They help me get enough value contrast into warm subjects.

    Hello, be carefull with PR101 and PR102. I haven t compared yet their mixes but PR101 is iron oxyde while PR102 is likely earth tone (ochre red), and earth tones are softer in mixes. PR101 is used also for burnt sienna alternative by winsor and newton, and it hasn t this muddy (not so clean but likeable) appearence of PBr7.

    Thank you for this! I was just last night swatching and puzzling over my new paint set (pans) which contains Mars Violet, Light Red, and Indian Red. The last two are only microscopically different looking, with Mars just slightly rosier. This set also has Gamboge & Indian yellow basically identical, Vermillion& perm red lt same, and Raw Sienna & Yellow Ochre looking the same. Clearly it is only student grade paint but odd to have padded the offering with lookalikes. Not the best representation of colors apparently. I am enjoying studying your videos so that I can be better informed to upgrade soon to quality tube watercolors. Keep up the great works! So helpful 😊

    The pinkest versions of opaque PR101 (Indian Red) all work quite well for skin tones. But the Natural Iron Oxides do as well if they are pink enough. Thanks for what you share. Tried with PV29(per violet), PV55(quin purple), PV23 ( Dia violet) and 32( bordeau) that I own ... With my trials, my conclusion was PV29 the best match. What is your opinion on that ... and ....how can I push it to Caput mortum ???

    I have to confess I do not like Indian Red, Venetian Red, Caput Mortuum, Light Red or any of the opaque red iron oxide pigments very much at all. This is possibly due to a fairly (I think) ghastly version of the pigment I got when I first started with Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolours and their highly opaque Light Red many years ago. I do use some opaque colours but I just can't really take to this type of colour and don't think my work would find much use for it. I much prefer the transparent Quinacridone Burnt Scarlet from Daniel Smith or Brown Madder from Schmincke, which are similar hues but transparent colours. This is all probably very good news for my bank account; it's not like I need any more tubes of paint! Also, I don't think I ever said this but your brushwork, control, and expression are all excellent, Denise. I really enjoyed watching you paint this and the finished result here.

      Hi Annette. Caput mortum (any violet version of PR101 by a different name) is a staple color for many artists, so I don't see it going anywhere for a long time. Even though I love saturated, bright hues in my watercolor illustrations, caput mortum is a go-to color for me when painting base layers and shadows, especially for skin tones. Did a quick check of 3 major brands that make caput mortum (Sennelier, Winsor & Newton, Schmincke) on 3 big art supply websites (Blick, Jerry's Artarama, Jackson's) and they are all in stock. Hope this helps!
