- Biography on Irish Author and Storyteller Peig Sayers. Sayers was a native Irish speaker from the Great Blasket Island on Ireland's West Coast. Her first language was Irish Gaelic or "Gaeilge" of which her books and essays are written. Many of her writings went on to be translated into English and other languages.

Thankyou for this. My mother in law spoke Gaelic. She was from Arklow family name Wolahan.

Peig called Irish Gaelainn not Gaeilge.
I love the Peig, but by my oath, many do not. But, I tell the young ones, you need to push through with it, or it'll be through with you.
Irish is called Gaelainn not Gaeilge in West Munster.
