Nice reaction man! Few things- Yes you are right.. he was referring to South African rappers. That they are still rappers keeping Hip Hop alive in South Africa than in Nigeria. However, this to me was no diss! As a Nigerian & an African, I love my Afro Beats but can't do without Hip Hop. Now, we have very talented rappers in Nigeria but they all switched to Commercial! Nobody was really spitting bars in Nigeria anymore! They all were switching to singing as it is reigning and left rap. Now for an OG like M.I who has for over 10years held the forte even before these new rappers came after him, leaving African Hip Hop, he had to do this to wake 'em up! IF FOR ANYTHING, M.I SHOULD BE HAILED FOR COMING BACK FROM "RETIREMENT" TO WAKE "NIGERIAN RAPPERS" UP! ....and it worked!! Since after this track, Nigerian rappers have for a fact, upped their games! The likes of our very good rappers like- OLAMIDE and PHYNO are now releasing fire rap songs back to back. I know many greats in their field that will not lift a finger even when what they have laid down (legacy) is fading away. This goes to show how M.I loves the growth, development and success of the African Hip Hop scene! Now, I wasn't really surprised as all the Nigerian rappers hated M.I for this - TRUTH IS ALWAYS BITTER! This was why he said in MARTELL CYPHER 1 that "S.A is still winning, but Naija (Nigeria) is back in town".
Rap does not sell in Nigeria.. Rappers have to work twice as hard to get the paper.. Nigerians just love to dance so the singers get all the glory.. so most rappers had to start singing to stay relevant.. Its d opposite in South Africa coz their rappers are their biggest acts.. they win the awards.. But in Nigeria you see Wizkid, Davido, Burna, Tiwa winning all the awards.. Getting all d streams.. Vector n MI released a dope collaboration weeks ago and d streams are still low.. Wizkid, DavidO... will get a million streams in days.. Little or no recognition for the rappers.. MI knows this yet he released this song.. So it enraged Nigerian rappers n they came for him...
