This isn't so much about slavery as it is being able to kill any piece of legislation that hints at labor reform, government energy in the economy with regard to climate change, or any other type of progressive agenda that poses an obstacle to the carte blanche that big business currently enjoys. Additionally, religious institutions will be able to discriminate and voting rights will remain rolled back. We are witnessing conservative social engineering in the courts that is designed to take us back to the 1840s and according to McConnell, will normalize a strict constructionist interpretation of the constitution that will self-perpetuate indefinitely through the generations of clerks and students. These Republicans are more akin to the Gilded Age than anything else, but are trying to undo the decentralization of government that occurred under Lincoln. Thus, they seek a new gag rule which will eliminate federal protections of our civil liberties. When people say that the South will rise again, I think this is what they mean.
And with regard to the Republican Party being 100 anti-slavery, I don't necessarily disagree with that. Abolitionist sentiment was less than 2% in 1854 and didn't rise to a sufficient level to move on until halfway through the war when the northern population was willing to to ANYTHING to defeat the south. But white supremacy still remained a driving force behind US foreign and domestic policy for decades. Scholars don't particularly appreciate using the slavery metaphor to describe the abuses of capitalism, but that's probably for another debate.

On the website for People of Praise under FAQ they "Can a covenanted member leave People of Praise". Only a cult would have a question like that on their website.

Sadly they really rushed this interview. And though I respect Democracy Now, they have a habit of steering the interviewees with commentary-like questioning to get the narrative they desire out of the people they interview instead of just letting people tell their story.

SCOTUS ultimately cannot go against the will of the American people to please a small majority. That would lead to mayhem in the streets, and SCOTUS knows that!

This needs to be brought up during Barrett's confirmation hearing. Something like: "Do you honor your oaths?" "What other oaths have you taken?" "Is it true that you belong to a cult that calls itself People of Praise?" "Tell us about that oath."

If it would be inappropriate to ask these questions of a Muslim or Buddhist or Jew it is not proper to ask this judge.
I was in people of faith, it was horrific.

Coral it's miles above women today who were born into good parents, a good family, a good spouse, never to experience such authoritarian abuse, to know no difference and not have anything to rise from -- and you who went through that nightmare for so long and not only survived it, and not only escaped it, but spoke out against it, grew out of it, and now know the difference between a life of that and your life today. Coral is very disingenuous , people will remain in her favor and good graces as long as they can work in behalf of her vendetta against her husband and others, but will be dropped like a hot potato if she can no longer use them. She can bash "organized religion" til the cows come home but she doesn't know squat about Jesus Christ and true Christianity. She still has that victim mentality because she really has not gone on with her life in freedom. Attaining a small following of sympathizers of those who believed all her story or suffered some abuse themselves, doesn't necessarily equate to being a nice person herself.
