Yeah, and was close to talking about the interesting, and what I personally deem to be hidden gems, Battle Bull and Go! Go! Tank, but it seems those will be for a much later time now.
It's too bad that this has such rote gameplay, because the art style and sprite design are really charming. Put these sprites in something like a StarTropics game and it would be amazing. ...And yes, I _am_ holding out hope that someone will make StarTropics 3.
This is definitely a rose colored glasses, nostalgia scenario for me. I can’t imagine playing it now. But remember beating it a couple times as a kid and having lots of fun. I thought I had better taste than that. 😉 Oh just saw a comment reminding me about playing it co-op. That might have been a big factor.
Excellent. I love your coverage of these obscure games. Can't wait to see you cover other platforms some more as well as 2020 for more green and black goodness.
Brutal review, but honest. I will repeat what everyone else is saying in that the sequel is much improved and it'll be interesting to see you break it down in the same way you did this one. RCII for me was really fun, but having fun can sometimes blind you to a more objective view on a game's systems and so on.
I wish Jeremy can find people he can trust and who can all divide working on the 'Works' episodes among them in a neat order and still maintain that quality insight and criticism. He needs those extra hands badly. Looking forward to your SNES 1991.
I think you misunderstand my motives. I'm doing this because I enjoy doing the work, not because I'm trying to saturate UA-cam with retrospectives. Handing it off to someone else would go against the entire point here.
It's undoubtedly a joy to work on it, but many of your viewers decidedly see this as a project with a finite goal: To catalog all games in a platform, which they would love to see completed. How do you gel with such a lofty wish? What would you think if, if you were to stop making the 'Works' series for whatever reason, countless copycats, or a fan community, would try to pick up and continue the 'Works' series from where you've left off?
People can create whatever videos they like. The more efforts there are to preserve information about the medium's history, the better. In any case, I don't consider myself beholden to what other people see as my goals, because everyone has their own thoughts on that and there's no way to satisfy them all.
I'll miss you, Game Boy Works ;_;7 I like the NES and SNES Works too, but I simply don't have anywhere near the nostalgia for those systems as I do the good ol GB.
I’m currently playing this one, and it’s a delightful little pocket-sized adventure. I would have loved to see a later polished title for the SNES, holding onto the two player mode.
@@7thangelad586 gotcha. I haven't played either but I'd like to have both of them in my collection. Just from seeing the gameplay, I think this guy was really really harsh on this game.
I remember really wanting to play this game just from the screenshots. I was that desperate for a Zelda-like in 1990 Of course, five seconds into watching the gameplay and, no ... oh no ...
>Once you obtained Fire spell, your sword becomes useless So this game not only borrowed concepts from Zelda, but also Ys II. >"Thou art awesome!" I'd rephrase that to "Thou art awesome, dude!" for fun factor.
This game filed a gap until Nintendo made a Zelda game. As a kid coming from Sega that wanted to try Nintendo games it was pretty great. But yeah, doesn't agree well. Music is still good though
I played a lot of Final Fantasy Adventure as a kid and I thought it was unambiguously better than Link's Awakening, mostly in terms of replay value. And I loved Link's Awakening, to be clear.
In a recent video Parish confirmed that NES Works was starting again in 2019 so that's out. Unless he plans to move into either non-Nintendo systems or cover the Virtual Boy (it only had 22 games so he could finish in mid November) SNES Works 1992 is the most likely choice.
Does the 2020 estimate include the thing you mentioned in the recent retronauts (GC ep) where you and Chris Kohler are doing a chronology for the virtual boy.
I was considering this game and it is being sold for a lot at a local gaming store but yikes!! At least the graphics look nice though. Thats the only thing it’s got going for it.
Never played the first game (weird, considering how desperate I was for anything resembling an RPG), but I did play the sequel. It was certainly better than this looks--I liked how you could switch playable characters, for one--but calling it "good" would be a significant overstatement. That was obvious to me even at that young, overly forgiving age.
He will be covering other systems before then. He has mentioned in the comment section of the last video that NES Works 1987 will come next year and he confirmed in a comment in this video that he was finishing SNES Works 1991 this year.
I like all three of the Works series, but Game Boy Works is my favourite and it feels like the most necessary.
I remember being a kid and seeing an ad for this game, desperately wising to acquire it. I am glad to know that I didn't miss anything.
I almost thought you were going to say "the real Rolan's Curse was the friends we made along the way."
I just wanna stress that you're doing God's work, Jeremy
Nooooooo! I can not wait till 2020 for new Game boy works :(
Yeah, and was close to talking about the interesting, and what I personally deem to be hidden gems, Battle Bull and Go! Go! Tank, but it seems those will be for a much later time now.
electricmastro Does suck to wait I suppose. Hopefully he remembers to come back.
2020 was not a year to look forward to.
Local man driven to murder random stranger after merely three minutes of a Rolan's Curse music loop.
It's too bad that this has such rote gameplay, because the art style and sprite design are really charming. Put these sprites in something like a StarTropics game and it would be amazing.
...And yes, I _am_ holding out hope that someone will make StarTropics 3.
Agreed. For 1990, this looks great. No backgrounds that are just white, for example.
When it comes to Game Boy reviews, no one rocks that turkey like Jeremy Parish.
God, that is just the best phrase XD
This game can be played all the way through with two players. That does actually make it a bit more fun.
With a link cable ?
Or on super game boy ?
@@777superlightwater yeah, with a link cable!

THOU ART AWESOME, JEREMY!
Damn, I'm sitting here waiting for the new Game Boy Works videos... Love them, hope too see more soon.
There'll be one in a few weeks.
I wish Jeremy can find people he can trust and who can all divide working on the 'Works' episodes among them in a neat order and still maintain that quality insight and criticism. He needs those extra hands badly. Looking forward to your SNES 1991.

I mean you know there's a sequel right? It's expensive as hell though.
@@Gameboy-Unboxings I played and finished it as well. I would still love to see it in 16-bit :)

Congrats on two volumes, Jeremy! For your next project in the interim, you could cover and finish the Virtual Boy lineup multiple times!
I don't know, I doesn't look that bad to me. I love obscure games like these.
I always loved that cover art
I think this looks fun enough for a limited early short GB game. It had a sequel too, though I wonder how much they changed it.
But the game has multiplayer! Actual coop adventuring! I think that's worth mentioning. Shame the much improved sequel doesn't offer that.
I remember really wanting to play this game just from the screenshots. I was that desperate for a Zelda-like in 1990
Of course, five seconds into watching the gameplay and, no ... oh no ...
Cool. Awesome. Nostalgia overload.
You know, I seem to remember playing this as a kid and not hating it...but I remember basically nothing about it, which I guess says it all.
I wonder that I should play rolan's curse.
I do like the graphics and cover art for this game. The rest can fade into history
This game was my first gameboy i ever own and this is my favortie soundtrack of all gameboy game
I used to love this game as a kid, mainly because I suck at games and this one was a breeze. I must've completed it at least 6 times.
Can't wait for Genesis Works!
I was just recently wondering what the first games I ever played were and wound up here :)
Seems reminiscent of Murasame Castle the way you describe it, except for the part where it's extremely slow and cumbersome.
>Once you obtained Fire spell, your sword becomes useless
So this game not only borrowed concepts from Zelda, but also Ys II.
>"Thou art awesome!"
I'd rephrase that to "Thou art awesome, dude!" for fun factor.
absolutely savage title

2020 is a joke right?
....right?
Satoshi Matrix No He is finishing up SNES Works 1991 this year and NES Works 1987 is happening sometime in 2019.
hello from the future! yes, 2020 is a bad, sick joke :(
What's your favorite action RPG?
Daily reminder that thou art awesome.
I think either NES Works 1987 or SNES Works 1992 will be next after this.
Retroarbeith XII Gaming I’m hoping for N64 Works
In a recent video Parish confirmed that NES Works was starting again in 2019 so that's out. Unless he plans to move into either non-Nintendo systems or cover the Virtual Boy (it only had 22 games so he could finish in mid November) SNES Works 1992 is the most likely choice.
No secrets here - I'm finishing Super NES 1991 next.
I want this game already got the sequel :-D
Does the 2020 estimate include the thing you mentioned in the recent retronauts (GC ep) where you and Chris Kohler are doing a chronology for the virtual boy.
the_muteKi No based on comments he made on this and his last video he is finishing up SNES Works 1991 and also doing NES Works 1987 next year.
oh god, 2020 is less than two years away *crumbles away into a fine trail of dust, scattered along by the dry, careless winds*
What platform are you going to focus on, Jeremy?
This sure is a curse.
Dies this take place in Hackney London?
I was considering this game and it is being sold for a lot at a local gaming store but yikes!!
At least the graphics look nice though. Thats the only thing it’s got going for it.
So it’s like a cut down rogue like?
Not in any meaningful way, no.
Never played the first game (weird, considering how desperate I was for anything resembling an RPG), but I did play the sequel. It was certainly better than this looks--I liked how you could switch playable characters, for one--but calling it "good" would be a significant overstatement. Meh I think two was better
I really hope you were kidding about the 2020 thing. I have to live with Trump for the next two years and no Game Boy Works to watch? Ughhhhhhhh.
He will be covering other systems before then. He has mentioned in the comment section of the last video that NES Works 1987 will come next year and he confirmed in a comment in this video that he was finishing SNES Works 1991 this year.
Which will happen first: the return of Game Boy Works or the ousting of Trump from office?
Living with Trump is a good thing.
"Yes, the diagnosis came back as inoperable cancer, but trust me, that's GREAT news."
How cringey
I like the graphics on this game not amazing but charming. Too bad about the gameplay. Funny dialogue.
Calling this an RPG seems like a little bit of a stretch.
