  • Weekly report on Feb 19, 2024 of what has happened for the past week and will be happening in the upcoming week in the Maui County Government including County Council, Mayor's office Lahaina Fire and relevant State legislation. The Maui Pono Network is a grassroots organization dedicated Pono Government thru Community Action. Here is what is covered in this brief video narrated by Aja Eyre:
Maui County update for the week of February 19
    1) Senate Bill 3381 greatly impacts the reconstruction of Lahaina. It appears to disempower the county and give control of the development to the state and Governor Green. The 9:00 people who would have tremendous power and control over the development would be appointed by Governor Green for the first two years. This initial phase is foundational for future development. Link to SB 3381: www.capitol.ha...
    2) The county clerk has been negligent in getting relevant county data information and decisions to the residents. We rely on the text from those meetings, and some have still not posted from early January. With the advancement in AI, these text should be available two days after as it is with many other committees. It appears we are being blocked from a civic engagement.
    3) The Oluwalu temporary disposal site for the Lahaina fire debris is still raising concerns by not having proper protocol for environmental safety. The Maui Community Investigation organization has taken samples of the more toxic ash at the top and the deeper 6 inches of substrate that is also being removed. 90% of the toxins are in the top ash and we are asking that this be handled and stored separately.
    4) There are watershed concerns especially for the West side. There is legislation to have our watershed and system be placed under the public domain.
    5) Now is the time to seriously consider running for a county office. The Maui Pono Network will be conducting interviews starting in March for all candidates and will provide support for candidates who serve the people and environment.
The Maui Pono Network is a grassroots organization dedicated to supporting the people and the ‘Āina of Maui County. The upcoming 2020 county elections are critical for our future as we transition from a plantation framework; at stake are large tracks of land, water distribution and if residents can afford to stay here. Now is the time to elect representatives who serve Maui Values.
