With Tatiana in the US and the rest of the band in Kyiv either organizing aid or getting ready for the Russian assault on the city, please react to Jinjer's "Home Back". It is a more poignant song now than it ever has been. 🌻💙💛
Many European bands will sing their songs in English to appeal to a larger global audience. Nightwish. Scorpions. Europe. Helloween. Accept. Warlock. Rammstein is unapologetically German. They make you work for it. How can you not love that? The HAVE recorded a few songs partially (or wholely) in English like Engel, amerika, and Du Hast. But they are still unapologetically German.
I often forget they did English versions of Engel and Du Hast. I preferred the German versions over the English, despite not speaking any German. Something just feels off in translated recordings.
Well it works for them. They are basically the only band singing in German that is so huge in Poland or France and people actually understand the lyrics (even if they have to check them online). So never change Rammstein, no English please.
Du Hast (German), and Du Haßt (English) is not the same song, nor the same spelling, nor meaning, but is still pronounced the same, also, the it's same music. Du Hast is "You Have" and is about a marriage proposal. Du Haßt "You Hate" and is about a spiteful, dissolving relationship.
From what I understand that line originally meant something like "unification of Germany over anything else" but nowadays it often gets interpreted as claiming supremacy over everyone else (especially since the world wars), which wasn't the original idea and kind of sad considering it's actually quite a beautiful piece. Though removing the bits referencing the ancient boarders was justified. Still better then our (Swiss) anthem, which is terribly outdated and has basically nothing to do with modern Switzerland and many/most don't like it, but agreeing on a new one is basically impossible so we just keep our current anthem.
About at the time this came out our Bundespräsident came with a quote, that said (in translation), One can only love this country with a broken heart. Seems pretty much what this song is about.
As much as I love and appreciate their official videos, rammstein is definitely one of those bands you want to watch their live stuff. They put on a SHOW!
Something phenomenal about the songwriting in this song is the callbacks to ramstein's previous catalog Du hast. Ich will. Mein Herz brennt And on Sonne, the big blast is on four. "vier!"
I saw noone else point it out, but using Ruby Commey as "Germania" in this video is a stroke of genius, it drove the right-wing nutters insane and it helped the accusations of neonazism that was- as usual- levelled against the band. not to mention she is stunning and plays the role well.
He wants to love Germany, but its history makes it hard is the gist of the song. They have won many awards for their videos, and they are normally controversial and always thought provoking, but it's live where Rammstein really come into their own. I'm a massive fan of Pink Floyd, Muse, and Nightwish, but Rammstein live is simply the biggest, baddest, and best show on the planet. They're absolutely nuts (in a good way)🔥🔥🔥🎆🎇🔥🔥💥💥💥👼🎆🎇🔥😳
Absolutely agreed. I had the pleasure of seeing Roger Waters perform The Wall some years back here in Houston, then subsequently saw Rammstein in Dallas a couple years later. Rammstein blew that show out of the water. Theyre on a whole other level
The cannibalism scene... it's an obvious symbol (to me anyway) of the Holy Roman Empire feeding off Germany. With many of Rammstein's videos and songs, you have to get past the graphic scenes and lyrics to the root of what they are trying to say. Too many people get stuck on the literal scene or lyric and dwell on that. A good example is how people are saying that Rammstein support Naziism, just because they see the swastika, but they are missing the fact that Rammstein is condemning it. In a lot of ways, Rammstein's lyrics and videos are more for thinking people while their music is for everyone. You can still use Deutschland as a workout song, because it's a good workout song, full of energy, while you appreciate the work and thought put into the words.
Mmh, the Roman time is in the beginning. It is 16aC, the Romans want to found the last Dead Soldiers, from here 3 Legions, they lost 9aC in the Varus Battle. There cannabilsm scene is in the Middle Age, Monks, live so good, and people die with Hunger, or into Wars. Greetings from nothern Germany
@@ralfmeyer9086 "There cannabilsm scene is in the Middle Age" Roman time ≠ Holy Roman Empire Holy Roman Empire ist das Heilige Römische Reich Deutscher Nation, welches 962 mit der Krönung Otto I begründet und 1806 mit der Niederlegung der Reichskrone durch Kaiser Franz II beendet wurde. Das Mittelalter endetet übrigens mit dem 15. Jhdt. Ab der Entdeckung Amerikas 1492 spricht man von Neuzeit (modern history). Die Kannibalismuszene spielt eher auf auf die Situation im 16. und 17. i think the symbolism is more about religion feeding off the country, than hoy roman empire . The first thing I thought about was the religion wars during the 1500's
This brings back so many memories from when I FINALLY got to see Rammstein live in 2019 after being a huge fan of them for over 10 years, hands down THE best live show I have ever been to, it was absolutely incredible!
Hi this is a copy paste and i think it really helps to understand the meaning of the song= German is my first language - so as a native pls let me explain as concise as possible many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made as English is not my first language :-) Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant. The video as well as the lyrics are a critical review on Germany’s history. Main scenes of the video: The first scene with the roman soldiers refers to the battle of Teutoburg forest, the first time the German tribes untied under Arminius against the Romans and ambushed them on their march back to their winter camp + completely annihilated several legions - the romans would never return and fortify at the Rhine - this could be seen as the birth of the German identity. The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story) When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII) Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born. Next scene shows the Hindenburg disaster (famous German Airship which blew up in flames) during a time of growing industrialization 1930s. Next Scene is from the communist elite in eastern Germany who was indulging in party and Champaign while ordinary people were poor and the main idea of communism should be equality of the people. Then the scene in the middle ages - where the monks (representing the church) feast on Germania (the land) and suppress the common folk (underneath the table). The scene in the prison again refers to the roaring twenties, as Germania is dressed in a Prussian uniform suppressing the German people. Additionally money is thrown away by everybody, a reference to the big inflation in Germany after WWI. Then the rockets (Nazi German was working on the first warfare rockets called V1 and V2 (V standing for “Vergeltung” which translates to retaliation - fitting to the picture with the rockets, the lyrics are an alliteration on “über” a german pre-syllable/prefix meaning over. “Überheblich (overbearing / presumptuous), Überlegen (superior) Übernehmen (taking over), Übergeben (handing over), überraschen (surprise), Überfallen (ambush), „Deutschland, Deutschland über allen“ (Germany, Germany above everyONE). The line „Deutschland, Deutschland über alleN“ (Germany above everyONE) is a reference to one of the verses of former national anthem of Germany which was in use from 1922 to 1945 and got excluded after WW2 for being too nationalistic. In this verse there was a line “Deutschland, Deutschland über alleS“ (a subtle difference to the line in Rammstein’s version translating to “Germany, Germany above everyTHING”). The actual verse with this line was already written in 1842, long before the formation of Germany as a Nation (which only happened in 1871) - therefore “Germany, Germany above everything” was relating to the importance of uniting the several German ministates, kingdoms and Duchies into one nation. After WWI this verse got taken into the national anthem of Germany as it spoke to the patriotism of the German people but later officially excluded fomr the anthem since it was deemed too nationalistic. Today this verse/line is generally frowned upon and would be associated with Neo-Nationalism. Using this line in the scene with the concentration camps including the subtle change from “Germany above everyTHING” (which has already the nationalistic connotation) to “Germany above everyONE” which carries an even more nationalistic / racist meaning is a very clever double-reference to the doctrine of racial supremacy in the Third Reich. The Concentration camp prisoners have symbols sewn on their jackets for the groups the Nazis hunted and killed (yellow star for Jews, Pink triangle for Homosexuals, red symbol for political adversaries (communists). Germania is on the side of the Nazis and has an eyepatch (representing the blind eye that many Germans turned on the atrocities of the Nazi regime. The Scene where Till is dressed as a woman refers to the left wing terrorist group called “Rote Armee Fraktion” - a terrorist association in the 1970s responsible for several political assassinations and murders as well as a famous kidnapping of German Diplomats in Stockholm. Then there is the scene with the stake at which books are burned by the Nazis and people are burned by the church (inquisition). Later the monk (church) and the Nazi soldier hug (as the church did not go against the Nazis when they came to power and both organizations were responsible for a lot of intolerance and suffering in their times. The scene where Germania is dressed in white with a Halo I think refers to the positive, the strength of the German people who recovered time after time from several catastrophic disasters in their history. Later she gives birth to puppies representing the German people. The puppies are from a rare breed of dogs (Leonbergers) who’s population got almost extinct in both world wars (symbolized with the dogs wearing gas masks) but recovered after the wars. In these scenes the band members wear space suits - in my view a reference to the (hopefully) better future of the German people. In the very last scene of the outro you can once more see Germania with national colors (black, red gold) with black lipstick, red eyes and golden armor before a red/ black background holding an eagle, the heraldic symbol of Germany. Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history: One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.)
Thankyou for the detailed explanation! As an Englander I'm relying on German people to really interpret the video. Could the astronaut scene be referring to Sigmund Jähn perhaps?
This is an amazing explanation. I'm from the US but I interpret the Sonne piano version at the end to be a sign of hope since that song is about the sun rising. This video and the band have always been amazing. Big fan since the early 90s! I've learned some German from them as well, as I'm sure many of their fans have as well.
I am glad about everyone in the World to help us germans not forget where we came from to be where we are. So thanks and praise to Rammstein. Our past is Dark, and bloody, and aweful, and glorious, and cruel, and all those things. It has made us what we are now, and we must never forget.
I am 59 and I love Rammstein. They are not afraid to show what the younger generations are squeemish about the past. Look at Whoopi's quotes about the HOLOCAUST. There are to many that refuse history, it is not pretty in a lot of areas or times BUT it is history. I am so glad that you brought that up and a well done to you for that. i have been a long time subsciber for years and keep up the work. More Rammstein !!!!
21 years old over here! I wouldn't say that the younger generations are "squeemish" about it. Not sure if you are German or not but I feel like we sure do learn about the past and responsibility coming with it here. We are actually raised into this feeling of responsibility and horror still. And this song just beautifully shows the feelings young German people also hold towards their own country. The lack of national pride couldn't be any lower to non-existent over here. Today as well as at the times of my parents no-one would dare to hang a Germany flag out on their balcony or house when there is no current sports event. Nobody would even see a reason to do so and if someone did hang one outside of sports they would get a very lot of sceptical and weird looks. And I never have once in my life met a holocaust denier, the only ones that do literally go into the Neo-nazi category because even the "normal" right wing wouldn't be that oblivious and stupid here to dare denying it. We get education about our history from a very early age on and with getting older the pictures and details get more and more gruesome and haunting. As said, I'm not sure if you are German or not and I can only speak for my own country. But I definitely wouldn't say this doesn't concern younger generations. This song shows the feelings of many Germans regardless of age or their generation.
@@tessam3612 I am a 33 year old Canadian. Here in Canada we are only beginning to try to come to terms with the cultural genocide or country waged against the indigenous peoples who's land we stole. I wish our education system did a better job of teaching the horrors of residential schools and the so called 60s scoop. Even now, social services are guilty of taking away children from indigenous people at a fast higher rate than others (though some of that is due to the intergenerational trauma affecting them, which has created many problems in indigenous communities). And now, every day I see the horror of war in Ukraine. I can't help but wonder if Russia will ever experience a similar national understanding of the transgressions their country has committed.
@@Bobbias Im 19 YO and I live in America. Right now my home is splitting apart between people who want to erase the past and those who wish to keep it alive. I want to speak for myself and many folks I know when I say we are ashamed of what our ancestors did to not only the native Americans who once walked this land, to the African people that had be kidnapped and brought here, the Asians who were trapped in camps during WW2. The list goes on and there are a lot of people in my generation who feel terrible but want to keep our symbols of the past such as the flag of the confederacy, because it reminds us that no matter what we cant change the events that shaped us. Sadly those things happened and as much as I wish I could heal the wounds my ancestors caused I can do no such thing. During one of my history classes in high school I had to do a presentation on the holocaust and it took everything I had to not start crying because I had family who were German who I was told were forced at gun point to join the German war machine. Threatened that their wives and children would be murdered if they didn’t join. And I had American family members who fought against the Germans and all I could think about was how much pain and suffering happened at just this one event. I tried my best to describe in the most detail that I could the true pain and horror that the holocaust had brought unto the world. I made even my teacher cry because I compiled stories about men women and children who died during this time and story after story I watched my classmates and teacher begin to silently cry. During that time all I could think about was how scarred and sick did the Prisoners of those camps feel. Knowing at any moment they could be separated from their families and put to death. What did my great great uncle feel while he wandered Europe in search of American soldiers to kill all because he was ordered too. What did my great great grandfather feel whilst looking for those Germans, maybe believing they were all heartless monsters that needed to be killed or maybe not even wanting to be a part of the war, having no real desire to kill Germans just following his orders. History is a violent and vicious cycle. Every nation has their dark side of history
@@tessam3612 I’m 19 and I’m American. First of all Im sorry that we had to go to war all those years ago. It makes me sad that war is part of both our histories. Here in my home we see the flag as a sign of pride and hope for the world. The way I see it is a blood stained banner. One symbolizing hope to those in need of help, one symbolizing war and punishment on those who seek to conquer. I want to see my flag as the symbol of freedom and opportunity but sadly my home is becoming less and less free by the day. Here there are a lot of youth who wish to learn our nations history and not repeat it. We wish to do what we can to make amends for all the bad things we’ve done but there are also a lot of my generation who seek to sweep our history under the rug and forget about it. I say it needs to be addressed and needs to be talked about. Much more than it is because here were taught about the civil war, slavery, the trail of tears, WW1 and 2 but not many people are taught just how brutal those events were. You’d be shocked how many people don’t understand just how awful and brutal the trail of tears was. Just how horrible and bloody the civil war was. As much as I wish that those things didn’t happen, they did but I cant change that. What I can do is ensure that those events or anything like them never happen again. Same with you, best you can do is learn from the past and ensure that it never repeats itself. I hope this comment finds you well
Thank you for your lovely comment! 💖 Hope you are having a lovely weekend! 😊 Can't wait to see you tomorrow on my livestream: ua-cam.com/video/wqnYJzLorBk/v-deo.html
Was at their concert two weeks ago at the National Stadium in Warsaw, Poland. The "Deutschland, Deutschland, ueber allen" part was weird. The band didn't sing that line for the first time ever out of respect... and the crowed, well, sang it... add this to the totally open Polish/German border and it adds to the video, on how weird European history is :D
This video is insanely brilliant. It takes through the whole history of Germany and to put it in nutshell Rammstein describes the horrible history of their home country and the need of national pride which they cannot have!
The meaning of this is the duality between loving your country but feeling guilty for it’s atrocities. You want to love it but it’s dark history makes it hard to do so. You’d feel guilt to love your own country. Another powerful line is “One who climbs high will fall low. Germany, Germany above all (Everybody)” which implies germany thought itself greater than everyone else to the point it hit rock bottom. An icarus and his wax wings kind of metaphor
Rammstein is definitely a rabbit hole you need to go down The imagery is heavy and dark, but it makes you look at things from a different view... Imagine having your homeland be a place of hate and evil... It's got to be hard
@@coy0te9 exactly nobody or no place is perfect... But the the issue is, are they trying to change or work to be better as a person or nation... That's what matters
Hi, I'm from Germany. Rammstein is playing a classic "Industrial Metal" style. A 50-50 mix of synthesizers and hard metal guitars. A big part of the German history in one video. The black woman as Germania. Germania is the personification of the German nation. It isn't and wasn't a goddess or Joan of Arc. The glass coffin: It is Little Snow White from the Grimm-fairytales....and from their own video "Sonne". Only with black skin and in space. The piano song at the end is the song "Sonne", too. The words "Germania Magna" at the beginning are a Roman name for the area of Germany, that wasn't conquered by the Roman Empire at that time. Germania Superior and Germania Inferior were the Roman conquered areas (Roman provinces) of Germany. The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means: Germany as a unified state is very young. A unified German nation is only existing from 1871 onwards. Before that year of unification Germany was made of countless, little mini-states and the people identified first and foremost as Prussians, Hessians, Saxons etc, etc, etc. and only in a second line of thought they had a lose sense of being somehow Germans, too, as a kind of unifying second identity. So the area & the landscape where the Germans are living and the Germans themselves as a people...are thousands of years old. But only recently, in 1871, there was a unified Germany as one single state. So Germany as a unified state is very young...and at the same time it is thousands of years old. The battle of the Teutoburg forest against the Romans (and Rammstein as Roman soldiers and Germans alike). That battle is of ABSOLUTE importance for the German history. The hanged bodies in the trees were the beaten Roman soldiers, who were gruesome sacrificed to the Germanic gods...and were partly nailed to the trees. The Varus-(Teutoburg)-Battle was already in 9 AD. In 16 AD were the vengeance campaigns of commanding field general Germanicus under Emperor Tiberius Augustus. Therefore we see here the arrival of the Roman troops of Germanicus and they are watching their dead comrades hanging in the trees or getting their heads chopped off (for nailing them to the trees). In reality the Romans under Germanicus found only the bones of the Varus army in the various ways they were slaughtered, sacrificed and displayed at the trees. Slaves were liberated even decades after the battle. After the scenes with the Romans we saw the Hindenburg Zeppelin disaster (the burning Zeppelin in the background). The moustaches and clothing from the fight scene are from WWI and post WWI years. From the working class people in WWI and the roaring 20's. In the WWII years later on this kind of big bushy moustache was already out of fashion. The falling banknotes in the prison are not about corruption. That scene is about the hyper-inflation of the 1920's, that took away the savings of the Germans and left them in deep poverty and desperation. One had to pay a loaf of bread with a handcart full of nearly worthless banknotes back then and it hit the German people deep down inside and in their souls. Especially the poor ones and the simple workers. The V2 rocket (first manmade object in space) as technical triumph of the German spirit...and at the same time the killing of the concentration camp prisoners in the bunker factories below the mountains during the production of that rocket. This scene in the video could be a representation of a very specific concentration camp. It was "Mittelbau-Dora" below the Kohnstein mountain. A mixture between a big, huge bunker factory for V1 and V2 rockets and a concentration camp. The concentration camp inmates had several different markings for different kinds of convicts and their "crimes" sown to their chests, like it was in reality, too. A pink triangle for homosexuals, the star of David for Jews and two of them were marked with the double-triangles for Jehovas Whitnesses. The book burnings of the Nazis and the burning of the witches of the church. In the same scene with the book burning there is EVEN MORE going on. The cooperation of the church with the Nazis, when the priest with the cross embraces the Nazi SA-man. The scene with the sign with the Hammer and a pair of compasses in a circle of wheat is the sign of the GDR (DDR). The socialst German state in the east that existed before the German reunification. Therefore it was Karl Marx in the background in the scene with the tank (not the scene at the concentration camp). The scene with Rammstein wielding guns (the pumpgun) and taking Germania hostage was about leftwing terrorism of the 1970's. The terrorists were called the RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion). My interpretation of the red scanner-like beams: There are two different kinds of beams. The massive straight red light beam that goes up into the heavens AND there were those smaller, thinner "scanner" beams. Aliens (or humans from the future) are scanning the whole German history. Like some real scientists are scanning and excarvating ancient Mexican or Egyptian statues, for example. The massive red light beam is the red ribbon of time that ties together all the historical events. PS: As for the dogs: Germans are fanatical dog lovers. We are a dog-owner nation. The dog is a firm part of Germany. PPS: They didn't eat the body of the woman and her inner organs, even if it really looked that way. They were eating the national dish of Germany, that was put on the body of the black woman: Sauerkraut, Kassler & sausages. In my opinion it symbolizes the church eating itself fat on the goods and values and food of Germany during the simple people (farmers, simple workers etc) lived a long time in a kind of hell of poverty and serfdom (the red fetish area below the table with Germania on it). But that eating scene could indeed have a double meaning. It could represent the 30 years war, that was fought for religious reasons and depopulated large areas of Germany. It forced the people to commit canibalism because nobody was there anymore to produce food. Except the fat, wealthy people of the church, of course. They were still able to eat enough. Only the simple people at the bottom (farmers etc) died from hunger and had to fight and die in that war. The 30 years war was the biggest catastrophe in Germany until WWI happened. PPPS: The short scene with the dogs and their gas masks = WWI, where in reality animals (messenger dogs & horses) AND soldiers were wearing gas masks, too. PPPPS: The puppies at the end are Leonberger dogs. The Leonbergers nearly went extinct during WWI and WWII. PPPPPS: The black woman in the prison was dressed in a Prussian uniform with a Prussian helmet. Till sings the famous, often misinterpreted, line of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the Germans), that is not forbidden in Germany but simply isn't sung anymore in our modern national anthem. Till sings in his version the line "Deutschland über allen" (Germany above everybody) What is a BIG change to the real line in the orginal Deutschlandlied-song. In the original Deutschlandlied song it is written as "Deutschland über alles" (Germany above everything). The real, whole line of that old Deutschlandlied goes "Deutschland, Deutschland über alles. Über alles in der Welt" (Germany, Germany above everything. Above everything in the world). This line is often misinterpreted by many people as chauvinism and as a looking down upon all other countries on this planet. But that is wrong and not many people know about that in Germany and elsewhere. The writer of that famous line didn't meant it in a chauvinistic way. When that song was written, Germany was divided into umphteenth mini-states, what made Germany relative powerless and defenseless. Therefore the task of German unification was the goal above any other goal for all Germans (at least the writer of the song meant it that way). So the main goal for all Germans had to be the united Germany. The goal of "(united) Germany above everything else". That was, how that line was meant by the writer of the song. The line isn't forbidden, like many people wrongly think. It's simply not sung anymore and not part of the official anthem of modern Germany anymore. This has NOT its reason in the seemingly chauvinist meaning of "Deutschland über alles", like many people wrongly think. This whole stanza of the Deutschlandlied isn't sung anymore, because in other parts of the stanza are borders and landscapes mentioned, that aren't German borders and landscapes anymore. We want to live in peace with the people and countries, who are now living in those former German lands and therefore we don't sing about those old borders and landscapes anymore. It has nothing to do with the "Deutschland über alles" line in that stanza, like many people wrongly are thinking. Finally: The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin. I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because: a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄 Greetings Mega
PS: UA-cam didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here: The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform. The SA did all the dirty work at the beginning of the Nazi rise to power...until the "Night of the long knives", an inner-Nazi power struggle, happened. The head of the SA (Ernst Röhm) was killed and from then on the SA was turned more and more into the SS under Himmler. The book burnings were part of the early Nazi years, too, and were done by the SA, too. One can see the SA burning the books and Till is watching it in a brown SA uniform. Both, Kristallnacht and book burnings were different things and happened at different times. The book burnings happened over a longer timespan at different locations at different times during the Kristallnacht was one big "event" that happened at one single day. Kristallnacht means "Crystal Night" and was called that way, because the smashed shop windows of the Jewish shops looked like thousands of crystals on the ground. But in the Rammstein video I've only seen the book burnings. PPS: The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution. Those two beer drinking soldiers are Prussian soldiers and they are emphasizing the importance of Prussia for the German history. As far as I could see: They were from the era of Friedrich der Große (The Old Fritz), who was of extraordinary importance for German history. Amongst many other achievements he was the one, who brought the potato to Prussia and Germany. That saved many Germans from hunger and the potato became one of the most beloved foods in Germany on that way.
@@Metal-never-die1220 The NDH bands are playing Industrial Metal. The label NDH came much later and was more a label for all Industrial Metal bands, who came up in the 1990's. So the NDH label was always more like a label for a time frame than a precise description of the music style those bands played and are still playing.
Thanks for explaining the meaning of all the parts in this video. I really liked the song when it came out, but now it has a different load on it as I'm not really familiar with all the German history that's been shown in this video.
Wow, I have never seen such a beautiful woman like you in my whole life. Your way and your character are so lovable. I can't believe it, shocked in love after the first second."

This video is a VIDEO! Such art! If you want to hear Till's voice in it's pure dark poetic glory: I'd watch the video for "Mein Hertz Brennt" piano version. An opera singer such as yourself would appreciate it!
Imagine Maggie doing a reaction to Mann Gegan Mann or Mein Teil!? Rammstein almost always pushes limits. I think Maggie would thoroughly enjoy Ohne dich. Show's till's sensitive side.
I love Mein Teil! All of their songs are dark, but in terms of both music and subject matter, Mein Teil may be the darkest! I'd love to know Maggie's thoughts on the song and topic! 🍴
@@MichaelTaylor-qp2xf I don’t know. I’d argue that Weiner Blut is darker as subject matter goes, as in the fact that in Mein Teil there was a choice involved i.e. he knew why he was going there and what it will happen and actually actively agreed to it.
Me: "I wonder if there's a music video that captures history from the Tutenberg Forest Massacre to the 21st century that pulls no punches on the triumphs, tragedies, traumas, and terrors through that time." Rammstein: Deutschland
Great reaction! Important message to be shared. We must learn from history. I've only heard one other song by them before this one. I really liked it a lot.
Rammstein is not a band for "sensitive" people, their lyrics always carry a double meaning, I love them because I like freedom of expression and for me they are the best industrial metal band, thanks for the reaction. 💓
I love how you speak about the Importance of History Knowledge to prevent such horrible Things happening again, especially as i am a German who have seen a few Concentration Camps, mainly when i was in the German Air Force and visited a few Unknown Concentration Camps.... Many People know about Auschwitz and some other Concentration Camps, but there were so many others that no One knows about where Things happened i dont´t wanna talk about... :(
Rammsteinn is very famous at not avoiding any controversial topics in their songs. You'd definetely should check out more of their production. The singer Till Lindemann is also a poet, which really shows in the lyrics of Rammsteinn. Like a dark, twisted yet eerily beautyful poetry they are.
The song is about having a love/hate relationship with Germany. They want to love it for the good things and because it's their country, but it's also done so many terrible things through time, that there is an internal conflict over how they feel for Germany. Everything in the video is symbolic of something deeper, and is not there, simply for shock value. Requires knowing or learning about the history of Germany. Maggie, you should react to more Rammstein videos, soon.
The line Deutschland Deutschland über allen (Germany Germany over all) is a reference to the first, and nowadays forbidden, verse of the german national anthem
I really appreciate everyone who watches Rammstein for an audience, thank you. To bad there was not much for you to say professionaly, but then again, crazy vocals are not what Rammstein is about in my mind. This song particulary has a special place in my soul as a german history buff. Though it has not a terrible lot of lyrics but those that are there hit the spot right on, really hard, in a way that is very hard to understand if you don't speak the language and have not grown up here (or so i would imagine). How he sings the line "so jung und doch so alt" alone fills me with a profound sadness every time... Edit: Yeah, while i absoluteli love Rammstein, i don't think they are very well suited for what you are trying to do with this channel. i would appreciate more of it anyway ;) One of my personal favourite woulf be "Haifisch" for the lyrics mainly. Or the "Mann gegen Mann" video, though that would probably be... to much xD (but has a great meaning as well). Just be advised that for whatever reason the more accessible translations usually suck, i don' know why...
The wholle point is like you say, "History must not be forgoten", they made this to face the fact that for germans, this is a hard topic, and dhe WWII is almost a tabu.
This is certainly not a taboo subject in Germany. Quite the opposite. WWII is constantly discussed in great depth in Germany. And the average German knows much more about what happened and for what reasons and with what consequences than the vast majority of people from other countries know about it. The Germans certainly do not forget what happened. I am not so sure about other nationalities.
Rammstein is amazing and Till has such a strong accent which makes them so intriguing. I think you should react to 'Morgenstern' 'Mein Herz Brent' (the piano version) or 'Engel'
Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: introducing Germania Rammstein’s Deutschland takes us on a thrilling, violent, and moving journey through German history. At over nine minutes, it gives us a panorama of events and historical and mythical figures, and there are so many references and Easter eggs that fans and commentators will be poring over it for some time to come. The video opens in AD 16, on the ‘barbarian’ side of the limes, the border of the Roman Empire. Roman soldiers creep through the woods in the aftermath of the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. The Romans were ambushed by an alliance of Germanic Tribes, led by a chieftain called Arminius (the original Hermann the German). Three legionary standards were captured, a loss symbolic and moral, as well as physical, and decades were spent trying to recover them. Rome never again attempted to take the lands east of the River Rhine, known as Germania. ‘Germania’ refers not just to a place, somewhere partly defined by where it isn’t (Rome) as well as where it is, but also to a national figurehead, traditionally representing the German people. Germania (opens in new tab) is a strong woman, usually armour-clad and battle-ready. Various symbols appear with her, among them a breastplate with an eagle, a black, red, and gold flag, and a crown. Look out for these in the video - they come up again and again - and the colours of the contemporary flag are there in every scene. We get our first glimpse of Germania here (played by Ruby Commey), who stands holding Till Lindemann’s severed head. Next, astronauts appear carrying a metal and glass box shaped like a coffin. In the background we see a U-boat - a German submarine, used in World Wars I and II. Then we move to a scene set at a boxing match which takes us to Weimar Germany (1918-1933), a period known for its political instability but also greater cultural liberalism. Here, Germania appears in the cabaret costume of a flapper girl, and the boxers fight with knuckle-dusters as a crowd cheers them on. Rammstein Deutschland video still Ruby Commey as Germania Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: Marx, Lenin and the GDR We see the former East Germany, complete with busts of Marx and Lenin, the national emblem of East Germany (opens in new tab), and a lookalike of the long-serving, insular, and repressive GDR leader Erich Honecker. There’s another astronaut, or rather a cosmonaut: Sigmund Jähn, the first German in space, who flew with the USSR’s space program (and who’s also a character in the 2003 film, Good Bye Lenin!). Medieval monks feast grotesquely on the supine Germania, tearing sauerkraut and sausage from Ruby Commey’s body, prison inmates are beaten by guards dressed in police and military uniforms from different historical periods. The most obviously shocking scene references the Holocaust and the Nazi period. Four members of the band, in the striped uniforms of camp inmates, wait at the gallows, about to be hanged. They wear the cloth emblems used to identify their ‘crimes’: a pink triangle for homosexual prisoners, a yellow star for Jewish prisoners, a red and yellow star for Jewish political prisoners. This sequence, teased in an earlier promo video, has already caused controversy. Have Rammstein the right to do this? Do they trivialise the suffering of Holocaust victims? How can they justify using Holocaust imagery to promote their new video? These are important questions that are part of a much bigger debate about the ethics of using the Holocaust in art and media. Other scenes include the band walking away from a flaming airship, referring to the 1937 Hindenburg Disaster, in which 36 people died. Rats scuttle across the floor when the monks first appear, suggesting the Pied Piper of Hamelin, a legend with origins in the 13th century. Germania walks towards the camera in a leather jacket, gold jewellery and a string of bullets across her chest, resembling the chariot drawn by four horses (the ‘Quadriga’) on top of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. The band members’ heads are shown as white marble busts, taking us to the 19th century Walhalla memorial in Bavaria, built as German Hall of Fame, its sculpted heads of German worthies on display to this day. In the prison, hundreds of banknotes fall from above, suggesting the devastating hyperinflation Germany suffered in the 1920s. Nazis burn books, intercut with religious fanatics burning witches. We recognise members of the Red Army Faction (also known as the Baader-Meinhof group), a militant organisation active in the 1970s in West Germany. And in a blink-or-you-miss-it exchange, we are reminded of the much-criticised relationship between the churches and the state during the Third Reich. Rammstein Deutschland video still Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: the finale Each scene captures in a moment the icons of an era, and the video cuts between them more and more frenetically as it goes on. Events bleed into each other, linked by the presence of the band members and the red laser beam that appears throughout the video, a ‘roter Faden’ (red thread or central theme), connecting each event. Germany engages with its history in a very particular way. Try to imagine the video about Britain, with Britannia played by Ruby Commey. What would the equivalent events be? Quite a few of the tableaux might be similar - Romans, Crusaders, monks, 18th-century soldiers, collarless shirts and bareknuckle boxing - but would it have the same impact? There’s no affection, and perhaps not much hope: its pessimistic tone seems to be quite an off-brand message for post-1989 Germany, which wants to acknowledge its past critically, while also looking to its future as a state at the heart of Europe. And actually, while we get a lot of medieval and twentieth-century history, the video’s tour through the past seems to stop in the late 1980s, before the fall of the Berlin Wall and Reunification of East and West Germany. Instead, we jump into the future, where the space-suited band take Germania into the unknown, travelling in that coffin-shaped glass box. There’s an echo of the video for Sonne, where Snow White is trapped in a glass coffin. In fact, a piano version of Sonne plays over the end credits of Deutschland. This is a useful link for understanding something of what Rammstein is doing here. In Sonne, where the band’s characters free themselves of Snow White (naturally, they’ve been her sex-slaves), only to realise that they have made a mistake and long for her return, the overwhelming feeling of Deutschland seems to be that when it comes to Germania (or Germany): you can’t love her, and you can’t live without her. PS: I did not write the comment myself the Credit for it goes to: Ingovonderluhe174 i just copyied for you, cause he did the best explanation that i saw on YouToube!
Another band that I've only recently discovered and, wow! I can't stop listening to them. Till is a wonderful singer/ performer - surely he is capable of carrying a movie ? - and the band are phenomenal. Singing in German totally works, wouldn't be half as good in English. Tremendous sense of humour in some of the videos - the little tear in the blanket right at the end of Benzine is hilarious - and then others that are works of art, like Deutschland and Ohne Dich. Danke Rammstein, please keep going. Mark Crosbie, Isle of Man
It's rough but I like that they don't sugar coat anything. How amazing is the lady who played Germania? Also I first noticed that everything was almost totally filmed with red, black & gold. Very smart. I think this could be done in school tbh
I could write a PHD thesis on this video alone. It would require constant access to the video to point out which scene and lyrics line I were to comment on. I wouldn't know for which curriculum but there is more than enough to write several hundred pages including quotes in there. There is just soooo much in this video. History (both symbolic as well as real), societal, political, religious, and social background commentary on multiple levels, symbolism, you name it. The only thing is that the actual music itsself is not too complex. But that is part of what Rammstein themselves have said during an interview: "We wanted to make somewhat repetetive music." As you have probably noticed, barely any scene lasts longer than a few seconds, some even jump from cut to cut within a second or less. Often a scene is cut to the next scene to comment as appropriate to the feeling they wish to convey. Some scenes are comments on a full line in the lyrics, some on only a single word. Without a lot of background knowledge about Germany's (in all its incarnations) violent history throughout the millenia it is difficult to describe what is commented on. You may say a lot about Rammstein, the only thing far from the truth would be that they were fascists, or even moderately right-leaning. Despite their appearances on stage or their intentionally extremly crisp over-emphasis of the German pronunciation, they are fairly regular guys with pretty normal lives, not excessive or extreme during their daily lives. Oh, and their videos are rarely boring. Their stage shows are (for the medium and target group they are delivering for) are OFF(!) THE(!) CHARTS!
I'm more of a folk metal bands (bands like bloodywood or Arka'n Asrafokor are my poison) but I do gotta Give it to Rammstein they do know how to make a spectacle!
This is an excellent video in that it is well crafted to tell a story, but the song itself is not very representative of the band’s sound. Engel, Sonne, Mein Hertz Brennt or Rammlied are much better starting points for a Rammstein journey of discovery.
"Deutschland, Deutschland über alles" are words from the German national anthem that were in fact in the anthem of the Third Reich. There is symbolism here.
Ah yes, Rammstein. Reminds me of working overnight doing tech support for one of the major computer companies in the 90s. My friend and current room mate and I got on our internal messenger proggie one slow night and started a contest of mis-translating Du Hast lyrics into English. He won with, "I'm depressed, I'm so depressed. Going to stick my head in the oven. Too bad it's electric." So many memories. We had fun in those days with our morbid sense of humor.
Since we are in germany now (music wise) i would like to suggest an interesting german band by the name "Van Canto". They are a metal band, that had spent all their money on drums and microphones, leaving no money for other instruments, so they became an "acapella-metal-band" + drums.
Hi! Maybe an additional tip from me for this reaction, if I may: Watch out, that you aren't reacting to an inofficial short version with English subtitles, that ruins many reactions to the Deutschland video here on UA-cam. Sombebody made an unofficial video with English lyrics-subtitles...but cut away the whole, relative long and important beginning and the whole, relative long, end with the very moving piano part and reduced the video basically to the part, where the "boom boom" is happening. Many reactors wanted to read the English lyrics and have unfortunately reacted to this mutilated cut short version without realizing it. Greetings Mega
I find German history incredibly fascinating because the Germans and Germany were always there, but at the same time not and always different like a shapeshifter. Stupid oversimplified: Rejects Roman annexation - Germanic Tribes defeat Rome, are often slapped in the face, but Rome generally fails to subdue them Creates an empire that wasn't really an empire but also was an empire and somehow lived for over 1000 years - very special and unique The Kingdom of Prussia and hundreds of German States gangsta! Before being defeated by one of history's greatest generals. defeats the French, unites into a new empire Get a colonial empire Fights 80% of the world alone and almost won.. Is treated badly Comeback as Villian, fights the whole world and only lost because of own mistakes.. Gets divided again Reunites again and is not allowed to be strong again. Also a few German inventions: - Incandescent lamps (Heinrich Göbel 1854) - The Telephone (Johann Philip Reis 1859) - The dynamo and tram (Werner von Siemens 1866) - The 35 mm camera (Oskar Barnack 1925) - Nuclear fission and atomic bomb (Otto Hahn - emigrated to the Americans during Nazi Germany - 1938) - The ship chart (Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Gröttrub 1969) - Periodic Table (Julius Luther Meyer 1864) - Jeans (Levi Strauss 1873) - The recorder, player - with which the first films were possible (Emil Berliner 1887) - The Aspirin - Which all great athletes felt used to relieve pain, And which saved countless lives (Felix Hoffmann, Klausi Alder.. 1879) - Spark plug (Robert Bosch 1902) - Thermos flask (Reinhold Burger 1903) - the toothpaste (Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg) - The coffee filter (Melitta Bentz) - Cassette recorder (Fritz Pfleumer 1928) - Teabag (Adolf Rambold 1929) - The jet engines - Essential for all jets and rockets + First war rockets V1, V2 of the Nazis (Hans von Ohain 1929) - First rocket (in general, Hans von Ohain) - The helicopter (Heinrich Focke 1936) - The first car (Carl Benz - With honorary Schnauzer - 1886) - First Computer (Konrad Zuse 1941) - First 3D film (during the Third Reich) - Fanta (Yes THAT Fanta.. Also during the Nazi era) - The typewriter (Peter Mitterhofer - 1869) - NASA (actually the US buyed thousands of German engineers to build NASA because they can't do it themselves) The first letterpress Mashine (Which was probably the best invention of all time because now they could start printing books, Johannes Gutenberg - 1440) - the trigger of the gold rush (Johann August Sutter was a Swiss but actually German since he was born in Germany, but Swiss and German are one blood anyway, Who triggered the gold rush in America. Not an inventor but cool fact - 1848) Well, as you saw, the Germans changed the world with their inventions many times. Where we would be today without the German art of thinking. Germany the land of poets and thinkers - that's how it was known (Actually) The problem is that many Germans are not proud of their country and blood, unfortunately also because they were brought up that way. Because if you say anything to that effect, you will be called a Nazi. The problem is that many people don't have the right deep historical knowledge that people need to understand the world and and that only Hitler himself and his party were Nazis. Almost no German was a Nazi during the Nazi era. Also, any historian will tell you that the Allies, created Nazi Germany and WWII because of the unfair Versailles Treaty. Germans were so depressed that it is unimaginable for us. They were seen as evil around the world as they were blamed for everything in World War I. And when you have 3 kids at home, no job, money is worthless and no food and water you will follow anyone who fixes it. Because that's what the Nazis did in the beginning - they fixed everything and gave the Germans hope again. No German at the time could have known that Hitler was so crazy. It's not as easy as we always think. Even in the Wehrmacht, only a few liked the Nazis. They were German soldiers dying for the country. the general German soldier, like my grandfather, had nothing to do with the Nazis and the Holocaust. You must consider this one army fought against the rest of the world. And if we are honest: what kind of "peace" could the general German soldier expect? What could have they expect after all the Nazi crimes and everyone thought that all Germans were evil Nazis. What "Peace" could they expect. These soldiers fought for their lives and German people against a planet. If even many of Hitler's own generals like Rommel (legend) or Stauffenberg knew that he was not quite right in the head.. Then the normal people knew that even more. Many were manipulated and could do nothing about it. The Nazis were a small parasite not the Germans. You can imagine the Nazis like a natural dark Parasite Rising from the suffering of the Germans. And the 'Problem' is that Germans are People who have a very special work and perfectionism mentality. That's not a weak enemy. Calling all German soldiers Nazis is like calling all American soldiers democrats because they were in power. We should be prouder of ourselves, after all, Germany has repeatedly fought against the entire world, one time under a bad regime. We made this modern world possible and maintain a reputation for perfection and quality. The hard-working German with perfection in his blood! Or rather, we once had this reputation. Today there is no longer a country of poets and thinkers. We are still occupied by the USA. And people are manipulated and have no prospects. A dark age. What I also find very interesting is that the Germanic people spread very far and are therefore the ancestors of many other people. Therefore, historians are not entirely sure how German the Germanic peoples were, but since they were the first to speak German and also created English, they were already German. In addition, the Germans were also the ancestors of the Vikings means Germanic mythology is almost identical to Norse mythology. Actually the same. Thanks for listening 🥂 I would be in favor of not only teaching the Americans that Germany is the bad guy and that they really deal with it. Most of the settlers who came to America at that time were German. Over 40 million. That's why you have so many German names. That's why the Americans love German culture and are surrounded by it, but don't want to admit it. Every "your" fairy tale was recorded and reinvented by the Brothers Grimm, they were German. But the Americans didn't understand the original meaning behind the brutal children's fairy tales and weakened them. That shows you how stupid most of them actually are over there. It was always about raising children. If they have something on their mind and are afraid of it, they remember it. It also hardened the children. Even though we no longer live in times when war is normal, the world hasn't gotten any easier.. But that's why we're talking about Germany, the land of poets and thinkers, and not America. The Americans would be nothing without the German thinkers and craftsmen. The Germans always had these brilliant ideas.. Which makes me doubt whether they are actually all the same. Almost every big ami company or rich family comes from Germans. If you look at history and see that wherever the Germans went, something big happened. The world was then populated by German emigrants. But since there was no unified Germany or Germany in general at the time, there were only German states or kingdoms such as Austria, Bavaria, Switzerland. There was no national immigration. Just like in America. But something big was still happening everywhere. All over the world I see people talking about German books and poems and the culture that shaped them as children. Tyll Ulenspiegel is an example. I find it very interesting. We should talk about it and explain it.. But no, you want to forget that and not admit who the great ones are. How many already know that their car, computer and almost everything they use comes from Germany. We don't talk about that.. But about a madman who manipulated the Germans.. Which was extremely easy since it was the worst crisis Germany had ever had. The Allies created Nazi Germany. Everyone always wonders how the Germans could do something like that. Look at something like ww1 We always look at ww1 from the Allied perspective. We are brought up and manipulated according to this image. Nobody looks at it from the German perspective. Germany fought 80% of the world. ALONE. With damn incompetent allies. The Frenchman can talk well with the British, Americans, Belgians, Russians and the entire British Commonwealth behind him. The Versailles Treaty was more than a disgrace. You expect them to fight 80% of the world fairly? Many don't realize that. And at the same time they had to contend with the British blockade. And we're talking about the bad bad Germans? You lose everything in ww1 and then in "peace" time your people will be treated like shit. Everyone hated the Germans after ww1 because of allied propaganda. Although the Allies destroyed many more civilian ships with their blockade. But we don't talk about that. what is the wage? An Ultimate Crisis. Money was worthless.. And if you have no food, no Water and job you will turn to anyone who promises to fix it. The depression in Germany after World War I was twice as high as in America today and then people wonder why they followed Hitler so easily. No wonder when you destroy the most powerful country in the world in science, military and pride and leave it to starve in the ashes.. There will be a growing hate. And yes, Hitler was a sick man. But evil is not born. And he didn't just say wrong things either.. Many wrong things.. The Nazis helped in the beginning.. Of course the Germans couldn't knew that Hitler was such a crazy man. And at some point it was to late. There was also a big difference between Nazi, German and Wehrmacht soldier.
_>These soldiers fought for their lives and German_ Да-да, всё именно так и было. Почти верю. Почти ;) _>We are still occupied by the USA_ Ну, хоть кто-то это понимает.
I read simewhere that in the hanging scene Germania has eye patch first on right eye and few sevonds later over left eye, meant hiw these happenings had a blind eye turned to them.
The song is about how they want to love their country but it’s hard for them because of German history. As they say, they want to love them but also hate them. Scenes like the holocaust and all those über- words is a comment on this exact fact. He prefaced this part by literally saying “And I want to hate you.”
People need to not read and believe what they learn in school and educate themselves. The stories from history we “learn” aren’t always the truth. Great video.
When people truly love their country they have to love it for everything it is The Good, The Bad and The indifferent. You have to understand what they've done right in the past try to fix what they've done wrong and ask questions about why they didn't act during a time of crisis.
The credits song is the piano version from their album XXI - Klavier which is composed of similar piano versions of many of their popular songs. It's really good, though probably best enjoyed after you're familiar with their other work.
I've been an exchange student who has studied history in the United States, the classes I took were really good, but clearly, college and high school level history classes are worlds apart. If learning about history makes you queasy, you have not learned enough about history as it is. Human history, as it turns out, is dominated by humans killing and butchering each other over the tiniest of disagreements. German history certainly sticks out, but there undoubtedly are plenty of "yikes" moments in any other nation's history as well.
Rammstein has a great interpretation of a Disney Movie :) Snow white and the 7 dwarfs. Its actually the Song Sonne which is the Piano at the end :D Rammstein- Sonne Official Video and you have a kidna Disney movie
The Germany above everything line is actually from the original national anthem( that part got banned after ww2 cuz Germans sometimes sang it marching into other countries I think)
A lot of people do not understand the scenes with the dogs. This breed of dogs are not German Shepards, but Leonberger. This breed of dog narrowly escaped extinction during the First and Second World Wars and is symbolic of the German people, whose existence was also strongly threatened in those wars - both now have a second existential chance. The whole Video will understand only Historians and Germans and these people also have to watch the video several times. The song is about the ambivalent relationship of Rammstein and many Germans to their country, because of the violent and cruel history with extensive human crimes, especially in recent history. Therefore the video features various events from German history, including Roman times, the Middle Ages, witch hunting and burning, Protestant Reformation, the November Revolution, the "Golden Twenties" and hyperinflation, Nazi book burnings, the Hindenburg disaster, the First and Second World Wars, the Holocaust, the Weimar Republic, the Red Army Fraction (violent anti-capitalist terror alliance of young people and students against Nazis in high state and economy positions in post-war Germany), and the division of the country into West and East Germany including the Uprising June 17 in East Germany. The black woman represents Germany, sometimes as a victim, but mostly as a perpetrator. With her black skin she is also a provocation to all stupid racists The Holocaust was for this reason the greatest human crime because it was the first industrially organized mass murder in human history, by a country that was culturally at its highest point at this time in the world and called itself the country of poets and thinkers. But it is precisely the high cultural and scientific level of Germany that unfortunately caused others to be viewed as subhuman who can be killed without pity, just like animals. Seeing other people as inferior has always brought a lot of suffering to people
you have an ear for awesome music Maggie! but I couldn't help myself, 8:08 its; "NEEDLESS" LOVE, NOT NEEDLES! lol all the best hun, happy 2023! and yes! 11:03, I always humbly tell my firefighting crew on training day that; "a lesson can't be learnt until a mistake has been made". stay humble!
the scene with the puppies born by the personification of Germania likely reffers to the dog race Leonberger wich was almost extinct during the first and second world war but recovered thanks to the Club für Deutsche Leonberger Hunder (Club for German Leonberger Dogs) that was founded in 1948. video can be hard to understand. i know.
Brilliant reaction Maggie. Should watch Du Hast live in Paris . Also would love to see you react to 5 finger death punch - Wrong side of heaven. Keep up the awesome vids Maggie
Who should I watch and react to next?
Sabaton - Unkillabel Soldier
With Tatiana in the US and the rest of the band in Kyiv either organizing aid or getting ready for the Russian assault on the city, please react to Jinjer's "Home Back". It is a more poignant song now than it ever has been. 🌻💙💛
Saltatio Mortis - My mother told me.
J.D. Sumner! Wayfaring Stranger!
Beth Hart - Am i The One (Live at Paradiso) : ). You will be surprised!
EVERYTHING by Rammstein is symbolic and deep!
only the trench needs to be deep......Also they are highly inflammable and explosive 😂
Literally 🤣🤣 (rammstein - pussy uncut music video)🤣
Rammstein - TE QUIERO PUTA!
Well...the songs "te quiero puta" and "pussy" exist, so maybe not everything.
Even their "goofy" songs like Dicke Titten
Still has great symbolic meaning 👍
Many European bands will sing their songs in English to appeal to a larger global audience. Nightwish. Scorpions. Europe. Helloween. Accept. Warlock.
Rammstein is unapologetically German. They make you work for it. How can you not love that?
The HAVE recorded a few songs partially (or wholely) in English like Engel, amerika, and Du Hast. But they are still unapologetically German.
"Unapologetically German" may be the best phrase I've ever heard to describe Rammstein.
I often forget they did English versions of Engel and Du Hast. I preferred the German versions over the English, despite not speaking any German. Something just feels off in translated recordings.
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you today for my LIVE stream reaction to Scorpions in 2 hours?
Well it works for them. They are basically the only band singing in German that is so huge in Poland or France and people actually understand the lyrics (even if they have to check them online). So never change Rammstein, no English please.
Du Hast (German), and Du Haßt (English) is not the same song, nor the same spelling, nor meaning, but is still pronounced the same, also, the it's same music. Du Hast is "You Have" and is about a marriage proposal. Du Haßt "You Hate" and is about a spiteful, dissolving relationship.
I think every national anthem should be as honest like this.
yeah i cant see a national anthem anywhere ever saying they cant give their country their love lmfao
@@ceevee1646 You don't get it. Sad.
«... Deutschland über alle...» is a direct reference to german anthem - first stanza -, «...Über alles in der Welt...», above all in the world.
This is not the national anthem. The actual anthem is much much more glorifying.
About at the time this came out our Bundespräsident came with a quote, that said (in translation), One can only love this country with a broken heart.
Seems pretty much what this song is about.
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you tomorrow on my Premiere of a new reaction video to Jeannie C Riley?
As much as I love and appreciate their official videos, rammstein is definitely one of those bands you want to watch their live stuff. They put on a SHOW!
Something phenomenal about the songwriting in this song is the callbacks to ramstein's previous catalog
Du hast.
Ich will.
Mein Herz brennt
And on Sonne, the big blast is on four. "vier!"
I saw noone else point it out, but using Ruby Commey as "Germania" in this video is a stroke of genius, it drove the right-wing nutters insane and it helped the accusations of neonazism that was- as usual- levelled against the band.
not to mention she is stunning and plays the role well.
Forsure, but also having black skin, with red lipstick and golden armor gives a pretty good figure for germany
@@ochala9541 very. And she is stunning.
she also as pointed out with her skin color, the gold and red she wears represents the german flag,
He wants to love Germany, but its history makes it hard is the gist of the song.
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you at the Premiere of my new reaction video to NIGHTWISH tomorrow?
@@maggiereneemusic nightwish...lol🤢🤮

"There cannabilsm scene is in the Middle Age"
Roman time ≠ Holy Roman Empire
Holy Roman Empire ist das Heilige Römische Reich Deutscher Nation, welches 962 mit der Krönung Otto I begründet und 1806 mit der Niederlegung der Reichskrone durch Kaiser Franz II beendet wurde.
Das Mittelalter endetet übrigens mit dem 15. Jhdt.

Greetings from Middle Germany. ;)
i think the symbolism is more about religion feeding off the country, than hoy roman empire . The first thing I thought about was the religion wars during the 1500's
@@valeriomartino1638 yes, i agree .
I love the band's middle finger to people who say they support naz!!sm with having Ruby Commey play Germania.
This brings back so many memories from when I FINALLY got to see Rammstein live in 2019 after being a huge fan of them for over 10 years, hands down THE best live show I have ever been to, it was absolutely incredible!
I don't even like rammstein but this is probably the best music video I've ever seen
Hi this is a copy paste and i think it really helps to understand the meaning of the song=
German is my first language - so as a native pls let me explain as concise as possible many of the hidden symbols and meanings in this great song: In advance - please apologize the mistakes that I have certainly made as English is not my first language :-)
Before I go through it just some general remarks: the black lady’s persona in the video is “Germania” and she represents Germany (the nation / the people) and in many scenes where she appears the colors black, red and gold (colors of the German flag) are dominant.
The red laser beams throughout the video I think are guiding thread (German expression “roter Faden”" translates to “red thread” and translates to guiding principle / guideline of a story)
When Germania (black lady) in golden armor (black red gold as main colors of the scene pushes the standard into the ground she raises all the dead medieval knights - a reference to the strength of the German people who recovered time after time throughout history from catastrophes (especially, but not only) in the middle ages (crusades, Hunnic invasion, plague, etc.) - the additional meaning i think is the fact that German people several times followed their countries call for War - even if they were already beaten up (e.g. after WWI going into WWII)
Next scene (fistfight) is from the roaring twenties, the period between the two world wars where upper class society was decadent on the backs of ordinary people + entertainment industry was born.
Finally, please find below the lyrics of the song as the perfectly convey the message of the problematic relationship many Germans have to their homeland, wanting to be proud of it but not being able to due to it’s difficult history:
One further remark to one of the more important lines of the lyrics: The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) refers to the fact that the German people with their idenitify have been around for thousands of years, however the actual state of Germany as a nation was only founded very late (1871) thorough the unification of several mini states (Prussia, Hessia, Saxonia, Bavaria, etc.)

They don't sing that specific line in every live performance of 'Deutschland' I've seen. Didn't do it at their gig here in Aarhus in June either.

That phrase is PROHIBITED in Germany because it is a reference to the Nazis.
This video is insanely brilliant. It takes through the whole history of Germany and to put it in nutshell Rammstein describes the horrible history of their home country and the need of national pride which they cannot have!
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you tomorrow on my Premiere of a new reaction video to Jeannie C Riley?
The meaning of this is the duality between loving your country but feeling guilty for it’s atrocities. You want to love it but it’s dark history makes it hard to do so. You’d feel guilt to love your own country.
Another powerful line is “One who climbs high will fall low. Germany, Germany above all (Everybody)” which implies germany thought itself greater than everyone else to the point it hit rock bottom. An icarus and his wax wings kind of metaphor
Rammstein is definitely a rabbit hole you need to go down
The imagery is heavy and dark, but it makes you look at things from a different view... Imagine having your homeland be a place of hate and evil... It's got to be hard
I'm a native southerner who's childhood was during the last gasps of Jim Crow. I know. Americans can't be too judgemental about Germany.
The line in this song "So jung und doch so alt" (So young and yet so old) means:
Germany as a unified state is very young.
Finally:
The scenes I'm now talking about are pretty dark and low light. The WWII submarine in the submarine bunker during the astronauts are walking by with the glass coffin.
I think, the choice of the black woman as main actress was made, because:
a) it makes any accusations of racism and fascism against Rammstein useless
b) she represents one colour of the German flag and she is wearing the rest of the colours of our German flag as makeup and jewellery and clothes on her body: Black, Red and Gold
c) it provokes many people EVEN MORE 😄
Greetings
Mega
PS: UA-cam didn't allow me to integrate this information into the bigger text (above) for unknown reasons, therefore I'm posting it here:
The troops, who smashed the Jewish shops during the Kristallnacht (not shown in the video) were SA (Sturmabteilung) in brown uniform and not the later SS (Schutzstaffel) in the black uniform.
PPS:
The two beer drinking soldiers to the left side of the table, where Germania is lying on and where the priests are eating Sauerkraut & Sausages from her body, are not French soldiers and they aren't representing the French revolution.

So the NDH label was always more like a label for a time frame than a precise description of the music style those bands played and are still playing.

The greatest rabbit hole, PERIOD!
Edit: Yeah, while i absoluteli love Rammstein, i don't think they are very well suited for what you are trying to do with this channel. i would appreciate more of it anyway ;)
One of my personal favourite woulf be "Haifisch" for the lyrics mainly. Or the "Mann gegen Mann" video, though that would probably be... to much xD (but has a great meaning as well). Just be advised that for whatever reason the more accessible translations usually suck, i don' know why...
Do more Rammstein. It's worth it
Greetings from Germany ✌🏼
Es ist wichtig, dass die wirkliche Geschichte gezeigt wird, nur so können wir daraus lernen für die Zukunft
The wholle point is like you say, "History must not be forgoten", they made this to face the fact that for germans, this is a hard topic, and dhe WWII is almost a tabu.
WWII is not a tabu topic in germany in my experience. Most Germans I know talk very openly about it, and it is rehersed in schools in gr8 detail.
WWII is a tabu in germany? Whaaaat? Uhm, no.
The imagery of everyone feeding on the body of Germania says it all. 🤘
This is THE best reaction to that Rammstein clip I ever seen... Cheers.
Saw this group live and wow I am 54 and have seen plenty of shows but Rammstein moved me more than any other band.
Great CHOICE ❤ MAGGIE 😊. Thanks for sharing your analysis and review. Merry Christmas 🎁 2022’
Oh man, this punshing drums of Christoph "Doom" Schneider!! I love it!
Rammstein is amazing and Till has such a strong accent which makes them so intriguing. I think you should react to 'Morgenstern' 'Mein Herz Brent' (the piano version) or 'Engel'
OK, I make it short, Zeit, Zick Zack and Angst. Absolutely Masterpieces! Very deep, you should read a good translation, the lyrics are wonderful
All of German history in one song
Doesn’t matter, I’ll watch you react to soap operas. Love seeing your smile.

Live reactions tonight 3/12 at 6PM starting here on YT. Hope you can join!
The song is essentially about how they struggle to love their country because of the history that's shaped it.
This has to be the heaviest song I have heard from them almost heart breaking
Donaukinder is heavy mooded song too
I saw them live when they were unknown and opening for KMFDM. Honestly, it was a small venue and one of my top 5 shows of all time.
Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: introducing Germania
Rammstein’s Deutschland takes us on a thrilling, violent, and moving journey through German history.

Ruby Commey as Germania
Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: Marx, Lenin and the GDR
We see the former East Germany, complete with busts of Marx and Lenin, the national emblem of East Germany (opens in new tab), and a lookalike of the long-serving, insular, and repressive GDR leader Erich Honecker.
Rammstein Deutschland video still
Rammstein's Deutschland video explained: the finale
Each scene captures in a moment the icons of an era, and the video cuts between them more and more frenetically as it goes on.
PS: I did not write the comment myself the Credit for it goes to:
Ingovonderluhe174 i just copyied for you, cause he did the best explanation that i saw on YouToube!
An absolutley masterpiece.
A true 'rock opera' in video format.
But that is part of what Rammstein themselves have said during an interview: "We wanted to make somewhat repetetive music."
As you have probably noticed, barely any scene lasts longer than a few seconds, some even jump from cut to cut within a second or less.
Thanks for running the credits all the way through. Many youtube reactors skip that part.
Live reactions tonight 3/12 at 6PM here on YT if you want to see more Maggie :D
I'm more of a folk metal bands (bands like bloodywood or Arka'n Asrafokor are my poison) but I do gotta Give it to Rammstein they do know how to make a spectacle!
We don't learn anything from our mistakes ... NEVER‼️😏
This is an excellent video in that it is well crafted to tell a story, but the song itself is not very representative of the band’s sound.
Welcome to Rammstein. You don't listen to them, you EXPERIENCE it.
Since we are in germany now (music wise) i would like to suggest an interesting german band by the name "Van Canto". They are a metal band, that had spent all their money on drums and microphones, leaving no money for other instruments, so they became an "acapella-metal-band" + drums.
if you ever get the chance to see them live (I did last fall 🙂 do NOT hesitate--- it's F***** AMAZING!!!
Great reaction. Love it. Pls watch more Rammstein especialy live videos. You won´t be dissapointed. Greetings from Czech Republic.
Thank you for your lovely comment. Hope to see you later today for my FUN Reactions Livestream?
This one has been away Ms Rene. We are gladdened to see you have endured. Thank you for the video.
This your first rammstein reaction??? Girl you have been missing out!
Hi!
Maybe an additional tip from me for this reaction, if I may:
Watch out, that you aren't reacting to an inofficial short version with English subtitles, that ruins many reactions to the Deutschland video here on UA-cam.
Greetings
Mega
I find German history incredibly fascinating because the Germans and Germany were always there, but at the same time not and always different like a shapeshifter.
Stupid oversimplified:
Rejects Roman annexation - Germanic Tribes defeat Rome, are often slapped in the face, but Rome generally fails to subdue them
Creates an empire that wasn't really an empire but also was an empire and somehow lived for over 1000 years - very special and unique
The Kingdom of Prussia and hundreds of German States gangsta! Before being defeated by one of history's greatest generals.
defeats the French, unites into a new empire
Get a colonial empire
Fights 80% of the world alone and almost won..
Is treated badly
Comeback as Villian, fights the whole world and only lost because of own mistakes..
Gets divided again
Reunites again and is not allowed to be strong again.
Also a few German inventions:
- Incandescent lamps (Heinrich Göbel 1854)
- The Telephone (Johann Philip Reis 1859)
- The dynamo and tram (Werner von Siemens 1866)
- The 35 mm camera (Oskar Barnack 1925)
- Nuclear fission and atomic bomb (Otto Hahn - emigrated to the Americans during Nazi Germany - 1938)
- The ship chart (Jürgen Dethloff and Helmut Gröttrub 1969)
- Periodic Table (Julius Luther Meyer 1864)
- Jeans (Levi Strauss 1873)
- The recorder, player - with which the first films were possible (Emil Berliner 1887)
- The Aspirin - Which all great athletes felt used to relieve pain, And which saved countless lives (Felix Hoffmann, Klausi Alder.. 1879)
- Spark plug (Robert Bosch 1902)
- Thermos flask (Reinhold Burger 1903)
- the toothpaste (Ottomar Heinsius von Mayenburg)
- The coffee filter (Melitta Bentz)
- Cassette recorder (Fritz Pfleumer 1928)
- Teabag (Adolf Rambold 1929)
- The jet engines - Essential for all jets and rockets + First war rockets V1, V2 of the Nazis (Hans von Ohain 1929)
- First rocket (in general, Hans von Ohain)
- The helicopter (Heinrich Focke 1936)
- The first car (Carl Benz - With honorary Schnauzer - 1886)
- First Computer (Konrad Zuse 1941)
- First 3D film (during the Third Reich)
- Fanta (Yes THAT Fanta.. Also during the Nazi era)
- The typewriter (Peter Mitterhofer - 1869)
- NASA (actually the US buyed thousands of German engineers to build NASA because they can't do it themselves)
The first letterpress Mashine (Which was probably the best invention of all time because now they could start printing books, Johannes Gutenberg - 1440)
- the trigger of the gold rush (Johann August Sutter was a Swiss but actually German since he was born in Germany, but Swiss and German are one blood anyway, Who triggered the gold rush in America. Not an inventor but cool fact - 1848)
Well, as you saw, the Germans changed the world with their inventions many times. Where we would be today without the German art of thinking.
Germany the land of poets and thinkers - that's how it was known (Actually)
The problem is that many Germans are not proud of their country and blood, unfortunately also because they were brought up that way.
Thanks for listening 🥂
I would be in favor of not only teaching the Americans that Germany is the bad guy and that they really deal with it.
Look at something like ww1
We always look at ww1 from the Allied perspective.
_>These soldiers fought for their lives and German_
Да-да, всё именно так и было. Почти верю. Почти ;)
_>We are still occupied by the USA_
Ну, хоть кто-то это понимает.
_>A dark age._
If this isn't the best videoclip of all their entire carreer, It's one of The best 3 Of them.
Thank you for your comment. Hope to see you tomorrow on my Premiere of a new reaction video to Jeannie C Riley?

LOVE this girl! She's AWESOME!
this song used to be played in the radio here in germany
People need to not read and believe what they learn in school and educate themselves. The stories from history we “learn” aren’t always the truth. Great video.
When people truly love their country they have to love it for everything it is The Good, The Bad and The indifferent. You have to understand what they've done right in the past try to fix what they've done wrong and ask questions about why they didn't act during a time of crisis.
I hope in the long, original version. Then I am excited! :-)
i hope you are well Maggie and everyone else
Oh Maggie, I so adore your path to different music. Metal in all its genres is a fantastic route!
The credits song is the piano version from their album XXI - Klavier which is composed of similar piano versions of many of their popular songs. It's really good, though probably best enjoyed after you're familiar with their other work.
The song that you're referring to Maggie, was,"Eye Of The Tiger" by Survivor
I've been an exchange student who has studied history in the United States, the classes I took were really good, but clearly, college and high school level history classes are worlds apart. If learning about history makes you queasy, you have not learned enough about history as it is. Human history, as it turns out, is dominated by humans killing and butchering each other over the tiniest of disagreements. German history certainly sticks out, but there undoubtedly are plenty of "yikes" moments in any other nation's history as well.
Greetings from Germany 🥳🇩🇪👍
@Maggie Reneé - You MUST listen to their newest Single "Zeit", that was released a couple of weeks ago.
☮️❤️🔥❤️ .and great video Maggie.
You must try " Mein Herz brennt (Piano version) ". It's a true masterpiece from Rammstein.
I second this!!
so true
Rammstein has a great interpretation of a Disney Movie :) Snow white and the 7 dwarfs. Its actually the Song Sonne which is the Piano at the end :D Rammstein- Sonne Official Video and you have a kidna Disney movie
this video clip gives me chills every time i see it 😮
.... Rammstein.. i grew up with Rammstein.. greets from germany. all love to Rammstein. Enjoy it.
The Germany above everything line is actually from the original national anthem( that part got banned after ww2 cuz Germans sometimes sang it marching into other countries I think)
AHHH WHY DONT SOME REACTORS THINK " ohh they sing a foreign language, maybe i should put subtitles on " ?!?!?
With her black skin she is also a provocation to all stupid racists
The Holocaust was for this reason the greatest human crime because it was the first industrially organized mass murder in human history, by a country that was culturally at its highest point at this time in the world and called itself the country of poets and thinkers.
Keep up the awesome vids Maggie
you should check out the band "Majestica" and their song "beyond the sky" his vocals are insane
