THE STRANGLERS - Surrey University, Guildford (19/10/78) - COMPLETE & CLEAN STEREO

- Опубліковано 20 гру 2021
- This is the best quality version of The Stranglers show at Surrey University currently available, uploaded from my place just two minutes walk from where they played their first ever show.
The footage I've used here was mostly uploaded by UA-camr STEVE DINSDALE but I have taken Ugly from an upload by LEEDSOK1 (as it doesn't have the timestamp on it) and Hanging Around from SCOTTISH TEEVEE (likewise). I have used the original stereo mixing desk recording and cleaned the sound so it's better than ever before, and hiss-free. I've then synchronised that to the surviving footage (not easy when the mixing desk recording was made on tape and is therefore not exactly the same speed).
It's as complete as you'll probably ever find it. Bear with it as the first and last few minutes have no known surviving film.
If you're going to give me an upvote, please do so for the original video uploaders as well as I wouldn't have been able to do this without their efforts. - Розваги
Awesome. What a great sound this band had. Funny as f**k as well. 😂
Excellent vid and audio - well done.
I remember this night well. I came from Godalming, knew John AKA JJ (then known as Harley John) before The Stranglers were a band. We had followed them since they started out.
I think we were one of the very few in the uni sports hall from Guildford area that night, all the rest being uni students. The Stranglers wanted the tickets to be given out to local fans before being offered to the uni students, hence walking off stage. I spoke to John backstage who was put out about the BBC not distributing the tickets as they had promised.
Glad to see that school JJ and I went to (RGS Guildford) now recognise him as an illustrious former pupil.
I remember waiting for this to come on TV on BBC 2, now I know why it was never aired.
Thanks for putting it on UA-cam👍
Same thing man . I remember it well
Dave's performance here is simply superb 🎹 👏👏👏.
Thx for sharing this
I agree. Stunnng
In 1978 we broke the doorframe at my mates house, listening to this song
Excellent thank you very much. ☆**
I am Japanese.
どういたしまして。 私は彼らが始まった町に住んでいて、彼らの最初のショーは私の隣の通りでした。
Imagine writing and recording a song like 'Bring On The Nubiles' these days 😂
The outcry would be huge
Ah, this is brilliant. To find this complete version of Ugly, from this era.. and on a Wednesday evening 😂 Superb! Thanks for uploading.
Amazing audio and work by you all 🍀🇬🇧👍🏼
Brilliant job saw them in Battersea park amazing
Was that the Rock Against Racism gig? I think that was filmed. The one with the strippers during NICE & SLEAZY?
@@GuildfordGhost yes it was but as I recall it wasn’t a RAR gig it was a benefit for women’s shelters , and I think Peter Gabriel was also on it but I’m not entirely sure just checked yes he was on that gig it was only round the corner from where i lived long before Battersea got posh .
Love the way you pieced the video footage together but crucially adding the stereo mix. Brilliant job. Incidentally the Ugly clip at the beginning was originally uploaded by me.
Thanks, Gerard. Especially for being OK about incorporating something you uploaded. Gotta say, I AM pleased with the results. It took a lot of work and fine tuning because an audio tape from the mixer isn't going to run in perfect real time like the video. Lots of tiny tweaks were required.
I'm certainly ok with you using my clip. I certainly don't own it, so I can't complain.
Pity though. They sounded amazing 🤩
Hahaha Crackerjack pencils!!
And Hanging Around isn't off Black and White ffs.
Great footage though.
Such a brilliant band from a brilliant era for live music.
Thank you so much this is absolutely brilliant
Other people's material. I just collected, synced and boosted it.
This is fxxcking brilliant.
Yeah, apart from the fact they only played for 20 minutes, the f3kkin lazy bar stewards.
Hugh’s hilarious 😂
Thanks for posting this
Thanks for this. The description of what you did is totally over my head, but it's good work.
I'm just a UA-cam version of The Repair Shop. ;)
Sounds as good as (if not better than) Live X-Cert. Top repairing!
I have better recordings from the roundhouse 1977 that ended up on X-Cert's never understood why they did not use them. Battersea and this were better
I love how they don't enjoy playing for the audience, shittalk them between the songs but still sound great when they play
They seemed to play some of their most offensive songs and I guess the anger just made them sound better. It would have been interesting if they had deliberately played really badly but I guess the audience at home may have thought they weren't very good.
I just see them hanging around.
magnifique vestige!
This is brilliant..........
Amazing. I'm in the crowd somewhere.
Wow! Come on, then. Honest answer! Uni or local? I think the way the band treated the students was out of order as it wasn't their fault the organisers reneged on their promise to make sure half the tickets went to Guildfordians.
@@GuildfordGhost punks being punks. FYI- I wasn't a student.
Awesome!
Great stuff!
Why was Hugh's crackerjack pencil video section removed? I would just have kept the original hanging around footage. Remember going to the BFI to watch the original broadcast years ago. Cost the band a few appearances on the whistle test the action that night.
Love band
Great effort thnx…
I remember sitting in my mums house thinking the Stranglers supposed to be coming on. They played a live show of John martyn instead
Legendary and so in yer face !
Footage begins at 3:02 ...
Not the song though.
Fantastic! I hitched to London from Cambridge to see Patti Smith at the Roundhouse in Chalk Farm but my more knowledgeable girlfriend pointed out she was a joke whereas support band The Stranglers had something. They sang harmonies! Hugh was wearing a fuck-off t-shirt. Such amusing hostility. We went to see them at the Greyhound the next weekend on Fulham Broadway, free gig, I loved Dave's Beefhearty vocals and weird chords. I'll be playing 11m from this on my Soho Radio show tomorrow morning if that's okay, I start at 8am. Do you know Bad Sam and Disease? Punks not dead just smells funny.
Brilliant! It's not my copyright, so do as you wish!
Ahhhh, the boys committing commercial suicide. Legends.
ヒューコーンウェルの大大大ファンです!
いいですね!私も、彼らの素晴らしいショーを見たいです!ストラングラーズの大ファン、ヒューおーんウェルの大大大大ファンです!
This is the shit.
Bring on the nubiles and more
Great. 🇬🇧 ✌️
Definitely spotted Jon Foxx in the audience. About 23.50
yes I thought so too. The camera zooms in
I thought it was too, but at 5:50.
I've still got my Crackerjack Pencil.
@JoanneTelling1 Is it up your arse?
Merry Christmas
Thanks.
a piece of Strangler history I didn't know about. I think they were right to do a few songs for whatever real fans they had in the hall who wouldn't care about the swearing then walk out regarding ticket sales. The punk thing to do as punk was about them and us wasn't it?
Dam fast though, wish I had gone seen them rather than just buy the LPs.
25:20 "I am sorry about this as it came as a bit of surprise to us as well as to you. Next time we will bring a professional band". That reminds me of Matthew 7:6 "do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces."
Are there any universities left who even put gigs on anymore ? Coventry and Warwick are just huge cash machines who aren't interested in anything else let alone doing owt for the local community.
Cardiff
Sweet . Maybe they should have a word with our wankers .
Tightest band in the world by this point and a sound like no other. Wasted on most of this audience I think.
werent it on bbc two im sure it was on them rock goes to college progs .
Yes.
The Stranglers wers banned by the BBC after this. Typical of them to blame the band rather than take the blame themselves for just lying through their teeth. The BBC didn't need much of an excuse to ban them, not playing the 'Duchess' video because the band dressed as choirboys and it was deemed as blasphemous and yet Dave Allen was allowed to make sketches depicting all sorts of religious misdemeanours.
That's true but I THINK it was Surrey University who didn't do the business with the tickets being on sale to locals rather than the BBC. Happy to be corrected. I do wonder about the DUCHESS video. The BBC won't show it but clearly the Church of England gave permission to film it in a church. It wasn't even sacreligious!
Student w⚓s getting upity 😂😂😂
Is Jean Jacques banana being Gibby lol
Of course it's an elitist audience. Well almost. 😄 Why agree to play there at all if it offends one's communist sensibilities? I hope they weren't paid in advance, and not at all as it turned out. I'd have sued them for breach of contract. I assume Hugh doesn't regard himself as elitist with his 3rd from Bristol and his flunked Swedish PhD.
It wasn't about the University audience. It was about the fact they had contractually arranged to sell tickets to local people as well. The SU reneged on that contract and only sold tickets to students. As the band come from Guildford, this was particularly offensive.
@@GuildfordGhost If you agree to play at a Convent, expect an audience of nuns. If you agree to play at university, expect an audience of students. If they felt so strongly about it, the Stranglers shave have done the ticketing. They could have done another show at Guildford Town Hall or Guildford Public Library or whatever and ensured that tickets were only sold to revolutionary communist manual factory workers wearing greasy overalls and earning below a certain maximum wage and not wearing glasses (Pol Pot said this is a sign if bourgeoisie intelligentsia). Also, can you imagine these guys singing "I Feel Like a W0g" today? Not very PC.
@@JupiterThunder A great deal of their songs from that time are pretty vile, in spite of the intention often being the opposite of the lyrics. What's that got to do with this issue, though? Yes, I agree they could have done other gigs but they played this one on an understanding, and that assurance wasn't met - so they walked. Some punk acts wouldn't have played at all.
@@GuildfordGhostSpot on! I'm a huge Stranglers fan but I never knew about.this gig and I don't blame them it was the late 70s absolutely hilarious. People have a habit of misinterpreting stranglers songs as something they are not I'm glad they didn't give into political correctness and played :I feel like a wog' in more recent times as it's as meaningful now as it was then. Jet wrote about the meaning of that song on the band's website it's still up for anyone interested. Awesome band who finally got the credit they deserved in more recent times. 😊
WoW " you're just a bunch of wankers" - not inc in the previous footage, for once I agree with a bunch of students.Stranglers just come across as spoiled, stroppy brats walking off in a huff, only reason they mentioned the local council estates was to make themselves look 'cool'.
I get that. I mean, JJ went to The Royal Grammar School here; it's a posh private boys' school with an excellent reputation. I don't know if the rest of the band were even local people for any lengthy period of time. I know Jet ran an off licence called JACKPOT near the station (long demolished now). The story behind this gig is that half the tickets were meant to go to local people, but that didn't happen. It wasn't the students' fault. Sounds like Hugh was just well aware of Park Barn and Bellfields without having any actual link to them. Point scoring to a degree by aligning himself. Nevertheless, I think the band were right to point out that a deal hadn't been honoured.
Screw the presumably posh audience. Stick it up them.
@@GuildfordGhost Not necessarily a lengthy period, but they were living locally weren't they?
@@80ssynthfan48 I know they used to live in a squat in Chiddingfold, some miles south of Guildford. It's a big privately owned house now. I went there once as I was working for the person who lived there.
All Students deserve this treatment
Boorish. No need
@kevinhisee4265 You're not very punk/rock 'n' roll.
