Its called a detent wheel , i had the same thing happen but i also lost the spring as well , i upgraded it to a 2001 detent wheel and it shifts way better , but let me tell ya i was very happy to find out my tranny was still mint , took more time waiting for my part to come in then it took to fix ... by the way thanks for this video it helped me fix my bike insted of paying a mechanic, not like i would let anyone touch my bike anyway , i do all my work my self . Got my sporty in 97 and still ride it now its only a 96 883 but she moves and never lets me down ....keep up the goid work ....
First time I did this job, I didn't get the shifter shaft held in quite the right spot when setting the adjustment; had to take the primary cover back off and fiddle with it. Later, I found a cheap primary cover, I cut off a piece off the top side of it that locates the shift shaft & allows me to make the adjustment with that shaft held in the right place. Made the adjustment super easy on the next trans I did. Throwing this out there for my fellow "home gamers" who don't work on this stuff every day, and can benefit from the "third hand fixture" stuff that guys who do this every day might not use.
Mucho respect to you Tatro , for learning those younsters what’s all about mechanics , and sorry about the fuck-up on the trapdoor . I haven‘t been working on a Sporty for a Long time .!!
This guys is a great guy to learn from I so wish I was them kids u can tell he’s a a hole especially if he was havin. Bad day but yes deff the guy u shut up and just pay attention to because he’s got knowledge 👌👌👌
Hey boss any info on the gears I’d like to see a video n how the trans works and what gear it’s in while shifting through them trying to see why my 4th gear won’t inflate and where to look for
what if you don't have a manual and you have to think and figure things out on your own? that is what the videos try to teach. just about anyone can copy someone else but that does not mean it is correct. at some point you need to pull out that tool called your brain and go it on your own. as you can see i rarely use manuals and most instructions suck at best. there is always more than one way to do a job. as long as it works, that is all that matters. tatro
Tatro Machine easy Tatro, wasn't trying to outdo ya. Not many of us do have manuals, and yes you do a good job on teaching in the videos, hence their reason for you making them.
i have thick skin. just explaining how i do things. i have alot of manuals but i do not have everyone from 1930 to current for every harley made. i don't go the the manuals unless i have too and most of the time i just use command since. tatro
Tatro Machine You and me both. Manuals are nice to have but we both know there's other way to do things. Nice job on the work inside the primary. I delete the spring plates all the time. And I imagine you eliminate them on the twincam junk like I do too. I got a care package headed your way.
Tatro hi, is it normal that cluch basket on sporter is a bit moving xross the shaft vector not paralel. very small moovement sideway maybe 0,05 inch. Or it has to be solid rock stable?
One month after watching this, guess what? The 2002 XLH 1200 Sportster I own broke its retainer clip for the detent wheel and now barely shifts. I found part of it stuck to the drain plug. Talk about jinxed. At least I know how to fix it, parts are on order.
ok, going back to the old IRON-HEAD. you know the good bikes. When replacing the RACE BEARING and mainshaft, will you need to Line bore the race bearing in order to fit the new roller bearings, mainshaft in place or can you just install new race, roller bearings and mainshaft with out any adjustment ? Im rebuilding my transmission in my 82 ironhead.. and i have to repalce the race bearing and main shaft along with thrust washers, bearing and spacers .. the gears all look good as well as some of the thrust washers ..
all bearing races and bushings have to be fitted before you can assemble the other parts. only bearing assemblies like timken, torrington and ball can be assembled without fitting. tatro
I have an 2002 Sportster as well,,, The exact thing happened to My Bike,,, what a Shitty retaining clip,,, Thanks for this Video Tatro, now I think I can do this Myself if it happens again...!!!!!
Tatro , you must be my brother the way you talk to your helpers ...Great Video , except for the ' prospects' and their camera holding ... Ride on bro .....I went to the Hardley - Able - son shop and they gave their typical bull shit replies , " oh we never heard of shift pawl shaft circlip and or spring failures "
I just did the primary gasket on my Evo XL. I wish i saw this vidio first, i would've inspected that clip more closely! So....where's everybody's front fender in California? I do like the belt buckle batt hold down, I might copy that.
I got more like a question that a comment I got a 1976 Harley Davies sportster 1000 I have a problem with my 3rd gear I wanna know what size retaining rings ago in the front in the back of 3rd year if you could help me with that that would be awesome thank you.
I’m fixing to go into my 04 Sportster 1200 because it won’t shift into third and fourth although it does hit third or fourth sometimes so I’m going to try to find the problem and was just reaching out to see if anyone had any ideas about why it’s not shifting into third and fourth any input would be helpful
looking for a video on how the gears and dogs actually work to change each. plus a explanation of which gear is which... cool video.. oh, "eye patches" are the shit... 😀
@@TatroMachine ignorant comment.. do you not think I haven't done research or own manuals??? Get a friggin grip!.. poor response to a legitimate question.
it maybe a stupid response to you but that is how i learn. a good parts book is your best friend. it shows pictures of what the parts are, part numbers to find the parts, descriptions that tell you what the parts are and year model fitments. no one told me how this crap works, i figured it out myself. stop being a dumbass and get to it. tatro

Great , loved this garage , made me feel right at home . ( stupid customers 👍😄 )
We found two of the dowel pins were coming out making detent plate crooked! Remove them, nerold them, red lock tighten them in !
I'm wondering if that air compressor tank is the Start to a wood burning heater/stove ...
Nice custom engraving on the shift detent. You use a drill or something to set the linkage centered. The manual had some procedure on it.
