Hey man, I really liked your video, and I'm considering joining the bowling team at my school and I have two questions for you. What would you guess i would have to score at minimum to make the team? Also how can I decrease my anxiety so I dont screw up?
Its disappointing to see you throwing the ball with no thumb. And then you also to get curve you come over top of the ball. As a bowler for 20+ years you need to stay behind the ball so you are more accurate.
@CIA 1114 I would recommend putting your fingers in and rolling the ball onto your thumb and try not to squeeze. You want a relaxed but firm feel. I use the finger and thumb with my bowling balls, for your information.
I'll be honest, I'm here because I want to be ready for the next time I get invited by friends to casually bowl. I want to absolutely dumpster my friends. They will just be chucking balls at pins and shrugging as they walk of shame back to the seats, but not me. I hope to turn around early and say to my friends "I don't even need to look. @@VivaFrei I found the answer as to what network bowling airs on: in America, The PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) used to air on ESPN (TSN in Canada), but since I think 2018, the PBA airs on FOX and FS1. I don't know what networks are in Canada. But that's is the only information I found thanks to watching the PBA.

Yep, this guy definitely gives me the "late nite TV guru" vibes too.
This guy is so raw, he clearly is in command of his craft but not hesitating to include the shots that didn't go as planned. I have so much respect for those kinds of people on UA-cam, it's so easy to just cut out all the imperfections. Kudos for genuineness. I'd also say, more could have been explained for the viewer who's a total beginner in bowling. I can totally see someone being like, what the frick are oil patterns and so on. The vid was technical and fast paced. I really enjoyed it though, keep up the good work
If I have to be honest this video is not very technical at all. This game is very complex and take so much more than just one short video to fully explain how to play this game at a competitive level. He has a few good tips and I found this video to be a good beginner level video for bowlers, just not an advanced video in any way.

Honestly I've been bowling for 6 years now and if you don't have your own bowling balls (aka you're bowling with balls that the alley gives you), you're gonna have a really difficult time. Usually "house balls" as they're called are made of plastic or urethane, which are like the latex ball he describes - they don't really want to hook a whole lot. My suggestion would be a) grab a slightly lighter ball, b) SIGNIFICANTLY reduce your ball speed (I'm talking slower than is probably comfortable), and c) practice the wrist-over-hand thing he talks about in here. Whether you're a one handed or two handed bowler, the rotation he talks about comes from getting your hand UNDERNEATH the ball, and rotating it from that position. Generally, though, search around for some used balls (ebay, craigslist, etc) - they don't have to fit perfectly if you're just learning.
I usually bowl a 190-200 average with a high game of 278. My highest game with a houseball is 208 and I average around 150-170. It makes a huge difference and makes bowling much more fun(you can do a lot more things).
Just go and have fun. If you just want to be a little better than your friends work on throwing the ball over a target such as an arrow on the lane. This will make you more consistently accurate. The next thing would be throw straight at your spares using an arrow as an aiming point to line up for the spare.
This is quality content right here. All tutorials should be like this, simple and to the point no rubbish or fluf. I'd pay top dollar for this video. Thank you!
I used to be a bowler too. I was a straight shooter with house balls. I bowled for years and they finally convinced me and my buddies to join a league. We bowled for one season and hammered everyone. That pretty much is the story of my bowling career. I pretty much stopped after that. GREAT vid btw and KEEP IT COMING!

I enjoy bowling, yet I've never used spin or rotation. I just kinda straightball with some decent momentum into the 1-3 pocket and crush the pins into submission. I was a controlled arm pitcher in baseball for seven years, though, which helps. Either way, I enjoy the personality aspect of it. Nice video.
Trainer Blue the Champion Thank you :-) there is a scientific reason why hooking it into the 1-3 pocket is better… when you shoot with a curve into the pocket, the ball continues to drive forward into the upper left side of the pins, taking down more pins. A straight ball at the 1-3 pocket deflects to the right and does not continue to drive its way into the pins with similar force...
@@VivaFrei some of it is just precision. The optimal angle to hit the pocket is, IIRC 6 degrees (or rather, 354 degrees, because it's in the opposite direction), with or without a curve, hitting the head pin first, and a straight ball can do that pretty easily. The problem is you can't hit the same spot over and over again, curve or no curve. If you miss with a straight ball though, you won't get your strike, because you simply won't hit the pocket. With a curve ball, you can throw some pretty terrible shots, and it will still rotate towards the pocket because of how the oil patterns are laid out, at least for a house shot. That's another reason speed helps you make strikes. A lot of people bowl with a lot of speed and a very aggressive curve, giving them a much higher angle of entry than what's technically optimal, very often even hitting the 3 pin moreso than the head pin (this guy here even does that). If you wanted to do that was "scientifically correct", you would slow down, use a lot fewer revs, and throw closer to the middle, because 6 degrees is actually pretty small (it's basically one second on a clock). At that point you don't need a really heavy ball or a really fast throw (or even very many revs, if any at all). But again you have to be extremely precise and hit the the same spot with the the right angle every single time. If you throw your ball faster, and use a heavier ball though, you can be off quite a bit and still manage to get lucky most of the time. Obviously people are only so consistent, so that's where you have to start distinguishing by what "scientifically correct" means, because sure, having a curve helps in the real world for human beings. A machine precise enough to hit strikes though might not need one.

Scoring is as follows when you strike it is 10 pins plus the next two balls you throw. When you spare it is 10 pins plus the next ball you throw. Lastly an open frame is just that score.
Think the best tip for me personally might be the one at 2:30. I still have a really weak grip strength after snapping my arms in half a while ago and I'm not sure it's physically possible for me to get it back at this point, so being able to use more of my arm to spin the ball rather than my hand and wrist might be worth trying, as well as avoiding my wrist giving up halfway through the first game.
Never been able to spin, but would love to learn. Bowling is one of my favorite things to do. We use to have an alley in my town with $2 Tuesdays, $2 shoes and $2 games. I'd play 5, 6, sometimes 7 games by myself every week. I've perfected the straight line drive 20mph 1-3 hit pretty good. Last time out, I bowled a 220 which was my all time best game. 5 years after the old bowling alley got torn down they finally opened a new bowling alley in my town. Maybe one day I'll learn to spin at the expense of my pride of a high score.

Wow I didn't even know professionals curve their shots. I thought the "standard" way was to just throw it straight, lol Can you do a video on body motion and technique for throwing it straight? I play casually with friends, family and girlfriend alike and I want to be able to aim for the middle pin reliably. I have gotten those splits in the past but since I'm not competing in any tournaments, I'm not too bothered. A split here and there out of many strikes wouldn't bother me :P One thing that would really help is the "foot work"? Because I have no idea how that works. I always end up throwing it with just one step to avoid confusing myself. Cheers!
With due respect, the last spare could be done with a straight throw to the center of mass of the remaining pins. This works for me. I have spinal arthritis and cannot produce curved throws. I have fun doing spares instead of strikes. A 200 point all spare game can win an amateur tournament. Thanks for your video.
Starting the game off with a non-strike hurts because a strike can potentially get you 20 extra points. With a spare you can only get up to 10 extra points. It's not like he said it was a terrible start. And of course, he's filming a bowling tutorial and very good bowlers get strikes more often than not.
Really happy to see another bowler using two fingers instead of three. I self-taught using two fingers because using my thumb just never felt right. Eventually I was able to work my game up into the 200s. Still looking for that elusive perfect game though!

With the caveat that I'm pretty new to bowling, I raised my average by 40 pins per game since first watching this video about 6 weeks ago and trying to imitate your bowling style. Best of all - It's a fun way to hurl the ball down the alley. Thanks!
For anybody who has a latex allergy, do not worry... rubber bowling balls haven't been a thing for a while now (although there are a few still in circulation). The clear coverstock ball he has is polyester, not latex. And generally speaking you have 3 types of bowling balls. Polyester, Urethane and Reactive Resin. Reactive Resin is actually Urethane with additives in them the have them soak up the oil a bit. Within Reactive resin you have 3 main categories - Solid (that typically have additives to increase the pores to soak up the oil), Pearlized that have microscopic crystals in them to give better friction on less oily conditions, and particle, which have small particles that help with friction in oily lanes. There are also hybrid coverstocks that take properties of pearlized and particle. The house balls that bowling alleys provide are either polyester or urethane (there is no latex).
Something that this video missed. The core of the bowling ball. Proper balls that you would buy (like he has) have cores that ALLOW the ball to spin. The ones you use at the bowling alley don't have cores that allow for lots of spin, putting you at a HUGE disadvantage if you are actually trying to learn.

I agree with most of this video. One part you have wrong is turning your hand to impart the hook. You want the palm of you hand to face the ceiling and not rotate your hand or wrist. The hook comes from the angle of end over end rotation. Think of it like a car tire. When you put 45 degrees of turn on the tire while the tire is end over end rotating you turn. Now imagine you hit a patch of ice that is 35-40 feet long. When you turn 45 degrees to the left you skid in the same direction of travel and do not turn. However, when you hit the dry patch at the end your skid you get traction and turn left. This end over end rotation will increase your power at the pins. This is because the ball is rolling head on to the 1-3 pocket. So tuck in your pinky so it touches your ring finger, spread out your pointer finger as far as you feel comfortable from your middle finger. Then use your pointer finger to aim at the arrow you want the ball to roll over. This is easier to repeat over and over as you make no movement in the wrist.
two comments....1. throwing a straight ball is easier for picking up those spares. Makes it less about hook/curve and more about the angle. So for the 10 pin you line up on the far left side of the lane and shoot diagonally across the lane...a good way to practice that is with a full rack...see if you can pick off just the 7 or 10 pin. 2. to attack that 6-9 you want to slow the ball down, hit the right side of the 6 and let the ball ricochet out to the 9....but for wider splits, yeah, try to slide the pin...which is easier with a straight ball.

@JP Smith, definitely. I would never start by teaching a no thumb to a beginner. Very few people can bowl no thumb truly effectively, and it’s definitely not the best way to bowl. Bowling no thumb is not dangerous if you know how to do it, but I do worry that people will try to copy him.
1WayUp I’ve bowled a lot, and I average 190-200 atm. Bowling no thumb works for some people(I can bowl around a 150-160 with it), but it is much harder to control(at least for me). Everyone has their own style of bowling, it’s part of what makes it a good sport.
My dad used to be in a league at a pretty big alley in our area. He used to take me and my 3 brothers to the lanes everytime there was a competition and it was always amazing to see how skillful he was after he and his friends shared pitchers of beer lol

I love that you know all these cool tidbits about bowling and have great advice on it but you don't know the scoring lol. Some of the best times I have had in life was when a group of friends and I were in a bowling league. Our team was called "The Don Knotts-so Good Bowlers"

Something that’s also very important in how to control your ball and your throw is your approach, or your walk-up. Make sure your feet are steady and focus on where your shoulders and hips are pointing - this will help with your aim.

Viva Frei I think you can work on your step.. or step speed so that you have more momentum and also your release.Although thumbless does require more of your arm, right now it looks like you’re using your arm too much. Just my opinion ✌️oh and I personally like Tom Smallwood as a thumbless bowler and Jason Belmonte for two handed.

You bowl just like me and learned just like me. I am pretty much self taught and I don't use the thumb hole ever. Youre way better than me!!! That split you gotta come at it from the right aim for the right side of the left pin and try to get it to come in at a curving angle \... Glass it off the right one and knick the left one... Viva, there are a lot more than just resin and latex balls. You need to put urethane into the picture and stop acting like it never existed.

Trainer Blue the Champion Thank you :-) there is a scientific reason why hooking it into the 1-3 pocket is better… when you shoot with a curve into the pocket, the ball continues to drive forward into the upper left side of the pins, taking down more pins. A straight ball at the 1-3 pocket deflects to the right and does not continue to drive its way into the pins with similar force...
@@VivaFrei some of it is just precision. The optimal angle to hit the pocket is, IIRC 6 degrees (or rather, 354 degrees, because it's in the opposite direction), with or without a curve, hitting the head pin first, and a straight ball can do that pretty easily. The problem is you can't hit the same spot over and over again, curve or no curve. If you miss with a straight ball though, you won't get your strike, because you simply won't hit the pocket. With a curve ball, you can throw some pretty terrible shots, and it will still rotate towards the pocket because of how the oil patterns are laid out, at least for a house shot.
That's another reason speed helps you make strikes. A lot of people bowl with a lot of speed and a very aggressive curve, giving them a much higher angle of entry than what's technically optimal, very often even hitting the 3 pin moreso than the head pin (this guy here even does that). If you wanted to do that was "scientifically correct", you would slow down, use a lot fewer revs, and throw closer to the middle, because 6 degrees is actually pretty small (it's basically one second on a clock).
At that point you don't need a really heavy ball or a really fast throw (or even very many revs, if any at all).
But again you have to be extremely precise and hit the the same spot with the the right angle every single time. If you throw your ball faster, and use a heavier ball though, you can be off quite a bit and still manage to get lucky most of the time.
Obviously people are only so consistent, so that's where you have to start distinguishing by what "scientifically correct" means, because sure, having a curve helps in the real world for human beings. A machine precise enough to hit strikes though might not need one.
@@surin925 actually 3 - 6 degrees produce strikes and to throw a straight ball at 3 degrees would require standing in the next lane.

Scoring is as follows when you strike it is 10 pins plus the next two balls you throw. When you spare it is 10 pins plus the next ball you throw. Lastly an open frame is just that score.

Think the best tip for me personally might be the one at 2:30. I still have a really weak grip strength after snapping my arms in half a while ago and I'm not sure it's physically possible for me to get it back at this point, so being able to use more of my arm to spin the ball rather than my hand and wrist might be worth trying, as well as avoiding my wrist giving up halfway through the first game.
Never been able to spin, but would love to learn. Bowling is one of my favorite things to do. We use to have an alley in my town with $2 Tuesdays, $2 shoes and $2 games. I'd play 5, 6, sometimes 7 games by myself every week. I've perfected the straight line drive 20mph 1-3 hit pretty good. Last time out, I bowled a 220 which was my all time best game. 5 years after the old bowling alley got torn down they finally opened a new bowling alley in my town. Maybe one day I'll learn to spin at the expense of my pride of a high score.
Ok. This is amazing. I am a huge fan. Only maybe been following for a year or so but never miss. Now I learn that you're a bowler and are good. I love bowling too. Always wanted to be good at it. Legendary.

I play casually with friends, family and girlfriend alike and I want to be able to aim for the middle pin reliably.
I have gotten those splits in the past but since I'm not competing in any tournaments, I'm not too bothered. A split here and there out of many strikes wouldn't bother me :P
One thing that would really help is the "foot work"? Because I have no idea how that works. I always end up throwing it with just one step to avoid confusing myself.

With due respect, the last spare could be done with a straight throw to the center of mass of the remaining pins. This works for me. I have spinal arthritis and cannot produce curved throws. I have fun doing spares instead of strikes. A 200 point all spare game can win an amateur tournament. Thanks for your video.

Starting the game off with a non-strike hurts because a strike can potentially get you 20 extra points. With a spare you can only get up to 10 extra points. It's not like he said it was a terrible start. And of course, he's filming a bowling tutorial and very good bowlers get strikes more often than not.

Really happy to see another bowler using two fingers instead of three. I self-taught using two fingers because using my thumb just never felt right. Eventually I was able to work my game up into the 200s. Still looking for that elusive perfect game though!

For anybody who has a latex allergy, do not worry... rubber bowling balls haven't been a thing for a while now (although there are a few still in circulation). The clear coverstock ball he has is polyester, not latex. And generally speaking you have 3 types of bowling balls. Polyester, Urethane and Reactive Resin. Reactive Resin is actually Urethane with additives in them the have them soak up the oil a bit. Within Reactive resin you have 3 main categories - Solid (that typically have additives to increase the pores to soak up the oil), Pearlized that have microscopic crystals in them to give better friction on less oily conditions, and particle, which have small particles that help with friction in oily lanes. There are also hybrid coverstocks that take properties of pearlized and particle.
The house balls that bowling alleys provide are either polyester or urethane (there is no latex).
Something that this video missed. The core of the bowling ball. Proper balls that you would buy (like he has) have cores that ALLOW the ball to spin. The ones you use at the bowling alley don't have cores that allow for lots of spin, putting you at a HUGE disadvantage if you are actually trying to learn.

I agree with most of this video. One part you have wrong is turning your hand to impart the hook. You want the palm of you hand to face the ceiling and not rotate your hand or wrist. The hook comes from the angle of end over end rotation. Think of it like a car tire. When you put 45 degrees of turn on the tire while the tire is end over end rotating you turn. Now imagine you hit a patch of ice that is 35-40 feet long. When you turn 45 degrees to the left you skid in the same direction of travel and do not turn. However, when you hit the dry patch at the end your skid you get traction and turn left. This end over end rotation will increase your power at the pins. This is because the ball is rolling head on to the 1-3 pocket. So tuck in your pinky so it touches your ring finger, spread out your pointer finger as far as you feel comfortable from your middle finger. Then use your pointer finger to aim at the arrow you want the ball to roll over. This is easier to repeat over and over as you make no movement in the wrist.
two comments....1. throwing a straight ball is easier for picking up those spares. Makes it less about hook/curve and more about the angle. So for the 10 pin you line up on the far left side of the lane and shoot diagonally across the lane...a good way to practice that is with a full rack...see if you can pick off just the 7 or 10 pin.
2. to attack that 6-9 you want to slow the ball down, hit the right side of the 6 and let the ball ricochet out to the 9....but for wider splits, yeah, try to slide the pin...which is easier with a straight ball.

It’s very homebrew, and his knowledge is a bit iffy(spin on a ball instead of hook). But he knows more than a total beginner.

@JP Smith, definitely. I would never start by teaching a no thumb to a beginner. Very few people can bowl no thumb truly effectively, and it’s definitely not the best way to bowl. Bowling no thumb is not dangerous if you know how to do it, but I do worry that people will try to copy him.
1WayUp I’ve bowled a lot, and I average 190-200 atm. Bowling no thumb works for some people(I can bowl around a 150-160 with it), but it is much harder to control(at least for me). Everyone has their own style of bowling, it’s part of what makes it a good sport.
My dad used to be in a league at a pretty big alley in our area. He used to take me and my 3 brothers to the lanes everytime there was a competition and it was always amazing to see how skillful he was after he and his friends shared pitchers of beer lol

I love that you know all these cool tidbits about bowling and have great advice on it but you don't know the scoring lol. Some of the best times I have had in life was when a group of friends and I were in a bowling league. Our team was called "The Don Knotts-so Good Bowlers"

Something that’s also very important in how to control your ball and your throw is your approach, or your walk-up. Make sure your feet are steady and focus on where your shoulders and hips are pointing - this will help with your aim.

Viva Frei I think you can work on your step.. or step speed so that you have more momentum and also your release.Although thumbless does require more of your arm, right now it looks like you’re using your arm too much. Just my opinion ✌️oh and I personally like Tom Smallwood as a thumbless bowler and Jason Belmonte for two handed.

You bowl just like me and learned just like me. I am pretty much self taught and I don't use the thumb hole ever. Youre way better than me!!! That split you gotta come at it from the right aim for the right side of the left pin and try to get it to come in at a curving angle \... Glass it off the right one and knick the left one...
